² Then said he to me, Son of man, these are the men that devise mischief, and give wicked counsel in this city:

¹⁸ Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou didst cast them down into destruction. ¹⁹ How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou wilt despise their image.

²⁷ When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

¹ He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

¹³ Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant. ¹⁴ And he shall break it as the breaking of the potter's vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a piece to take fire from the hearth, or to take water out of the pit.

¹⁰ There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, ¹¹ Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. ¹² For all that do these things are an abomination to the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

¹⁸ Thou shalt not bring the hire of a harlot, or the price of a dog into the house of the LORD thy God for any vow: for even both these are abomination to the LORD thy God.

⁴ Her former husband who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

⁵ The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.

¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:

²² Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.

⁵ A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

⁷ Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.

⁴ A high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.

²⁸ A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

¹³ There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

¹⁵ And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you: yes, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be abased, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

⁹ The show of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe to their soul! for they have rewarded evil to themselves.

¹⁶ Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with extended necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:

³ For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath uttered perverseness. ⁴ None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. ⁵ They hatch cockatrice eggs, and weave the spider's web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper. ⁶ Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands. ⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.

¹ Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. ² By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

⁴⁴ Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do: he was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

⁵ Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves to the elder. Yes, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

¹⁵ For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and lewd men, and murderers, and idolaters, and whoever loveth and maketh a lie.

⁵ And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

¹⁶ For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

⁸ He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.

⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.

¹⁷ And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbor; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD.

¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood.

¹⁶ Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

¹ Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thy hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

¹⁶ If a false witness shall rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong; ¹⁷ Then both the men between whom the controversy is shall stand before the LORD, before the priests, and the judges, who shall be in those days; ¹⁸ And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and behold, if the witness is a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; ¹⁹ Then shall ye do to him, as he had thought to do to his brother: so shalt thou remove the evil from among you. ²⁰ And those who remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.

¹⁰ And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die. ¹¹ And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel had sent to them, and as it was written in the letters which she had sent to them. ¹² They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. ¹³ And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth blasphemed God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. ¹⁴ Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead. ¹⁵ And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead.

¹² Deliver me not over to the will of my enemies: for false witnesses have risen against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.

¹¹ False witnesses arose; they laid to my charge things that I knew not.

¹⁷ He that speaketh truth showeth forth righteousness: but a false witness, deceit.

²⁸ A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

¹⁰ Cast out the scorner, and contention shall end; yes, strife and reproach shall cease.

¹⁸ A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

²⁰ Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no tale-bearer, the strife ceaseth.

¹⁹ For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests and elders, and all the council, sought false testimony against Jesus, to put him to death;

¹³ And set up false witnesses, who said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:

²³ But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they gender contentions.

¹⁴ But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, demoniacal. ¹⁶ For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

¹⁸ And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by them that make peace.

⁹ I wrote to the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the pre-eminence among them, receiveth us not. ¹⁰ Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content with that, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.

¹⁸ If a man shall have a stubborn and rebellious son, who will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, will not hearken to them:

¹⁶ Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother: and all the people shall say, Amen.

⁸ My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: ⁹ For they shalt be an ornament of grace to thy head, and chains about thy neck.

¹ My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. ² Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thy eye. ³ Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thy heart. ⁴ Say to wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:

²² Hearken to thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

¹¹ There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

¹⁶ And it shall be for a token upon thy hand, and for frontlets between thy eyes: for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt.

⁸ And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thy eyes.

³ Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thy heart:

⁶ Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.

²¹ Let them not depart from thy eyes; keep them in the midst of thy heart.

³ Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not on tables of stone, but on fleshly tables of the heart.

⁴ Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.

³ O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me to thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.

⁹ BETH. Wherewith shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed to it, according to thy word.

¹¹ Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.

²⁴ Thy testimonies also are my delight, and my counselors.

⁵⁴ Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.

⁹⁷ MEM. O how I love thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

¹⁴⁸ My eyes anticipated the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.

¹¹ Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:

²³ Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. ²⁴ When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: but thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

¹⁸ After this shall he turn his face to the isles, and shall take many: but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him. ¹⁹ Then he shall turn his face towards the fort of his own land: but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found. ²⁰ Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle. ²¹ And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honor of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

¹⁷ Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thy heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbor, and not suffer sin upon him.

⁸ (19:7)The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

⁹⁸ Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than my enemies: for they are ever with me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.

¹⁰⁵ NUN. Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.

⁵ Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head: for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities.

¹⁸ She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

⁴ He taught me also, and said to me, Let thy heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

¹³ Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.

¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

²⁴ The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.

³¹ The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.

¹⁵ The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

²⁰ To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

⁸ And to this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

¹⁹ We have also a more sure word of prophecy; to which ye do well that ye take heed, as to a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts:

⁵ Remember therefore from whence thou hast fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come to thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of its place, except thou repent.

¹⁶ To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger who flattereth with her words;

³ For the lips of a strange woman drop as a honey-comb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:

⁵ That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.

²⁶ And I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoever pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

⁹ Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thy eyes, with one chain of thy neck.

²⁸ But I say to you, That whoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

¹⁴ But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. ¹⁵ Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

¹⁴ That she called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, See, he hath brought in a Hebrew to us to mock us: he came in to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:

³⁶ And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thy house, shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priest's offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.

¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labors be in the house of a stranger;

²³ Till a dart striketh through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

³ He that loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.

⁸ Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath.

⁸ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you, saith the Lord GOD.

¹⁸ And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the women that sew pillows to all arm-holes, and make kerchiefs upon the head of every stature to hunt souls! Will ye hunt the souls of my people, and will ye save the souls alive that come to you?

⁹ If my heart hath been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbor's door; ¹⁰ Then let my wife grind to another, and let others bow down upon her. ¹¹ For this is a hainous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges. ¹² For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all my increase.

⁴ They are all adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker, who ceaseth from raising after he hath kneaded the dough, until it is leavened. ⁵ In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners. ⁶ For they have made ready their heart like an oven, while they lie in wait: their baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it burneth as a flaming fire. ⁷ They are all hot as an oven, and have devoured their judges; all their kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth to me.

⁵ Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

¹⁸ And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done to me? why didst thou not tell me that she is thy wife? ¹⁹ Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me for a wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.

⁴ But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou also slay a righteous nation? ⁵ Said he not to me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart, and innocence of my hands have I done this. ⁶ And God said to him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore I suffered thee not to touch her. ⁷ Now therefore restore to the man his wife, for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou shalt not restore her, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou and all that are thine.

¹⁰ And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done to us? one of the people might lightly have lain with thy wife, and thou wouldst have brought guiltiness upon us. ¹¹ And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

¹⁰ And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

⁹ Why hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. ¹⁰ Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

²¹ And Ahithophel said to Absalom, Go in to thy father's concubines, which he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel shall hear that thou art abhorred by thy father: then shall the hands of all that are with thee be strong.

⁵ Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.

⁸ They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbor's wife. ⁹ Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

¹¹ And one hath committed abomination with his neighbor's wife; and another hath lewdly defiled his daughter-in-law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father's daughter.

⁵ And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.

¹ Now concerning the things of which ye wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.

¹ If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. ² If a thief shall be found breaking through, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him. ³ If the sun shall have risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him: for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. ⁴ If the theft shall be certainly found in his hand alive, whether an ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.

⁶ And he shall restore the lamb four-fold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

²¹ Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; who have eyes, and see not; who have ears, and hear not:

³¹ Cast away from you all your transgressions, by which ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

¹¹ Lewdness and wine and new wine take away the heart. ¹² My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth to them: for the spirit of lewdness hath caused them to err, and they have gone astray from under their God.

⁹ O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thy help.

²² Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools: ²³ And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping animals. ²⁴ Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves:

⁴ Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but lewd persons and adulterers God will judge.

⁴ Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou it; he went up to my couch.

¹⁹ And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. ²⁰ And she said, the Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he knew not that the LORD had departed from him. ²¹ But the Philistines took him and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison-house.

⁵ Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

²⁶ Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

²⁹ And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the borders of Israel. ³⁰ And it was so, that all that saw it, said, There hath been no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came from the land of Egypt to this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.

⁴ Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

⁶ Set me as a seal upon thy heart, as a seal upon thy arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals of it are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.

²² Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

¹ Now Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honorable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance to Syria: he was also a mighty man in valor, but he was a leper.

³ For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.

¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said to him,

²⁵ Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth.

⁹ And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not.

⁹ Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.
