⁸ If we claim "We are already free from sin," we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in our hearts.

²³ For everybody has sinned and everybody continues to come short of God's glory,

¹⁸ Let no one deceive himself. If any one of you supposes that he is wise in this world's wisdom, as compared with the rest of you, to become really wise he must become a fool.

³ For if anybody thinks he is somebody when really he is nobody, he deceives himself.

⁵ and perpetual friction between people who are depraved in mind and deprived of truth, who imagine that religion is only a means of gain.

¹³ But bad men and imposters will go on from bad to worse, misleading others and misled themselves.

⁴ Whoever says, "I know Him," but does not practice obedience to His commands is a liar, and there is no truth in his heart;

⁵ You know that He appeared to take our sins away, and that there is no sin in Him. ⁶ No one who continues to live in union with Him practices sin. No one who practices sin has ever seen Him or come to know Him.

² because of the truth that lives on in our hearts and will be with us forever: ³ For I am happy to have some brothers come and testify to the truth that is in you, since you are living by the truth.
