² For whoever speaks in ecstasy is speaking not to men but to God, for no one understands him, and yet by the Spirit he is speaking secret truths.

¹¹ He answered: "It is you and not they who are granted the privilege of knowing the secrets of the kingdom of heaven.

¹¹ Then He said to them, "To you the secret of the kingdom of God has been entrusted, but to those who are on the outside everything is presented in stories, so that

¹⁷ And the following signs will attend those who believe: By using my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in foreign languages;

⁴ and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in foreign languages as the Spirit granted them to utter divine things. ⁵ Now there were devout Jews from every part of the world living in Jerusalem. ⁶ And when this sound was heard, the crowd rushed together in great excitement, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. ⁷ They were perfectly astounded, and in bewilderment they continued to say, "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? ⁸ So how is it that each of us hears them speaking in his own native tongue? ⁹ Parthians, Medes, Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia, of Judea and Cappadocia, of Pontus and Asia, ¹⁰ of Phrygia and Pamphylia, of Egypt and the district of Libya around Cyrene, transient dwellers from Rome, Jews and proselytes, ¹¹ Cretans and Arabs -- we hear them all alike telling in our own tongues the great wonders of God."

⁴⁶ for they heard them speaking in foreign languages and telling of the greatness of God. Then Peter asked,

⁶ and when Paul laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they began to speak in foreign tongues and to prophesy.

⁹ The men who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear the voice of Him who was speaking to me.

²⁵ To Him who can make you strong in accordance with the good news I bring and in accordance with the message preached about Jesus Christ, in accordance with the uncovering of the secret which for ages past had not been told,

⁷ rather, we are setting forth a wisdom that came from God, once a covered secret but now uncovered, which God marked off as His plan for bringing us to glory.

¹⁰ For God unveiled them to us through His Spirit, for the Spirit by searching discovers everything, even the deepest truths about God.

² If I should have the gift of prophecy, And know all secret truths, and knowledge in its every form, and have such perfect faith that I could move mountains, but have no love, I am nothing.

⁹ So it is with you; unless in your ecstatic speaking you speak a message that is clearly intelligible, how can the message spoken by you be understood? You might just as well be talking to the air! ¹⁰ There are, supposedly, ever so many languages in the world, and not one is without its own meaning. ¹¹ So if I do not know the meaning of the language, I should be a foreigner to the man who speaks it, and he would be a foreigner to me.

¹⁶ how is the man who occupies the place of the illiterate to say "Amen" to your thanksgiving? For he does not know what you are saying.

¹⁸ Thank God, I speak in ecstasy more than any of you. ¹⁹ But in the public congregation I would rather speak five words with my mind in action, in order to instruct the people too, than ten thousand words in ecstasy. ²⁰ Brothers, stop being children in intelligence, but as to evil keep on being babies; and yet as to intelligence be men of maturity. ²¹ In the law it is written, "By men of foreign languages and by the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord." ²² So speaking in ecstasy is meant as a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is meant, not for unbelievers but for believers. ²³ Hence, if the whole church has met and everybody speaks in ecstasy, and illiterate people or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are crazy?

²⁷ If anybody speaks in ecstasy, there must be only two, or three at most, and let one speak at a time, and someone explain what he says. ²⁸ But if there is no one to explain it, let him keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God alone.

⁵¹ Let me tell you a secret. We shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed,

³ and how by revelation the secret was made known to me, as I have briefly written before. ⁴ By reading this you will be able to understand my insight into the secret about the Christ -- ⁵ which in the earlier ages, so different from the present, was not made known to mankind as fully as now, but through the Spirit it has been revealed to His Holy apostles and prophets -- ⁶ that the heathen through union with Christ Jesus are fellow-heirs with the Jews, are members with them of the same body, and sharers with them of the promise through the good news, ⁷ for which I was called to serve in accordance with the gift of God's unmerited favor which was bestowed on me by the exercise of His power-- ⁸ yes, on me, the very least of all His people, this unmerited favor was bestowed -- that I might preach as good news to the heathen the boundless riches of Christ, ⁹ and to make clear how is to be carried out the trusteeship of this secret which has for ages been hidden away in God, the Creator of all things,

¹⁹ and for me that a message may be given me when I open my lips, so that I may boldly make known the open secret of the good news,

²⁶ the open secret, covered up from the people of former ages and generations, but now uncovered to God's people, ²⁷ to whom God has chosen to make known how glorious are the riches of this open secret among the heathen, namely, Christ in you the hope of your glorification.

² that their hearts may be encouraged, by having been knit together in love and by having atoned to the full assurance of understanding, so that they may finally reach the fullest knowledge of the open secret, Christ Himself,

⁹ but they must continue to hold the open secret of faith with a clear conscience.

¹⁶ Undoubtedly the mystery of our religion is a great wonder: "He was made visible in human form; He was vindicated by the Spirit; He was seen by angels; He was proclaimed among the heathen; He was trusted in throughout the world; He was taken up to glory."

⁷ but in the days when the seventh angel speaks, when he is about to blow his trumpet, then God's mysterious message, in accordance with the good news He gave to His slaves, the prophets, would be accomplished.
