²⁰ And going away they sent forth spies, which should feign themselves to be just men, that they might take hold of his words that so they might deliver him unto the governor.

¹⁵ Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in talk. ¹⁶ And they sent out unto him their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Master we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. ¹⁷ What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Cesar, or not? ¹⁸ But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? ¹⁹ Shew me the tribute-money. And they brought unto him a denarius. ²⁰ Jesus saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? ²¹ They say unto him, Cesars. Then saith he unto them, Render unto Cesar, the things which are Cesars; and, unto God, the things which are Gods. ²² When they heard [it], they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

² And when they had bound him, they led [him away], and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

² And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath, that they might accuse him.

And they marvelled at him.

²⁶ But they could not take hold of his word before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

²⁸ They led therefore Jesus from Caiphas, unto the hall of judgment: and it was early, and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled: but might eat the passover. ²⁹ Pilate therefore went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring you against this man? ³⁰ They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee. ³¹ Pilate therefore said unto them, Take ye him and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any one to death. ³² That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

³ And through covetousness will they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their destruction slumbreth not.
