¹² But I say to you, that Elijah is come already, and they knew him not, but have done to him whatever they pleased: likewise will also the Son of man suffer by them.

³ He is despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. ⁴ Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. ⁵ But he was wounded for our transgression, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. ⁶ All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. ⁷ He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. ⁸ He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off from the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. ⁹ And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death: because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. ¹⁰ Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. ¹¹ He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. ¹² Therefore I will divide to him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul to death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

² Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

⁹ But what went ye out to see? A prophet? yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he concerning whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. ¹¹ Verily, I say to you, among them that are born of women, there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of heaven, is greater than he. ¹² And from the days of John the Baptist, until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. ¹³ For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. ¹⁴ And if ye will receive it, this is Elijah who was to come. ¹⁵ He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

³ For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. ⁴ For John had said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. ⁵ And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. ⁶ But when Herod's birth-day was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. ⁷ Upon which he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask. ⁸ And she, being before instructed by her mother, said, Give me here the head of John the Baptist in a dish. ⁹ And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the sake of the oath, and of them who sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given her. ¹⁰ And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

²¹ From that time forth Jesus began to show to his disciples, that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

²³ And when he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things; and who gave thee this authority? ²⁴ And Jesus answered and said to them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁵ The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or from men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, if we shall say, From heaven; he will say to us, Why then did ye not believe him?

³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

¹⁴ And king Herod heard of him (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist had risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do show forth themselves in him. ¹⁵ Others said, That it is Elijah. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets. ¹⁶ But when Herod heard of him, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he hath risen from the dead. ¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her. ¹⁸ For John had said to Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife. ¹⁹ Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not: ²⁰ For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and observed him: and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. ²¹ And when a convenient day had come, that Herod on his birth-day made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief men of Galilee; ²² And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod, and them that sat with him, the king said to the damsel, Ask of me whatever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. ²³ And he swore to her, Whatever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, to the half of my kingdom. ²⁴ And she went forth, and said to her mother, What shall I ask? and she said, The head of John the Baptist. ²⁵ And she came in forthwith with haste to the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou shouldst give me, immediately, in a dish, the head of John the Baptist. ²⁶ And the king was exceeding sorry: yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes who sat with him, he would not reject her. ²⁷ And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison, ²⁸ And brought his head in a dish, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother.

¹² And he answered and told them, Elijah verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written concerning the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at naught. ¹³ But I say to you, that Elijah is indeed come, and they have done to him whatever they pleased, as it is written concerning him.

³⁰ The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? answer me. ³¹ And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him? ³² But if we shall say, from men; they feared the people: for all men counted John that he was a prophet indeed.

¹⁹ But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, ²⁰ Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

³³ For John the Baptist came neither eating bread, nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a demon.

²¹ And he strictly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing, ²² Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and chief priests, and scribes, and be put to death, and be raised the third day. ²³ And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. ²⁴ For whoever will save his life, shall lose it: but whoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. ²⁵ For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

¹¹ He came to his own, and his own received him not.

³² There is another that testifieth concerning me, and I know that the testimony which he beareth concerning me is true. ³³ Ye sent to John, and he testified to the truth. ³⁴ But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye may be saved. ³⁵ He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. ³⁶ But I have greater testimony than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear testimony concerning me, that the Father hath sent me.

²³ Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

¹⁴ But ye denied the Holy One, and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted to you, ¹⁵ And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; of which we are witnesses.

¹⁰ Be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you sound.

⁵² Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them who showed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers;

²⁴ John having first preached, before his coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. ²⁵ And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose. ²⁶ Men, brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent. ²⁷ For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the words of the prophets which are read every sabbath, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. ²⁸ And though they found no cause of death in him, yet they desired Pilate that he should be put to death.
