¹ For since the law cast only a shadow of the blessings to come and did not possess the reality itself of those blessings, the priests with the same sacrifices that are perpetually offered year after year cannot make perfect those who come to worship. ² Otherwise, would they not have ceased offering them, because those who offered them, having once been purified, would have had no further consciousness of sins? ³ On the other hand, through these sacrifices there is given a real reminder of their sins, ⁴ for the blood of bulls and goats is unable to take away sins. ⁵ So, when Christ was coming into the world, He said: ⁶ "Sacrifice and offering you did not wish, but a body you have prepared for me; in burnt-offerings and sin-offerings you never took delight. ⁷ Then I said, 'See, I have come, just as the Scripture writes about me in the book, O God, to do your will.'" ⁸ Although at first He said, "You never wished or took delight in sacrifices and offerings, burnt-offerings and sin-offerings" -- all of which are repeatedly offered in accordance with the law -- ⁹ He afterward said, "See, I have come to do your will." He is taking away the first to let the second take its place. ¹⁰ It is by this will of God that we are consecrated through the offering of Jesus' body once for all. ¹¹ Every other priest stands officiating day after day and over and over again offering the same sacrifices, although they are unable to take away our sins. ¹² But this One offered up once for all and for all time one sacrifice for sins, and once for all took His seat at God's right hand, ¹³ from that time waiting till His enemies should be made the footstool of His feet. ¹⁴ For by that one sacrifice He has made perfect for all time those who are consecrated to Him. ¹⁵ Now the Holy Spirit, too, gives us the testimony, for after saying: ¹⁶ "'This is the covenant that I will make with them: In those last days,' says the Lord, 'I will put my laws into their hearts, and write them on their minds,'" ¹⁷ He continues to say: "I will never, never any more recall their sins and deeds of wrong." ¹⁸ For when these are forgiven, there is no more need of an offering for sin. ¹⁹ Since then, my brothers, we have free access to the real sanctuary through the blood of Jesus, ²⁰ the new and living way which He opened for us, through the curtain, that is, His physical nature, ²¹ and since in Him we have a Great Priest over the house of God, ²² let us continue to draw near to God with sincere hearts and perfect faith; with our hearts cleansed from the sense of sin, and our bodies bathed in clean water; ²³ let us, without ever wavering, keep on holding to the hope that we profess, for He is to be trusted who has made the promise, ²⁴ Let us continue so to consider one another as to stimulate one another to love and good deeds. ²⁵ Let us stop neglecting our meeting together, as some do, but let us continue to encourage one another, and all the more because you see that the great day is drawing near. ²⁶ For if we go willfully sinning after we have received full knowledge of the truth, there is no sacrifice left to be offered for our sins, ²⁷ but only a terrifying prospect of judgment and that fiery indignation which is going to devour God's enemies. ²⁸ Anyone who breaks the law of Moses pays the death penalty without any show of pity, on the evidence of two or three witnesses only. ²⁹ How much severer punishment do you suppose that one deserves who tramples the Son of God underfoot, and counts as a common thing the blood of the covenant by which he was consecrated, and has insulted the Spirit that grants God's unmerited favor? ³⁰ For we know who it was that said, "Vengeance belongs to me, I will pay back!" and again, "The Lord will be His people's judge." ³¹ It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the ever living God! ³² But you must continue to remember those earlier days when first you received the light and then endured so great a struggle with persecution, ³³ partly by being exposed as a public spectacle to insults and violent sufferings, and partly by showing yourselves ready to share with those who were living in this condition. ³⁴ For you showed sympathy with those who were in prison and cheerfully submitted to the violent seizure of your property, for you knew that you had in yourselves and in heaven one that was lasting. ³⁵ So you must never give up your confident courage, for it holds a rich reward for you. ³⁶ Indeed, to carry out the will of God and to receive the blessing He has promised, you need endurance, for: ³⁷ "In just a very little while, the Coming One will come and not delay; ³⁸ Meantime, my righteous servant will live by faith. But if a man draws back, my soul has no delight in him." ³⁹ But we are not of a disposition to draw back so as to perish, but we have faith that leads to the saving of the soul.

²⁰ But just as this thought occurred to him, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, and said, "Joseph, descendant of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for it is through the influence of the Holy Spirit that she has become an expectant mother. ²¹ And she will have a son, and you must name Him Jesus, for it is He who is to save His people from their sins." ²² Now all this occurred to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ²³ "The virgin will become pregnant and have a son, and they will call Him Immanuel" -- which means "God with us."

⁴³ "Whenever the foul spirit goes out of a man, it wanders about in deserts in search of rest, but cannot find it. ⁴⁴ Then it says, 'I will go back to my house which I left,' and it finds it unoccupied, swept, and ready for use. ⁴⁵ "Then it goes and gets seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and make their home there, and so the end of that man is worse than the beginning. This is the way it will be with the wicked leaders of this age."

²⁴ So he called and said, 'Father Abraham, take pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool off my tongue, because I am ceaselessly tortured in this flame.'

⁸ I tell you, He will give them justice and protection, and that without delay. But when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?"

²⁷ But bring those enemies of mine here who did not want me to become king over them and slay them in my presence!'"

If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever, and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my own flesh." ⁵² But the Jews kept on wrangling with one another and saying, "How can He give us His flesh to eat?" ⁵³ Then Jesus said to them, "I most solemnly say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you do not have life in you. ⁵⁴ Whoever continues to eat my flesh and drink my blood already possesses eternal life, and I will raise him to life on the last day. ⁵⁵ For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. ⁵⁶ Whoever continues to eat my flesh and drink my blood continues to live in union with me and I in union with him.

¹⁷ If anyone is willing to keep on doing God's will, he will know whether my teaching comes from God, or merely expresses my own ideas.

And you are now clean, though not all of you are."

⁶ Jesus answered him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

²² "If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But now the fact is, they have no excuse for their sin. ²³ Whoever continues to hate me continues to hate my Father too. ²⁴ If I had not done things among them that no one else has ever done, they would not be guilty of sin. But now the fact is, they have seen and even hated both my Father and me.

²⁶ "When the Helper comes whom I will send from the Father to you, the Spirit of truth that comes from the Father, He will testify to me.

¹² As long as I was with them, I kept them by your power which you gave me, and I protected them, and not one of them was lost, except the one who is now doomed to be lost, so that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

¹⁹ And so for their sake I am consecrating myself, that they too may be consecrated by truth.

³⁴ but one of the soldiers thrust a lance into His side and blood and water at once flowed out.

¹⁹ In the evening of that same first day of the week, even with the doors of the room bolted where the disciples had met for fear of the Jews, Jesus went in and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you!" ²⁰ On saying this, He showed them His hands and His side, and the disciples were thrilled with joy over seeing their Lord. ²¹ Jesus again said to them, "Peace be with you! Just as my Father has sent me forth, so I am now sending you." ²² On saying this, He breathed upon them, and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit! ²³ If you get forgiveness for people's sins, they are forgiven them; if you let people's sins fasten upon them, they will remain fastened upon them." ²⁴ Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, who was called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came in. ²⁵ So the rest of the disciples kept saying to him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail prints in His hands, and put my finger into them, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe it!" ²⁶ Just a week later the disciples were in the room again and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were bolted, Jesus came in and stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you!" ²⁷ Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and look at my hands, and take your hand and put it in my side, and stop being an unbeliever, but be a believer!" ²⁸ Thomas answered Him, "My Lord and my God!" ²⁹ Jesus said to him, "Is it because you have seen me, Thomas, that you believe? Blessed be those who believe, even though they have not seen me!"

³¹ But these have been recorded, in order that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life, as bearers of His name.

¹³ When they reached the city, they went to the room upstairs where they had been staying; they were: Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alpheus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. ¹⁴ With one mind they were all continuing to devote themselves to prayer, with the women and Mary and His brothers.

¹ When the day of Pentecost had now come, they were all meeting in one mind,

³³ So He has been exalted to God's right hand and has received from His Father, as promised, and poured out upon us the Holy Spirit, as you see and hear. ³⁴ For David did not go up to heaven, but he himself says: 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, ³⁵ Until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet."'

⁴² And they devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to fellowship with one another, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

⁴¹ So they went out from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer disgrace for Jesus' name;

⁵¹ "You people, stubborn in will, heathenish in hearts and ears, you are always resisting the Holy Spirit, as your forefathers did, too.

¹ Saul heartily approved of his being put to death. So on that day a severe persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all of them, except the apostles, were scattered over Judea and Samaria. ² Some devout men buried Stephen and made loud lamentation for him. ³ But Saul continued to harass the church, and by going from house to house and dragging off men and women he continued to put them into prison.

³⁶ For David, after having served God's purpose in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid among his forefathers, and so he did experience decay,

³⁰ After leading them out of the jail, he said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" ³¹ They answered, "Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you and your household will be saved."

⁷ On the first day of the week when we had met to break bread, Paul addressed them, since he was leaving the next day, and prolonged his speech till midnight.

³² And now I commit you to the Lord, and to the message of His favor, which is able to build you up and to give you your proper possession among all God's consecrated people.

³³ Then the colonel came up and seized Paul and ordered him to be bound with two chains; he then asked who he was and what he had done.

¹³ and on the road at noon, your Majesty, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, flash around me and my fellow-travelers.

²⁵ Because they could not agree among themselves, they started to leave, when Paul had spoken one word more: "The Holy Spirit beautifully expressed it in speaking to your forefathers through the prophet Isaiah:

¹⁷ For in the good news God's Way of man's right standing with Him is uncovered, the Way of faith that leads to greater faith, just as the Scripture says, "The upright man must live by faith."

⁷ eternal life to those who patiently continue doing good and striving for glory, honor, and immortality,

² by whom we have an introduction through faith into this state of God's favor, in which we safely stand; and let us continue exulting in the hope of enjoying the glorious presence of God. ³ And not only that, but this too: let us continue exulting in our sufferings, for we know that suffering produces endurance, ⁴ and endurance, tested character, and tested character, hope,

¹⁵ For you do not have a sense of servitude to fill you with dread again, but the consciousness of adopted sons by which we cry, "Abba," that is, "Father."

²⁵ But a hope that is seen is not real hope, for who hopes for what he actually sees? But if we hope for something we do not see, we keep on patiently waiting for it.

³⁴ who can condemn them? Christ Jesus who died, or rather, who was raised from the dead, is now at God's right hand, and is actually pleading for us.

¹⁵ For He says to Moses, "I will have mercy on any man that I choose to have mercy on, and take pity on any man that I choose to take pity on."

⁹ For if with your lips you acknowledge the fact that Jesus is Lord, and in your hearts you believe that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. ¹⁰ For in their hearts people exercise the faith that leads to right standing, and with their lips they make the acknowledgment which means salvation.

⁴ But how did God reply to him? "I have reserved for myself seven thousand men who have never bent their knees to Baal."

²⁷ And this my covenant I make with them, when I shall take away their sins."

² Stop living in accordance with the customs of this world, but by the new ideals that mold your minds continue to transform yourselves, so as to find and follow God's will; that is, what is good, well-pleasing to Him, and perfect.

⁴ For the civil authorities are God's servants to do you good. But if you practice doing wrong, you should dread them, for they do not wield the sword for nothing. Indeed, they are God's servants to inflict punishment upon people who do wrong.

¹¹ Do this in particular because you know the present crisis, that it is high time for you to wake up out of your sleep, for our salvation is now nearer to us than when we first believed. ¹² The night has almost passed; the day is at hand. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness, and put on the weapons of light. ¹³ Let us live becomingly for people who are in the light of day, not in carousing and drunkenness, nor in sexual immorality and licentiousness, nor in quarreling and jealousy.
