¹² And whether one puts into the building on the foundation gold or silver or costly stones, or wood or hay or straw,

⁶ is under no obligation at all to help his parent.' So you have set aside what God has said for the sake of what has been handed down to you. ⁷ You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied beautifully about you, when he said: ⁸ "'This people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far, far away from me; ⁹ Their worship of me is an empty show; the things they teach are only men's precepts.'"

³⁰ Even from your own number men will appear who will try, by speaking perversions of truth, to draw away the disciples after them.

¹⁷ But I beg you, brothers, to keep on the lookout for those who stir up divisions and put hindrances in your way, in opposition to the instruction that you had, and always avoid them.

¹⁷ Now who is qualified for such a task? I am, for I am not a peddler of God's message, like the most of them, but like a man of sincerity, like a man that is sent from God and living in His presence, in union with Christ I speak His message.

² On the other hand, I have renounced all underhanded, disgraceful methods; I neither practice cunning nor do I tamper with God's message, but by clear and candid statements of truth I try to commend myself to every human conscience in God's sight.

⁸ Take care that nobody captures you by the idle fancies of his so-called philosophy, following human tradition and the world's crude notions instead of Christ.

¹⁸ Stop letting anyone, in gratuitous humility and worship of angels, defraud you as an umpire, for such a one is taking his stand on the mere visions he has seen, and is groundlessly conceited over his sensuous mind. ¹⁹ Such a person is not continuing in connection with the Head, from which the whole body, when supplied and united through its joints and sinews, grows with a growth that God produces. ²⁰ If once through fellowship with Christ you died and were separated from the world's crude notions, why do you live as though you belonged to the world? Why submit to rules such as, ²¹ "You must not handle," "You must not taste," "You must not touch," ²² which refer to things that perish in the using, in accordance with human rules and teachings? ²³ Such practices have the outward expression of wisdom, with their self-imposed devotions, their self-humiliation, their torturings of the body, but they are of no value; they really satisfy the lower nature.

¹ Now the Spirit distinctly declares that in later times some will turn away from the faith, because they continuously give their attention to deceiving spirits and the things that demons teach ² through the pretensions of false teachers, men with seared consciences, ³ who forbid people to marry and teach them to abstain from certain sorts of food which God created for the grateful enjoyment of those who have faith and a clear knowledge of the truth.

⁶ If you continue to put these things before the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, ever feeding your own soul on the truths of the faith and of the fine teaching which you have followed. ⁷ But make it your habit to let worldly and old women's stories alone. Continue training yourself for the religious life.

³ If anyone teaches different doctrines and refuses to agree with the wholesome messages of our Lord Jesus Christ, the teaching that is in accordance with true religion,

¹⁶ Continue shunning worldly, futile phrases, for they lead on to greater depths of godlessness, ¹⁷ and their message will spread like a cancer; men like Hymenaeus and Philetus, ¹⁸ who have missed the truth by saying that the resurrection has already taken place, are undermining some people's faith.

²⁰ In any great house there are not only gold and silver articles but also wooden utensils, some for honorable uses and some for lowly uses.

⁷ who are always trying to learn but never able to come to a full knowledge of the truth.

¹³ But bad men and imposters will go on from bad to worse, misleading others and misled themselves.

³ For a time will come when they will not listen to wholesome teaching, but to gratify their own evil desires will surround themselves with teachers who teach to gratify their own evil desires, because their ears are itching so to be tickled,

⁹ and a man who continues to cling to the trustworthy message as he was taught it, so that he may be competent to encourage others with wholesome teaching and to convict those who oppose him. ¹⁰ For there are many insubordinate people, mere talkers with nothing to say, but deceivers of their own minds, especially those of the circumcision party, ¹¹ whose mouths must be stopped, for they upset whole families by teaching things they ought not to think, for the sake of dishonest gain.

⁹ But hold yourself aloof from foolish controversies, pedigrees, strife, and wrangles about the law, for these are fruitless and futile. ¹⁰ After one or two warnings to a man who is factious, stop having anything to do with him, ¹¹ for you may be sure that such a man is crooked and sinful, even self-condemned.

⁹ You must stop being carried away with varied and strange teachings. For it is a good thing for the heart to be strengthened by God's spiritual strength, not by special kinds of food, from which those adhering to them have gotten no good.

⁷ so that the genuineness of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes even after it is shown by the test of fire to be genuine, may result in your praise and glory and honor at the unveiling of Jesus Christ.

¹⁴ Yet I hold it somewhat against you that you have among you some who are clinging to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to set a trap for the children of Israel, to entice them to eat the meat that had been sacrificed to idols and to commit immoral practices.

¹⁸ I advise you to buy of me gold that has been refined in the fire, so that you may become rich, and white clothes to put on, to hide your shameful nakedness, and salve to put on your eyes, to make you see.
