² in which you once lived in accordance with the spirit of this present world, and the mighty prince of the air, who is always at work in the disobedient, among whom all of us, we Jews as well as you heathen,

¹⁹ The Son of Man came eating and drinking with others, and they say, 'Just look at Him! A glutton and a wine-drinker, a chum of tax-collectors and notorious sinners!' And yet wisdom is vindicated by her doings!"

⁴³ "Whenever the foul spirit goes out of a man, it wanders about in deserts in search of rest, but cannot find it. ⁴⁴ Then it says, 'I will go back to my house which I left,' and it finds it unoccupied, swept, and ready for use. ⁴⁵ "Then it goes and gets seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and make their home there, and so the end of that man is worse than the beginning. This is the way it will be with the wicked leaders of this age."

³⁸ the field is the world; the good seed are the members of the kingdom; the wild wheat seed are the followers of the wicked one.

²¹ When a strong man well armed keeps guard over his dwelling, his property is secure. ²² But when a man stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he strips him of all his arms on which he relied, and distributes his goods as spoils. ²³ Whoever is not in partnership with me is against me, and whoever does not gather in partnership with me, scatters. ²⁴ "When the foul spirit goes out of a man, it wanders about in deserts in search for rest, and since it finds none, it says, 'I will go back to my house which I left.' ²⁵ And it goes and finds it unoccupied, swept, and ready for use. ²⁶ Then it goes and gets seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and make their home there, and so the end of that man is worse than the beginning."

⁸ And his master praised the dishonest manager, because he acted with shrewd business sense, for the men of the world act with more business sense toward their fellows than the men who enjoy spiritual light.

² So the high priests and the scribes continued to seek how they might put Him to death, for they were afraid of the people. ³ But Satan entered into Judas, who is called Iscariot, who belonged to the circle of the Twelve.

³¹ "Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has asked permission to sift all of you like wheat,

⁷ It is impossible for the world to hate you; it is I whom it hates, because I continue to testify that its works are wicked.

²³ He continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You belong to this present world; I do not belong to this present world.

⁴⁴ You sprang from the devil, your real father, and you want to practice your father's wishes. He was a murderer from the very start, and he does not stand by the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks out of his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

³¹ This world is now in process of judgment; the prince of this world is now to be expelled.

² So Jesus, while supper was on -- although He knew that the devil had suggested to Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him --

²⁷ As soon as he took the bread, Satan took possession of Judas. Then Jesus said to him, "Make quick work of what you are to do."

³⁰ "I shall not talk much more with you, for the evil ruler of this world is coming and he has nothing in common with me,

¹⁹ If you belonged to the world, the world would love what is its own. But it is because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, that the world hates you.

¹¹ about judgment, because the evil ruler of this world has been condemned.

³ And Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan so completely possessed your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and kept back for yourselves a part of the money received for the land?

³⁵ At last the city recorder quieted the mob and said: "Men of Ephesus, who in the world does not know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of the image that fell down from heaven?

² Stop living in accordance with the customs of this world, but by the new ideals that mold your minds continue to transform yourselves, so as to find and follow God's will; that is, what is good, well-pleasing to Him, and perfect.

¹⁰ not that you are to stop all dealings with sexually immoral people of this world, any more than with its greedy graspers, or its idolaters, for then you would have to get clear out of the world.

¹¹ And these are just the characters some of you used to be. But now you have washed yourselves clean, you have been consecrated, you are now in right standing with God, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God.

⁴ In their case, the god of this world has blinded the eyes of the unbelievers, to keep the glorious light of the good news of Christ, who is the likeness of God, from dawning upon them.

⁴ who gave Himself for our sins, to save us from the present wicked world in accordance with the will of our God and Father;

³ once lived while gratifying the cravings of our lower nature, as we continued to carry out the impulses of our lower nature and its thoughts, and by nature we were exposed to God's wrath, as the rest of mankind.

²² to lay aside, with your former way of living, your old self which is on the way to destruction in accordance with its deceptive impulses;

⁶ Stop letting anyone deceive you with groundless arguments about these things, for it is because of these very sins that God's anger comes down upon the disobedient.

¹² For our contest is not with human foes alone, but with the rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers of this dark world; that is, with the spirit-forces of evil challenging us in the heavenly contest.

²¹ So you, who were once estranged from Him, and hostile in disposition as shown by your wrongdoings, He has now reconciled

⁶ It is on account of these very sins that God's anger is coming. ⁷ You too used to practice these sins, when you used to live that sort of life.

¹⁰ for Demas has forsaken me because he loved the present world, and has gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia;

⁷ Such a man, indeed, a person with two minds,

⁴ You faithless wives! Do you not know that the friendship of the world means enmity with God? So whoever wants to be a friend to the world puts himself down as an enemy to God.

¹⁴ As obedient children, stop molding your character by the evil desires you used to cherish when you did not know any better,

³ For the time that is past is enough for you to have accomplished what the heathen like to do, leading lives that are steeped in sensuality, lustful desires, drunkenness, carousing, revelry, dissipation, and idolatry that leads to lawlessness,

¹⁴ They have eyes full of adultery and insatiable by sin. They practice enticing unsteady souls. They have trained their hearts in greed. They are doomed to a curse! ¹⁵ Stop loving the world, or the things that are in the world. If anyone persists in loving the world, there is no love for the Father in his heart, ¹⁶ because everything that is in the world, the things that our lower nature and eyes are longing for, and the proud pretensions of life, do not come from the Father, but from the world; ¹⁷ and the world is passing away and with it the evil longings it incites, but whoever perseveres in doing God's will lives on forever.

⁸ Whoever practices sin belongs to the devil, because the devil has practiced sin from the beginning. This is why the Son of God appeared, to undo the devil's works.

¹⁰ This is the way to distinguish God's children from the devil's children. No one who fails to do right is God's child, and no one who fails to love his brother.

⁴ You are children of God, dear children, and you have conquered these men, because He who is in our hearts is greater than he who is in the world.

⁴ for every child of God continues to conquer the world. Our faith is the victory that has conquered the world.

¹⁹ We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the power of the evil one.

⁹ So the huge dragon, the ancient serpent, called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world, was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him.

⁸ All the inhabitants of the earth whose names, from the foundation of the world, have not been written in the slaughtered Lamb's book of life, will worship him.

¹⁴ He leads the inhabitants of the earth astray because of the wonders he is permitted to perform in the presence of the wild beast, telling the inhabitants of the earth to erect a statue to the wild beast that bears the sword-thrust and yet has lived.

¹⁷ Then the seventh angel emptied his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the sanctuary from the throne, saying, "It is done."

² He seized the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.
