¹⁰ And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

⁵ And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.

¹ My son, attend to my wisdom, and bow thy ear to my understanding: ² That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.

²⁴ He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

¹⁸ Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

⁶ Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.

⁴ Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

⁴ That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

² For in many things we all offend. If any man offendeth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.

¹ A Psalm of David. Fret not thyself because of evil doers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. ² For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. ³ Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

³ For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm. ⁵ They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they afflicted like other men. ⁶ Therefore pride encompasseth them as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.

¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

³¹ Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.

¹⁶ Better is little with the fear of the LORD, than great treasure and trouble with it.

¹ Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.

¹⁴ Happy is the man that feareth always: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.

⁷ (5:8)If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perversion of judgment and justice in a province, wonder not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there are higher than they.

¹³ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. ¹⁴ For God will bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it is good, or whether it is evil.

³¹ Then had the churches rest throughout all Judea, and Galilee, and Samaria, and were edified: and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, were multiplied.

¹ Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

¹⁷ And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:

¹⁸ (9:17)The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

³⁷ Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

¹⁴ So shall the knowledge of wisdom be to thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

²⁰ For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be extinguished.

¹¹ For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy life-time receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

²¹ What fruit had ye then in those things of which ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. ²² But now being made free from sin, and having become servants to God, ye have your fruit to holiness, and the end everlasting life.

²⁰ According to my earnest expectation and hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also, Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life, or by death.

³⁵ Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward.

¹⁰ Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. ¹¹ I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. ¹² When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. ¹³ Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life. ¹⁴ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. ¹⁵ Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. ¹⁶ For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall. ¹⁷ For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. ¹⁸ But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more to the perfect day. ¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble. ²⁰ My son, attend to my words; incline thy ear to my sayings. ²¹ Let them not depart from thy eyes; keep them in the midst of thy heart. ²² For they are life to those that find them, and health to all their flesh. ²³ Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

⁶ Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

¹² Apply thy heart to instruction, and thy ears to the words of knowledge.

²⁶ My son, give me thy heart, and let thy eyes observe my ways.

¹ Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whoever is deceived by it is not wise.

²⁹ Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? ³⁰ They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. ³¹ Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its color in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. ³² At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. ³³ Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things. ³⁴ And thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. ³⁵ They have stricken me, wilt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

⁷ He who keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.

⁶ Give strong drink to him that is ready to perish, and wine to those that are of heavy hearts. ⁷ Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

¹¹ Woe to them that rise early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflameth them!

²² Woe to them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:

¹³ And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: let us eat and drink; for to-morrow we shall die.

⁴⁹ And shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;

¹³ And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

¹³ Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

¹⁸ And be not drunk with wine, in which is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

³ For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revelings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: ⁴ In which they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

²⁰ And they shall say to the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.

⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? ¹⁰ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as one that traveleth, and thy want as an armed man.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

¹⁷ He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.

³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face of it, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. ³³ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as one that traveleth; and thy want as an armed man.

¹ Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower; who are on the head of the rich valleys of them that are overcome with wine! ² Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand. ³ The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under feet.

⁵ Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

¹¹ But now I have written to you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother is a lewd person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner: with such person no not to eat.

¹⁰ Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

²¹ Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: of which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

³ Ye shall fear every man his mother and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.

¹⁸ If a man shall have a stubborn and rebellious son, who will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, will not hearken to them: ¹⁹ Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out to the elders of his city, and to the gate of his place; ²⁰ And they shall say to the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. ²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he may die: so shalt thou remove evil from among you, and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

¹⁶ Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother: and all the people shall say, Amen.

⁸ My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

²⁰ My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

¹¹ There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.

¹⁷ The eye that mocketh at its father, and despiseth to obey its mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

⁴ For God commanded, saying, Honor thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. ⁵ But ye say, Whoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatever thou mightest be profited by me; ⁶ And honor not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.

¹⁰ For Moses said, Honor thy father and thy mother; and, Whoever curseth father or mother, let him die the death:

²⁶ When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith to his mother, Woman, behold thy son! ²⁷ Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. ² Honor thy father and mother (which is the first commandment with promise)

¹² But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding? ¹³ Man knoweth not the price of it; neither is it found in the land of the living. ¹⁴ The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me. ¹⁵ It cannot be obtained for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price of it. ¹⁶ It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. ¹⁷ The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold. ¹⁸ No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies. ¹⁹ The topaz of Cush shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

⁷² The law of thy mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver.

¹²⁷ Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yes, above fine gold.

² So that thou incline thy ear to wisdom, and apply thy heart to understanding; ³ Yes, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; ⁴ If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

⁵ Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. ⁶ Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. ⁷ Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

¹⁶ How much better is it to get wisdom than gold? and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver?

¹⁶ Why is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?

¹⁵ The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

¹ Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

⁴⁴ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hid in a field; which, when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

⁴⁶ Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

²⁶ For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

²³ Save that the Holy Spirit testifieth in every city, saying, that bonds and afflictions abide me.

⁷ But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. ⁸ Yes doubtless, and I count all things to be loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them to be dung, that I may win Christ,

²⁶ Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt: for he had respect to the recompense of the reward.

¹⁸ I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness may not appear; and anoint thy eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see.

¹¹ And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives to the death.

⁴⁸ And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who hath given one to sit on my throne this day, my eyes even seeing it.

¹ Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying, ² I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and show thyself a man; ³ And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself.

⁹ Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do to him; but his hoary head do thou bring down to the grave with blood.

¹⁵ My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. ¹⁶ Yes, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

¹⁹ And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labor in which I have labored, and in which I have showed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.

⁹ Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.

²⁰ Yes, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.

⁹ And Jabez was more honorable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bore him with sorrow. ¹⁰ And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldst bless me indeed, and enlarge my border, and that thy hand might be with me, and that thou wouldst keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

²⁵ A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.

³¹ And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. ³² He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David. ³³ And he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.

⁴⁰ And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. ⁴¹ And it came to pass, that when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb: and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. ⁴² And she spoke with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. ⁴³ And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? ⁴⁴ For lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. ⁴⁵ And blessed is she that believed that there will be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. ⁴⁶ And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, ⁴⁷ And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.

⁵⁸ And her neighbors and her cousins heard that the Lord had shown great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

²⁷ And it came to pass, as he was speaking these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said to him, Blessed is the womb that bore thee, and the paps which nourished thee. ²⁸ But he said, Yes, rather blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

⁵ And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

⁴³ Whoever is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the loving-kindness of the LORD.

² Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.

⁹ BETH. Wherewith shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed to it, according to thy word. ¹⁰ With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. ¹¹ Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.

¹ My son, forget not my law; but let thy heart keep my commandments;

⁴ He taught me also, and said to me, Let thy heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

²³ Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

²⁵ Let thy eyes look right on, and let thy eyelids look straight before thee. ²⁶ Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. ²⁷ Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

⁹ (14:8)Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir-tree. From me is thy fruit found.

³⁷ He that loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me. ³⁸ And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth me, is not worthy of me.

²⁶ If any man cometh to me, and hateth not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

¹⁴ For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: ¹⁵ And that he died for all, that they who live should not henceforth live to themselves, but to him who died for them, and rose again.

⁵ And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us by the will of God:

¹⁷ That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

¹⁹ We have also a more sure word of prophecy; to which ye do well that ye take heed, as to a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts:

¹⁴ The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred by the LORD shall fall therein.

¹ And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit lewdness with the daughters of Moab.

⁴ And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. ⁵ And the lords of the Philistines came to her, and said to her, Entice him, and see in what his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver. ⁶ And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, in what thy great strength lieth, and with what thou mayest be bound to afflict thee. ⁷ And Samson said to her, If they bind me with seven green withs, that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man. ⁸ Then the lords of the Philistines brought to her seven green withs, which had not been dried, and she bound him with them. ⁹ (Now there were men lying in wait, abiding with her in the chamber.) And she said to him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he broke the withs as a thread of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known. ¹⁰ And Delilah said to Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray thee, with what thou mayest be bound. ¹¹ And he said to her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were used, then shall I be weak, and be as another man. ¹² Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him with them, and said to him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. (And there were liers in wait abiding in the chamber.) And he broke them from off his arms like a thread. ¹³ And Delilah said to Samson, hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: tell me with what thou mayest be bound. And he said to her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web. ¹⁴ And she fastened it with the pin, and said to him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web. ¹⁵ And she said to him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thy heart is not with me? Thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me in what thy great strength lieth. ¹⁶ And it came to pass when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed to death; ¹⁷ That he told her all his heart, and said to her, There hath not come a razor upon my head; for I have been a Nazarite to God from my birth: if I be shaved, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man. ¹⁸ And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath disclosed to me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought money in their hand. ¹⁹ And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. ²⁰ And she said, the Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he knew not that the LORD had departed from him. ²¹ But the Philistines took him and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison-house. ²² However the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaved.

¹⁶ To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger who flattereth with her words; ¹⁷ Who forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God. ¹⁸ For her house inclineth to death, and her paths to the dead. ¹⁹ None that go to her return again, neither do they take hold of the paths of life.

¹² Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)

²² He goeth after her quickly, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; ²³ Till a dart striketh through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life. ²⁴ Now therefore hearken to me, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. ²⁵ Let not thy heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. ²⁶ For she hath cast down many wounded: yes, many strong men have been slain by her. ²⁷ Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

¹⁸ But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

²⁶ And I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoever pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

² Lift up thy eyes to the high places, and see where thou hast not been lain with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy acts of lewdness, and with thy wickedness.

¹¹ Lewdness and wine and new wine take away the heart.

⁸ Neither let us commit lewdness, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

¹ And there came one of the seven angels who had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying to me, Come hither; I will show to thee the judgment of the great harlot that sitteth upon many waters; ² With whom the kings of the earth have committed lewd deeds, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her lewdness.

¹² His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.

³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: Therefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine had left Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.

²⁸ Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have I not commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.

¹⁶ And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him. ¹⁷ And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria. ¹⁸ And he said, Whether they have come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they have come out for war, take them alive. ¹⁹ So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them. ²⁰ And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with the horsemen. ²¹ And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter. ²² And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said to him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.

²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

⁷ But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are overwhelmed with wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment. ⁸ For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.

¹⁰ For while they are folded together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

⁴⁹ And shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; ⁵⁰ The Lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

⁴⁵ But if that servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the men-servants, and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken? ⁴⁶ The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him asunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

²¹ And he drank the wine, and was drunken, and he was uncovered within his tent.

⁸ (75:7)But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

² She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.

⁶ That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

² And it came to pass in an evening, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

¹ Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.

³⁷ Turn away my eyes from beholding vanity; and revive thou me in thy way.

²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in thy heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.

²⁸ But I say to you, That whoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. ²⁹ And if thy right eye shall cause thee to sin, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. ³⁰ And if thy right hand shall cause thee to sin, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

⁴⁷ And if thy eye causeth thee to fall into sin, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes, to be cast into hell-fire.

⁵ And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch forth my hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them. ⁶ And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so did they.

¹² For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods.

¹⁶ He shall suck the poison of asps: the viper's tongue shall slay him.

¹¹ And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

⁸ He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoever breaketh a hedge, a serpent shall bite him.

³ The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under feet.

⁵ They hatch cockatrice eggs, and weave the spider's web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.

³¹ The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

¹⁷ For behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, saith the LORD.

¹⁹ As if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

³ And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they are hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them:

²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy life-time receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. ²⁶ And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they who would pass from hence to you, cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

²¹ What fruit had ye then in those things of which ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

³² Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. ³³ And they made their father drink wine that night: and the first-born went in and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. ³⁴ And it came to pass on the morrow that the first born said to the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father; let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. ³⁵ And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. ³⁶ Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. ³⁷ And the first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites to this day. ³⁸ And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon to this day.

¹² (69:11)I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.

¹² To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;

⁵ Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

⁴ They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

⁵ In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners.

¹⁶ And when he had conducted him down, behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken from the land of the Philistines, and from the land of Judah. ¹⁷ And David smote them from the twilight even to the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, who rode upon camels, and fled.

⁹ And his servant Zimri, captain of half his chariots, conspired against him, as he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza steward of his house in Tirzah.

³⁸ For as in the days that were before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,

² For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. ³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. ⁴ But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. ⁵ Ye are all children of light, and children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. ⁶ Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. ⁷ For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that are drunken, are drunken in the night.

¹⁹ And it should come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he should bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of my heart, to add drunkenness to thirst:

¹¹ As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.

²² Though thou shouldst bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet his foolishness will not depart from him.

¹² Come ye, say they, I will bring wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to-morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.

³ O LORD, are not thy eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God.

³² If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantage is it to me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to-morrow we die. ³³ Be not deceived: Evil communications corrupt good manners. ³⁴ Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.

¹⁹ Who being past feeling have given themselves over to lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

²² But it hath happened to them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and, The sow that was washed, to her wallowing in the mire.
