²¹ "A curse on you, Chorazin! A curse on you, Bethsaida! For if the wonder-works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, long ago they would have repented in sackcloth and ashes.

²² Moreover, I tell you, on the day of judgment the punishment will be lighter for Tyre and Sidon than for you!

⁴¹ The men of Nineveh will rise with the leaders of this age at the judgment and condemn them, for they turned to the message preached by Jonah, and there is more than Jonah here! ⁴² The queen of the south will rise with the leaders of this age at the judgment and condemn them, for she came from the farthest limits of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and there is more than Solomon here!

²¹ Then Jesus left there and slipped away to the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon.

⁷ A curse on the world for such influences to do wrong! For they must come, but a curse on the man from whom these influences come!

For you pay tithes on mint and dill and cummin, and yet leave out the more vital matters of the law, justice, love and fidelity. These latter especially you ought to have done, but ought not to have left out the former. ²⁴ You blind leaders, who are straining out the gnat but gulping down the camel! ²⁵ A curse on you, you hypocritical scribes and Pharisees, for you clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of your greed and self-indulgence. ²⁶ You blind Pharisees! You must first clean the inside of the cup and the dish, so that the outside may be clean too. ²⁷ "A curse on you, you hypocritical scribes and Pharisees, for you are like white-washed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead people's bones and everything that is unclean! ²⁸ So you, too, on the outside seem to people to be upright, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. ²⁹ "A curse on you, you hypocritical scribes and Pharisees, for you build tombs for the prophets, and decorate monuments for the upright,

²⁴ The Son of Man is going away as the Scriptures say of Him, but a curse will be on that man by whom He is betrayed. It would have been better for that man, if he had never been born!"

⁸ and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and from the other side of the Jordan, and from the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon -- yes, a vast throng of people, as they kept hearing of the great things that He was doing, came to Him.

⁴⁵ Then He insisted that the disciples at once get into their boat and cross ahead of Him toward Bethsaida, while He was sending the crowd away.

²⁴ Then He left there and went into the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon. He went into a house and wanted no one to know that He was there. But He could not escape public notice.

³¹ He left the neighborhood of Tyre and went by way of Sidon through the district of the Ten Cities down to the Sea of Galilee.

¹⁷ Then He came down with them and took His stand on a level place, where there was a great throng of His disciples and a vast crowd of people from all over Judea and from Jerusalem and the seacoast district of Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear Him and to be cured of their diseases.

¹⁰ Now the apostles returned and told Jesus all that they had done. Then He took them and privately retired to a town called Bethsaida.

No, you are to go down to the regions of the dead.

⁴² But a curse on you Pharisees, because you pay tithes on mint, rue, and every tiny garden herb, but neglect justice and the love of God! These latter especially you ought to have done, but ought not to have neglected the former. ⁴³ A curse on you Pharisees, because you like to have the front seats in synagogues, and to be greeted with honor in public places! ⁴⁴ A curse on you, because you are like unmarked graves which men walk over without knowing it!" ⁴⁵ Then an expert in the law interrupted Him and said, "Teacher, in saying this you are insulting us, too." ⁴⁶ He said, "Yes, a curse on you experts in the law, too, because you load people down with loads too heavy to carry, and yet you do not touch the loads yourselves with one of your fingers! ⁴⁷ A curse on you, because you build monuments for the prophets, whom your forefathers killed! ⁴⁸ So you testify to what your forefathers did and approve it, because they killed them and you build monuments for them. ⁴⁹ This is why the Wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill, and some they will persecute'; ⁵⁰ so that the blood of all the prophets that has been shed from the creation of the world may be charged against the men of this age -- ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be charged against the men of this age. ⁵² A curse on you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to the door of knowledge! You did not go in yourselves, and you kept out those who tried to get in."

⁴⁴ Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.

⁵ Jesus answered, "I most solemnly say to you, no one can ever get into the kingdom of God, unless he is born of water and the Spirit. ⁶ Whatever is born of the physical is physical, and whatever is born of the Spirit is spiritual. ⁷ Never wonder at my telling you that you must all be born from above. ⁸ The wind blows where it pleases, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. That is just the way it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." ⁹ Then Nicodemus answered by asking, "How can this be?" ¹⁰ Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel and do not know this?

²¹ and they went to Philip who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and kept making this request of him, "Sir, we want to see Jesus."

²⁰ Now Herod cherished a bitter grudge against the people of Tyre and Sidon. So in a united body they came to meet him, and after winning the favor of Blastus, the king's chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their country depended for its food supply upon the king's country.

⁴⁴ The next sabbath almost the whole town turned out to hear God's message. ⁴⁵ But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were completely overcome by their jealousy and began to contradict the statements made by Paul, and even to abuse him. ⁴⁶ Then Paul and Barnabas courageously spoke out, "God's message had to be spoken to you Jews first, but since you continue to thrust it from you and since you show yourselves unworthy to receive eternal life, now and here we turn to the heathen. ⁴⁷ For here are the orders that the Lord has given us: 'I have made you a light to the heathen, To be the means of salvation to the very ends of the earth.'" ⁴⁸ The heathen kept on listening and rejoicing and giving the glory to God's message, and all who had been destined to eternal life believed,

³ The next day we landed at Sidon, and Julius kindly permitted Paul to visit his friends and enjoy their attentions.

²⁵ Because they could not agree among themselves, they started to leave, when Paul had spoken one word more: "The Holy Spirit beautifully expressed it in speaking to your forefathers through the prophet Isaiah: ²⁶ 'Go to this people and say to them, "You will listen, and listen, and never understand, and you will look, and look, and never see! ²⁷ For this people's soul has grown dull, and they scarcely hear with their ears, and they have shut tight their eyes, so that they may never see with their eyes, and understand with their souls, and turn to me, that I may cure them."' ²⁸ "So you must understand that this message of God's salvation has been sent to the heathen; and they will listen to it!"

¹¹ Alas for them, because they have trod the road that Cain did; for gain they have rushed into Balaam's error and have perished in rebellion like that of Korah!
