⁶ But if we say, ‘From men’, all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.” ⁷ So they answered that they didn’t know where it was from. ⁸ And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

¹⁹ The chief priests and the scribes wanted to lay hands on Him right then, but they were afraid —they knew He had spoken this parable against them.

² And the chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to kill Him, because they feared the people.

⁴¹ And many came to Him and said, “Though John didn’t perform any sign, everything John said about this man was true.”

²⁶ Then the captain went with the operatives and brought them without violence, because they were afraid that the people might stone them.
