⁹ and do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our forefather? For I tell you, God can raise up descendants for Abraham even out of these stones.

¹¹ I tell you, many will come from the east and from the west and take their seats at the feast with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, 'in the kingdom of heaven, ¹² while the heirs of the kingdom will be turned out into the darkness outside, where they will be weeping and grinding their teeth."

²¹ for from the inside, that is, from the hearts of men, designs for doing evil come, sexual immorality, stealing, murder,

⁸ Produce, then, fruit that is consistent with the repentance that you profess, and do not even begin to say within yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our forefather,' for I tell you, God can raise up descendants for Abraham even out of these stones.

²² Jesus saw that they were arguing, and answered them: "Why are you arguing so in your hearts?

³⁹ So when the Pharisee who invited Him saw it, he said to himself, "If He were really a prophet, He would know who and of what character the woman is who is clinging to Him -- that she is a social outcast."

¹⁷ So he began to argue with himself, 'What am I to do, because I have nowhere to store my crops?'

²⁴ So he called and said, 'Father Abraham, take pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool off my tongue, because I am ceaselessly tortured in this flame.'

⁴⁰ But He answered, "I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out!"

³³ They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants and we never have been anybody's slaves. How can you say to us, 'You will be set free'?"

³⁹ They answered Him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you are Abraham's children, you must be practicing what Abraham did. ⁴⁰ But right now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that He has learned from God. Abraham never did that.

⁵³ You are not greater than our forefather Abraham, are you? He is dead and the prophets are dead. Who do you claim to be?"

²⁶ Brothers, descendants of the race of Abraham, and all among you who reverence God, it is to us that the message of this salvation has been sent.

¹⁴ Symeon has told how God at first graciously visited the heathen to take from among them a people to bear His name.

¹ Then what are we to say about our forefather Abraham?

¹¹ Afterward he received the mark of circumcision as God's seal of his right standing with Him on condition of faith which he had before he was circumcised, that he might be the forefather of all who have faith while still uncircumcised, that they might have their faith credited to them as right standing with God; ¹² and the forefather of those Jews who not only belong to the circumcision but also follow in the footsteps of our forefather Abraham in the faith he had before he was circumcised. ¹³ For the promise made to Abraham and his descendants, that he should own the world, was not conditioned on the law, but on the right standing he had with God through faith. ¹⁴ For if the law party is to possess the world, then faith has been nullified and the promise has been made null and void. ¹⁵ For the law results in wrath alone, but where there is no law, there can be no violation of it. ¹⁶ So it is conditioned on faith, that it might be in accordance with God's unmerited favor, so that the promise might be in force for all the descendants of Abraham, not only for those who belong to the law party but also for those who belong to the faith group of Abraham. He is the father of us all, ¹⁷ as the Scripture says, "I have made you the father of many nations." That is, the promise is in force in the sight of God in whom he put his faith, the God who can bring the dead to life and can call to Himself the things that do not exist as though they did.

⁷ nor are they all children of Abraham, because they are his descendants, but the promise was "In the line of Isaac your descendants will I be counted." ⁸ That is, it is not Abraham's natural descendants who are God's children, but those who are made children by the promise are counted his true descendants.

²⁷ Just the opposite: God chose what the world calls foolish to put the wise to shame, what the world calls weak to put the strong to shame, ²⁸ what the world calls of low degree, yea, what it counts as nothing and what it thinks does not exist, God chose to put a stop to what it thinks exists,

²⁷ For all of you who have been baptized into union with Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. ²⁸ There is no room for Jew or Greek, no room for slave or freeman, no room for male or female, for you are all one through union with Christ Jesus. ²⁹ And if you belong to Christ, then you are real descendants of Abraham, and heirs in accordance with the promise made to him.

²² For the Scripture says that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave girl, the other by a free woman. ²³ But the child of the slave girl was born in the ordinary course of nature, while the child of the free woman was born to fulfill the promise. ²⁴ This is spoken as an allegory. For these women are two covenants, one coming from Mount Sinai, bearing children that are to be slaves; ²⁵ that is, Hagar (and Hagar means Mount Sinai, in Arabia) and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for Jerusalem is in slavery with her children. ²⁶ But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. ²⁷ For the Scripture says: "Rejoice, you childless woman, who never bore a child; break forth into shouting, you who feel no birth pangs; for the desolate woman has many children, even more than the married one." ²⁸ Now we, brothers, like Isaac, are children born to fulfill the promise. ²⁹ But just as then the child born in the ordinary course of nature persecuted the one born by the power of the Spirit, so it is today. ³⁰ But what does the Scripture say? "Drive off the slave girl and her son, for the slave girl's son shall never share the inheritance with the son of the free woman." ³¹ So, brothers, we are children, not of a slave girl but of a free woman.

¹² At that time you were without any connection with Christ; you were aliens to the commonwealth of Israel, strangers to the sacred compacts made by God's promise, with no hope, and no God in the world. ¹³ But now through your union with Christ Jesus you who were once far away have through the blood of Christ been brought near.
