¹³ After they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Wake up! Tenderly take the child and His mother, and escape to Egypt; stay there until I further direct you, for Herod is going to search for the child to destroy Him." ¹⁴ Then he awoke and tenderly took the child and His mother by night and made their escape to Egypt; ¹⁵ he stayed there until Herod's death, so as to fulfill what the Lord had said by the prophet, "Out of Egypt I called my Son." ¹⁶ Then Herod, because he saw that a trick had been played on him by the stargazers, was very angry, and sent and slaughtered all the boy babies in Bethlehem and in all that neighborhood, from two years down, in accordance with the time which he had found out from the stargazers.

³ Then the high priests and the elders of the people met in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, ⁴ and plotted to arrest Jesus by stratagem and put Him to death.

¹ As soon as day broke, all the high priests and elders held a consultation against Jesus, to put Him to death. ² So they bound Him, led Him away, and turned Him over to Pilate the governor.

⁷ But those tenants said among themselves, 'This is his heir; come on, let us kill him, and all that is coming to him will be ours.' ⁸ So they took him and killed him, and threw his body outside the vineyard.

¹⁴ But when the tenants saw him, they argued among themselves, 'This is the heir; let us kill him, so that what he inherits may be ours.'

⁴⁷ So the high priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council, and began to say, "What are we to do? For this man is certainly performing many wonder-works. ⁴⁸ If we let Him go on this way, everybody will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and blot out both our city and nation." ⁴⁹ But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing about this; ⁵⁰ you do not take into account that it is for your own welfare that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should be destroyed." ⁵¹ Now he did not say this on his own authority, but because he was high priest that year he uttered this prophecy from God, that Jesus was to die for the nation, ⁵² and not only for the nation, but also to unite the scattered children of God. ⁵³ So from that day they plotted to kill Jesus.

²⁷ "For in this city they actually met against your holy Servant Jesus, whom you had consecrated -- Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the heathen and the peoples of Israel, ²⁸ to do all that your hand and will had predetermined to take place.

²⁴ When the military commander of the temple square and the high priest heard this, they were utterly at a loss to know how this might turn out. ²⁵ But somebody came by and reported to them, "The men that you put in jail are standing right here in the temple square, teaching the people." ²⁶ Then the military commander went with his attendants and brought them back, but without any violence, for they were afraid of being pelted with stones by the people. ²⁷ So they brought them and had them stand before the council. And the high priest asked them, ²⁸ "Did we not positively forbid you to teach anymore on this authority, and yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and now want to bring on us the people's vengeance for this man's death!"

² but in these latter days He has spoken to us through a Son, whom He had appointed lawful owner of everything, and through whom He had made the worlds.
