¹⁸ And he suffered their manners in the wilderness, about the space of forty years.

¹⁷ Were they not all that came out of Egypt by Moses? And with whom was he grieved forty years? Was it not with them who had sinned? ¹⁸ Whose carcases fell in the wilderness? And to whom sware he, that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? ¹⁹ So we see, they could not enter in, because of unbelief.

³⁶ He brought them out, doing wonders and signs, in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

³⁹ Whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back into Egypt, ⁴⁰ Saying to Aaron, Make us gods to go before us; for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him. ⁴¹ And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands. ⁴² And God turned and gave them up, to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, Have ye offered victims and sacrifices to me, for forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? ⁴³ Yea, ye took up the shrine of Molock, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

¹ Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that all our fathers were under the cloud, ² and all passed through the sea, And were all baptized unto Moses, ³ in the cloud and in the sea, And all ate the same spiritual meat, ⁴ And all drank the same spiritual drink (for they drank out of the spiritual rock which followed them; and that rock was Christ) Yet, with the most of them, God was not well-pleased; ⁵ for they were overthrown in the wilderness. ⁶ Now these things were for our example, that we might not desire evil things, as they desired. ⁷ Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them, as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. ⁸ Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. ⁹ Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents. ¹⁰ Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer.

⁷ Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith) To day, ⁸ if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness, ⁹ Where your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. ¹⁰ Therefore I was grieved with that generation and said, They always err in their hearts, and they have not know my ways.
