⁵ You younger men, on your part, must be submissive to the elders. And you must all put on the servant's apron of humility to one another, because God opposes the haughty but bestows His unmerited favor on the humble.

¹⁰ In brotherly love be affectionate to one another, in personal honors put one another to the fore,

¹⁴ Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and put a stop to gratifying the evil desires that lurk in your lower nature.

²¹ keep on living in subordination to one another out of reverence to Christ.

³ Stop acting from motives of selfish strife or petty ambition, but in humility practice treating one another as your superiors.

¹² So as God's own chosen people, consecrated and dearly loved, you must once for all clothe yourselves with tenderheartedness, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience; you must keep on

¹⁷ Continue to obey and to be submissive to your leaders, for they are ever watching in defense of your souls, as men who will have to give account of their trust. Treat them in this way, so that they may work with joy and not with grief.

⁶ But He gives a greater spiritual blessing. He says, "God opposes haughty people but blesses humble people."

³ Your adornments must be not of an external nature, with braids of hair or ornaments of gold, or changes of dress, ⁴ but they must be of an internal nature, the character concealed in the heart, in the imperishable quality of a quiet and gentle spirit, which is of great value in the sight of God.

¹ So then, since Christ has suffered in our physical form, you too must arm yourselves with the same determination. For whoever suffers in his physical form has done with sin,

⁵ but they will have to give account for it to Him who is ready to judge living and dead.
