¹ The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

⁹ And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge: yes, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

¹ The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

²² Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

²⁹ The secret things belong to the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong to us, and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

⁹ Give therefore to thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? ¹⁰ And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. ¹¹ And God said to him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thy enemies: but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; ¹² Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there hath been none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like to thee. ¹³ And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honor: so that there shall not be any among the kings like to thee all thy days, ¹⁴ And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days. ¹⁵ And Solomon awoke; and behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and offered up burnt-offerings, and offered peace-offerings, and made a feast to all his servants. ¹⁶ Then came there two women, that were harlots, to the king, and stood before him. ¹⁷ And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. ¹⁸ And it came to pass the third day after I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save us two in the house. ¹⁹ And this woman's child died in the night; because she overlaid it. ²⁰ And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thy handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. ²¹ And when I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I bore. ²² And the other woman said, No; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spoke before the king. ²³ Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead; and the other saith, No; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living. ²⁴ And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. ²⁵ And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. ²⁶ Then spoke the woman whose the living child was to the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. ²⁷ Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother of it. ²⁸ And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.

²⁹ And God gave Solomon great wisdom and understanding, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea-shore. ³⁰ And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt. ³¹ For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all the surrounding nations. ³² And he spoke three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five. ³³ And he spoke of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even to the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spoke also of beasts, and of fowls, and of creeping animals, and of fishes. ³⁴ And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom.

¹⁵ That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so wilt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.

¹⁹ And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made in it.

¹⁷ Now therefore, if it seemeth good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure-house, which is there at Babylon, whether it is so, that a decree was made by Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.

⁷ Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty to perfection? ⁸ It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?

¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.

⁴ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. ⁵ Who hath laid the measures of it, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? ⁶ Upon what are the foundations of it fastened? or who laid its corner stone; ⁷ When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? ⁸ Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? ⁹ When I made a cloud its garment, and thick darkness a swaddling band for it, ¹⁰ And broke up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors, ¹¹ And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed. ¹² Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the day-spring to know its place; ¹³ That it might take hold of the ends of earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? ¹⁴ It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment. ¹⁵ And from the wicked their light is withheld, and the high arm shall be broken. ¹⁶ Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth? ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been opened to thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shades of death? ¹⁸ Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all. ¹⁹ Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is its place, ²⁰ That thou shouldest take it to its bound, and that thou shouldest know the paths to its house? ²¹ Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great? ²² Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, ²³ Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? ²⁴ By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth? ²⁵ Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder; ²⁶ To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness in which there is no man; ²⁷ To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth? ²⁸ Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of the dew? ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it? ³⁰ The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

⁴ (39:1)Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve? ⁵ (39:2)Canst thou number the months that they fulfill? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth? ⁶ (39:3)They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows. ⁷ (39:4)Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not to them. ⁸ (39:5)Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass? ⁹ (39:6)Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings. ¹⁰ (39:7)He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver. ¹¹ (39:8)The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing. ¹² (39:9)Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib? ¹³ (39:10)Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee? ¹⁴ (39:11)Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labor to him? ¹⁵ (39:12)Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn? ¹⁶ (39:13)Gavest thou the goodly wings to the peacocks? or wings and feathers to the ostrich! ¹⁷ (39:14)Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in the dust, ¹⁸ (39:15)And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them. ¹⁹ (39:16)She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labor is in vain without fear; ²⁰ (39:17)Because God hath withheld wisdom from her, neither hath he imparted to her understanding. ²¹ (39:18)When she lifteth herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider. ²² (39:19)Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder? ²³ (39:20)Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible. ²⁴ (39:21)He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men. ²⁵ (39:22)He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword. ²⁶ (39:23)The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield. ²⁷ (39:24)He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet. ²⁸ (39:25)He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting. ²⁹ (39:26)Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings towards the south? ³⁰ (39:27)Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?

² (40:7)Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou to me.

³ Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that which I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! ³⁴ For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counselor?

²⁹ And God gave Solomon great wisdom and understanding, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea-shore.

¹¹ For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy towards them that fear him.

¹¹ Ask thee a sign from the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the hight above.

⁹ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

³⁹ Nor hight, nor depth, nor any other creature, will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁷ That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though tried with fire, might be found to praise, and honor, and glory, at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

³ The fining-pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.

²⁵ And I will turn my hand upon thee, and thoroughly purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin: ²⁶ And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counselors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city. ²⁷ Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.

¹⁸ Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross: all they are brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are even the dross of silver.

² But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fuller's soap. ³ And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the LORD an offering in righteousness.

²⁰ But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honor, and some to dishonor. ²¹ If a man therefore will cleanse himself from these, he will be a vessel to honor, sanctified and meet for the master's use, and prepared to every good work.

³³ Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace forever from the LORD.

⁴⁶ So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; who went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

¹¹ In which the king granted the Jews who were in every city to assemble, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, both little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey, ¹² Upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, ¹³ The copy of the writing for a commandment, to be given in every province was published to all people, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies. ¹⁴ So the posts that rode upon mules and camels went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment. ⁷ He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight. ⁸ I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all who practice wickedness from the city of the LORD.

¹² It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness.

⁸ A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

²⁸ Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upheld by mercy.

¹⁴ The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.

⁷ Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

⁵ And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousness.

¹¹ And Moses said to God, Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?

²⁰ And as for thy asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? ¹⁸ And David said to Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king? ¹⁹ But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given to Adriel the Meholathite to wife. ²⁰ And Michal Saul's daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. ²¹ And Saul said, I will give her to him, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. ⁸ Now therefore so shalt thou say to my servant David, thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheep-cote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel: ⁹ And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thy enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like to the name of the great men that are in the earth. ¹⁰ Moreover, I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as formerly. ¹¹ And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thy enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee a house. ¹² And when thy days shall be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. ¹³ He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. ¹⁴ I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he shall commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: ¹⁵ But my mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. ¹⁶ And thy house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. ¹⁷ According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak to David.

¹ A Song of degrees of David. LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.

¹⁹ Better it is to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

¹² Also Amaziah said to Amos, O thou seer, go flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: ¹³ But prophesy not again any more at Beth-el: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court. ¹⁴ Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was a herdman, and a gatherer of sycamore fruit: ¹⁵ And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.

⁷ And he put forth a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying to them, ⁸ When thou art invited by any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room, lest a more honorable man than thou be invited by him; ⁹ And he that invited thee and him, shall come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room. ¹⁰ But when thou art invited, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have honor in the presence of them that sit at table with thee. ¹¹ For whoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

⁵ Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves to the elder. Yes, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

¹ After this I looked, and behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard, was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will show thee things which must be hereafter.

¹⁴ And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise. ¹⁵ Then there arose, and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, who pertained to Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David. ¹⁶ And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow's side: so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

²⁶ Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou wilt bid the people return from following their brethren?

⁸ Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face. ⁹ And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son for a wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trod down the thistle. ¹⁰ Thou hast indeed smitten Edom, and thy heart hath lifted thee up: glory of this, and tarry at home: for why shouldst thou meddle to thy hurt, that thou shouldst fall, even thou, and Judah with thee? ¹¹ But Amaziah would not hear. Therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up: and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah. ¹² And Judah was defeated before Israel; and they fled every man to their tents.

¹² There is a way which seemeth right to a man, but the end of it are the ways of death.

¹⁴ The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore withdraw from contention, before it be meddled with.

⁶ A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.

³³ Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.

³¹ The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

²⁵ Agree with thy adversary quickly, while thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

³¹ Or what king going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? ³² Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an embassy, and desireth conditions of peace.

¹³ A tale-bearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

¹⁹ He that goeth about as a tale-bearer revealeth secrets; therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

⁵ And whoever shall receive one such little child in my name, receiveth me. ⁶ But whoever shall cause one of these little ones who believe in me, to sin, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. ⁷ Woe to the world because of offenses! for it must needs be that offenses come; but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh! ⁸ Wherefore, if thy hand or thy foot causeth thee to sin, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into everlasting fire. ⁹ And if thy eye causeth thee to sin, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell-fire. ¹⁰ Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven. ¹¹ For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost. ¹² How think ye? if a man hath a hundred sheep, and one of them is gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and go to the mountains, and seek that which is gone astray? ¹³ And if he findeth it, verily I say to you, he rejoiceth more over that sheep, than over the ninety and nine which went not astray. ¹⁴ Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish. ¹⁵ Moreover, if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. ¹⁶ But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. ¹⁷ And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it to the church: but if he shall neglect to hear the church, let him be to thee as a heathen and a publican.

³⁹ Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good.

²³ A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good it is!

²⁶ Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer.

¹⁰ The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.

⁴ The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth my ear to hear as the learned.

³¹ That this will be no grief to thee, nor offense of heart to my lord, either that thou hast shed blood without cause, or that my lord hath avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thy handmaid. ³² And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who sent thee this day to meet me: ³³ And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, who hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with my own hand. ³⁴ For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, who hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left to Nabal by the morning light any male person.

¹¹ Then came there to him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and ate bread with him in his house: and they condoled with him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an ear-ring of gold.

⁵ Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head: for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities.

⁸ My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: ⁹ For they shalt be an ornament of grace to thy head, and chains about thy neck.

⁸ Reprove not a scorner, lest he shall hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

⁵ A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.

³¹ The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise. ³² He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

¹² The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.

⁵ Open rebuke is better than secret love. ⁶ Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

¹⁷ A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful embassador is health.

²⁵ As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.

⁶ He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.

²⁵ Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labor, and fellow-soldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants. ²⁶ For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because ye had heard that he was sick. ²⁷ For indeed he was sick nigh to death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. ²⁸ I sent him therefore the more speedily, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful. ²⁹ Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation: ³⁰ Because for the work of Christ he was nigh to death, not regarding his life, to supply the want of your service towards me.

¹¹ And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron: and he said, Thus saith the LORD, With these shalt thou push the Syrians, until thou hast consumed them.

⁶ Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

¹¹ For whoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

¹⁰ Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. ¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. ¹² I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. ¹³ And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. ¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

¹³ For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. ¹⁴ And no wonder; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. ¹⁵ Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also are transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. ¹⁶ I say again, Let no man think me a fool; if otherwise, yet as a fool receive me, that I may boast myself a little. ¹⁷ That which I speak, I speak it not according to the Lord, but as it were foolishly, in this confidence of boasting. ¹⁸ Seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory also.

³¹ The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.

¹⁵ Who have forsaken the right way, and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; ¹⁶ But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice, forbad the madness of the prophet. ¹⁷ These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. ¹⁸ For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that had quite escaped from them who live in error. ¹⁹ While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for by whom a man is overcome, by the same is he brought into bondage.

¹² These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about by winds; withered autumnal trees, without fruit, twice dead, plucked out by the roots; ¹³ Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

¹⁶ These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage.

¹⁴ But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers from the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed at them.

And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to himself for a wife. ⁴⁰ And when the servants of David had come to Abigail to Carmel, they spoke to her, saying, David hath sent us to thee, to take thee to him for a wife. ⁴¹ And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thy handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord. ⁴² And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife. ⁴³ David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of them his wives. ⁴⁴ But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.

¹ A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

¹⁴ The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify it.

⁴ If the spirit of the ruler riseth against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offenses.

⁸ And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion: and behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcass of the lion. ⁹ And he took of it in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they ate: but he told them not that he had taken the honey out of the carcass of the lion.

²⁵ And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground. ²⁶ And when the people had come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath. ²⁷ But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in a honey-comb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.

⁸ The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

¹³ My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honey-comb, which is sweet to thy taste: ¹⁴ So shall the knowledge of wisdom be to thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

¹⁵ Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

²² And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give, he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.

³⁴ And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

¹⁸ And be not drunk with wine, in which is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

² And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. ³ And he urged them greatly; and they turned in to him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

¹⁸ And he said to him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-Judah towards the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Beth-lehem-judah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me into his house. ¹⁹ Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing: ²⁰ And the old man said, Peace be with thee; however, let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street. ²¹ So he brought him into his house, and gave provender to the asses: and they washed their feet and ate and drank.

²⁴ Whenever I take my journey into Spain, I will come to you: for I trust to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way thitherward by you, if first I shall be somewhat filled with your company.

¹ Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not from me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin: ² That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shade of Egypt! ³ Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shade of Egypt your confusion.

⁶ Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; on which if a man lean, it will enter his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.

⁶ And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the LORD, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel. ⁷ When they took hold of thee by thy hand, thou didst break, and rend all their shoulder: and when they leaned upon thee, thou didst break, and make all their loins to be at a stand.

¹⁶ At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge.

⁷ They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold. ⁸ They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter. ⁹ They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor. ¹⁰ They cause him to go naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaf from the hungry;

³ For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. ⁴ How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a foreign land?

²⁶ As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.

⁴ A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

⁷ Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou shouldst bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou shouldst cover him; and that thou shouldst not hide thyself from thy own flesh?

¹⁸ (6:17)And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.

¹⁵ Rejoice with them that rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

¹⁵ If a brother or sister is naked, and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ And one of you sayeth to them, Depart in peace, be you warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

¹⁷ Rejoice not when thy enemy falleth, and let not thy heart be glad when he stumbleth:

⁴⁴ But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you, and persecute you;

³³ But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came were he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, ³⁴ And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. ³⁵ And on the morrow, when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said to him, Take care of him: and whatever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. ³⁶ Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbor to him that fell among the robbers?

¹² It may be that the LORD will look on my affliction, and that the LORD will requite me good for his cursing this day.

¹³ And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

¹⁸ Then they also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.

²² Fair weather cometh from the north: with God is terrible majesty.

³ He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbor, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor.

⁵ Whoever privily slandereth his neighbor, him will I cut off: him that hath a high look and a proud heart I will not suffer.

²⁰ Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no tale-bearer, the strife ceaseth.

³⁰ Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventers of evil things, disobedient to parents,

²⁰ For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found by you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults:

¹³ A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

⁹ It is better to dwell in a corner of the house-top, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.

¹⁹ It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.

¹⁵ A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike. ¹⁶ Whoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand which bewrayeth itself.

² Wherefore the people contended with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said to them, Why chide you with me? why do ye tempt the LORD? ³ And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Why is this that thou hast brought us out of Egypt to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

⁶ Behold, I will stand before thee there on the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and water shall come out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

¹⁸ And he was very thirsty, and called on the LORD, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant: and now shall I die by thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised? ¹⁹ But God cleaved a hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water out of it; and when he had drank, his spirit came again, and he revived. Wherefore he called the name of it En-hakkore, which is in Lehi to this day.

³⁷ In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirsteth, let him come to me, and drink.

¹⁵ And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things?

⁵² Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them who showed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers;

³² He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit, than he that taketh a city.
