²⁰ Then He began to censure the cities in which His many, many wonder-works had been done, because they did not repent. ²¹ "A curse on you, Chorazin! A curse on you, Bethsaida! For if the wonder-works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, long ago they would have repented in sackcloth and ashes.

³ But He said to them, "Did you never read what David did, when he and his soldiers became hungry?

⁵ Or, did you never read in the law that the priests in the temple break the sabbath, and yet are not guilty?

⁷ If you only knew what that saying means, 'It is mercy and not sacrifice that I want,' you would not have condemned men who are not guilty.

⁴ And He answered, "Have you not read that the Creator at the beginning made them male and female,

²⁸ "But what do you think? There was a man who had two sons, He came to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in my vineyard today.' ²⁹ And he answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go. ³⁰ Then he came to the second and said the same thing. And he answered, 'I will not.' But afterward he changed his mind and went. ³¹ Which of the two did what his father wanted?" They answered, "The second one." Jesus said to them, "I solemnly say to you, the tax-collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of heaven ahead of you. ³² For John came to you walking in the way of uprightness, and yet you did not believe him. The tax-collectors and prostitutes did believe him, but you, even though you saw that, would not change your minds afterward and believe him.

⁴² Then Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures: 'That stone which the builders threw away has become the cornerstone; this is the work of the Lord and seems wonderful to us!'

³¹ But did you never read, on the resurrection of the dead, what God said to you, ³² 'I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob!' Now God is not the God of dead but of living men."

¹⁷ Jesus heard it, and said to them, "Not well but sick people have to send for the doctor. It is not upright but sinful people that I have come to invite."

²⁶ But as to the rising of the dead, did you never read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?

³² It is not upright but sinful people that I have come to invite to repentance."

²⁶ And He answered him, "What is written in the law? How does it read?"

³ So He told them the following story: ⁴ "What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep, and if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and continue to look for the lost one until he finds it? ⁵ And when he finds it, with joy he puts it on his shoulders, ⁶ and when he reaches home he calls in his friends and neighbors, and says to them, 'Rejoice with me, because I have found my lost sheep!' ⁷ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinful person who repents than over ninety-nine upright people who do not need any repentance. ⁸ "Or what woman, if she has ten silver coins and loses one of them, does not light a lamp and sweep the house, and look carefully until she finds it? ⁹ And when she finds it, she calls in her friends and neighbors, and says, 'Rejoice with me, because I have found the coin which I lost!' ¹⁰ Just so, I tell you, there is joy among the angels of God over one sinful person who repents!"

⁴⁷ and that in His name repentance as the condition for the forgiveness of sins should be preached to all the nations. Beginning at Jerusalem

³⁴ Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, "You are gods"'?

³⁸ Peter said to them, "You must repent -- and, as an expression of it, let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ -- that you may have your sins forgiven; and then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit,

¹⁹ So now repent and turn to Him, to have your sins wiped out, that times of revival may come from the presence of the Lord,

³¹ God has exalted to His right hand this very One as our Leader and Saviour, in order to give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.

¹⁸ When they heard this, they had no answer to make, but gave God the glory, saying, "So God has given even the heathen the repentance that leads to life."

³⁰ Though God overlooked those times of ignorance, He now commands all men everywhere to repent, ³¹ since He has set a day on which He will justly judge the world through a man whom He has appointed. He has made this credible to all by raising Him from the dead."

²¹ but constantly and earnestly I urged Greeks as well as Jews to turn with repentance to God and to have faith in our Lord Jesus.

¹⁸ to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light and from Satan's power to God, so as to have their sins forgiven and have a possession among those that are consecrated by faith in me.' ¹⁹ Therefore, King Agrippa, I could not disobey that heavenly vision, ²⁰ but I began to preach first to the people of Damascus and Jerusalem, and all over Judea, and then to the heathen, to repent and turn to God, and to live lives consistent with such repentance.

⁴ Do you think so little of the riches of God's kindness, forbearance, and patience, not conscious that His kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? ⁵ But in your stubbornness and impenitence of heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath, when the justice of God's judgments will be uncovered. ⁶ For when He finally judges, He will pay everyone with exactness for what he has done,

¹⁰ as the Scriptures say: "Not a single human creature is upright, ¹¹ No one understands, no one is searching for God; ¹² They all have turned aside, all have become corrupt; No one does good, not even one! ¹³ Their throats are just like open graves, with their tongues they have spoken treachery; the poison of asps is under their lips. ¹⁴ Their mouths are full of bitter cursing. ¹⁵ Their feet are swift for shedding blood, ¹⁶ Ruin and wretchedness are on their paths, ¹⁷ They do not know the way of peace. ¹⁸ There is no reverence for God before their eyes." ¹⁹ Now we know that everything the law says is spoken to those who are under its authority, that every mouth may be stopped and the whole world be held responsible to God. ²⁰ Because no human creature can be brought into right standing with God by observing the law. For all the law can do is to make men conscious of sin. ²¹ But now God's way of giving men right standing with Himself has come to light; a way without connection with the law, and yet a way to which the law and the prophets testify. ²² God's own way of giving men right standing with Himself is through faith in Jesus Christ. It is for everybody who has faith, for no distinction at all is made. ²³ For everybody has sinned and everybody continues to come short of God's glory, ²⁴ but anybody may have right standing with God as a free gift of His undeserved favor, through the ransom provided in Christ Jesus.

⁹ Do you not know that wrongdoers will not have a share in the kingdom of God? Stop being misled; people who are sexually immoral or idolaters or adulterers or sensual or guilty of unnatural sexual vice ¹⁰ or thieves or greedy graspers for more or drunkards or slanderers or swindlers will not have a share in the kingdom of God. ¹¹ And these are just the characters some of you used to be. But now you have washed yourselves clean, you have been consecrated, you are now in right standing with God, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God.

¹³ though I once used to abuse, persecute, and insult Him. But mercy was shown me by Him, because I did it in ignorance and unbelief, ¹⁴ and the spiritual blessing of our Lord in increasing floods has come upon me, accompanied by faith and love inspired by union with Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ It is a saying to be trusted and deserves our fullest acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; and I am the foremost of them. ¹⁶ Yet, mercy was shown me for the very purpose that in my case as the foremost of sinners Jesus might display His perfect patience, to make me an example to those who in the future might believe on Him to obtain eternal life.

²⁵ With gentleness he must correct his opponents, for God might grant them repentance that would lead them to a full knowledge of the truth, ²⁶ and they might recover their senses and escape from the devil's trap in which they have been caught by him to do his will.

⁹ The Lord is not slow about His promise, in the sense in which some think of slowness, but He is really dealing patiently with you, because He is not willing for any to perish but for all to have an opportunity to repent?
