¹⁸ For a period of about forty years He put up with them in the wilderness.

³⁶ This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea, and for forty years in the wilderness.

³⁹ to whom our fathers didn’t want to be obedient; rather they rejected him and turned back in their heart to Egypt, ⁴⁰ saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods that will go before us; because this Moses, who led us out of the land of Egypt—we don’t know what has become of him.’ ⁴¹ Well they made a calf in those days and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and started rejoicing in the works of their hands. ⁴² But God turned away and gave them over to serve the army of the heaven, just as it is written in Book of the Prophets: ‘House of Israel, did you offer me slaughtered animals and sacrifices during forty years in the wilderness? ⁴³ Actually you took along the tent of Moloch, and the star of your god, Rephan, the images that you made to worship; so I will relocate you beyond Babylon.’

¹ Now I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea ² —all were baptized into Moses by the cloud and by the sea— ³ and all ate the same spiritual food ⁴ and drank the same spiritual drink; because they kept drinking from a spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that Rock was the Christ. ⁵ For all that, God was not pleased with most of them—their carcasses were scattered around the desert! ⁶ Now these things became examples for us, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. ⁷ And do not become idolaters, just like some of them; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to amuse themselves.” ⁸ And let us not fornicate, just as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand died! ⁹ Neither let us test the Christ, just as also some of them did—and were destroyed by the snakes! ¹⁰ And do not grumble, just as also some of them did—and were executed by the destroyer!

⁷ Therefore—just as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you would hear His voice, ⁸ do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, during the time of the testing in the desert, ⁹ where your fathers tested me, proved me and saw my works for forty years. ¹⁰ In consequence I became very angry with that generation and said, ‘Their heart always leads them astray; they have not known my ways.’

¹⁶ So who were they who, upon hearing, rebelled? Really now, wasn’t it all those who came out of Egypt by Moses? ¹⁷ And with whom was He\up6 [F]\up0 angry for forty years? Wasn’t it with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the desert? ¹⁸ Or to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, if not to those who disobeyed? ¹⁹ So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.
