¹⁸ For Christ Himself, once for all, died for our sins, the Innocent for the guilty to bring us to God, being put to death in physical form but made alive in the Spirit,

¹⁹ Now while he was on the bench, his wife sent him this word, "Do not have anything to do with that righteous man, for I have this morning suffered excruciating pain in a dream caused by Him."

²⁴ So Pilate, since he saw that he was making no headway with them, but that a riot was about to break out instead, took some water and washed his hands before the crowd, and said, "I am not responsible for this man's death; you must see to it yourselves."

¹⁴ Yes, you disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked a murderer to be pardoned as a favor to you,

¹⁴ and he said, 'The God of our forefathers has appointed you to learn His will and to see the Righteous One and to hear Him speak,

⁴ proved to be God's Son in power by the resurrection from the dead -- I mean, Jesus Christ, our Lord,

²⁵ who was given up to death because of our shortcomings and was raised again to give us right standing with God.

² by whom we have an introduction through faith into this state of God's favor, in which we safely stand; and let us continue exulting in the hope of enjoying the glorious presence of God.

⁶ For when we were still helpless, Christ at the proper time died for us ungodly men. ⁷ Now a man will scarcely ever give his life for an upright person, though once in a while a man is brave enough to die for a generous friend. ⁸ But God proves His love for us by the fact that Christ died for us while we were still sinners.

³ For though the law could not do it, because it was made helpless through our lower nature, yet God, by sending His own Son in a body similar to that of our lower nature, and as a sacrifice for sin, passed sentence upon sin through His body,

¹¹ If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead has His home within you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give your mortal bodies life through His Spirit that has His home within you.

²⁴ Not that we are trying to lord it over your faith, but we are workers with you to promote your joy, for in your faith you are standing firm.

²¹ He made Him who personally knew nothing of sin to be a sin-offering for us, so that through union with Him we might come into right standing with God.

⁴ For though He was crucified in weakness, yet by the power of God He goes on living. We too, indeed, show weakness through our union with Him, yet by the power of God we too shall be alive toward you through fellowship with Him.

⁴ who gave Himself for our sins, to save us from the present wicked world in accordance with the will of our God and Father;

¹³ Christ ransomed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us -- for the Scripture says, "Cursed be everyone who is hanged on a tree" --

¹⁶ to reconcile them both to God with His cross after He had killed the hostility through it. ¹⁷ When He came, He brought the good news of peace for you who were far away and for you who were near; ¹⁸ for it is by Him through one Spirit that both of us now have an introduction to the Father.

²¹ So you, who were once estranged from Him, and hostile in disposition as shown by your wrongdoings, He has now reconciled ²² by His death in His human body, so as to present you consecrated, faultless, and blameless in His presence,

¹⁴ who gave Himself for us to ransom us from all iniquity and purify for Himself a people to be His very own, zealous of good works.

²⁶ for, if that had been the case, He would have had to suffer over and over again, ever since the creation of the world. But, as it is, once at the close of the ages He has appeared, to put away sin by His sacrifice.

²⁸ so Christ was offered once for all to take away the sins of many, but again He will appear, without having anything to do with sin, to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him to bring them final salvation.

⁶ You have condemned and murdered the upright man; he offers no resistance.

²¹ Indeed, it was to this kind of living that you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you might follow His footsteps. ²² He never committed a sin, and deceit was never found on His lips. ²³ Although He was abused, He never retorted; although He continued to suffer, He never threatened, but committed His case to Him who judges justly. ²⁴ He bore our sins in His own body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to uprightness. By His wounds you have been healed,

¹ So then, since Christ has suffered in our physical form, you too must arm yourselves with the same determination. For whoever suffers in his physical form has done with sin,

⁶ This is why the good news was preached to the dead too, that they may be judged in their physical nature as men are, but live in the Spirit as God does.

⁹ If we confess our sins, He is to be depended on, since He is just, to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from every wrong.
