The work of a man’s hands shall be rewarded to him. ¹⁵ The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who is wise listens to counsel. ¹⁶ A fool shows his annoyance the same day, but one who overlooks an insult is prudent. ¹⁷ He who is truthful testifies honestly, but a false witness lies. ¹⁸ There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals. ¹⁹ Truth’s lips will be established forever, but a lying tongue is only momentary. ²⁰ Deceit is in the heart of those who plot evil, but joy comes to the promoters of peace. ²¹ No mischief shall happen to the righteous, but the wicked shall be filled with evil. ²² Lying lips are an abomination to Yahweh, but those who do the truth are his delight. ²³ A prudent man keeps his knowledge, but the hearts of fools proclaim foolishness. ²⁴ The hands of the diligent ones shall rule, but laziness ends in slave labor. ²⁵ Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad. ²⁶ A righteous person is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. ²⁷ The slothful man doesn’t roast his game, but the possessions of diligent men are prized. ²⁸ In the way of righteousness is life; in its path there is no death.

⁹ Don’t be like the horse, or like the mule, which have no understanding, who are controlled by bit and bridle, or else they will not come near to you.

⁶ A senseless man doesn’t know, neither does a fool understand this:

²⁷ Let me understand the teaching of your precepts! Then I will meditate on your wondrous works.

⁹⁷ MEM How I love your law! It is my meditation all day. ⁹⁸ Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies, for your commandments are always with me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the aged, because I have kept your precepts.

¹⁰ For wisdom will enter into your heart. Knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. ¹¹ Discretion will watch over you. Understanding will keep you,

¹² and say, “How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; ¹³ neither have I obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor turned my ear to those who instructed me!

¹⁷ I love those who love me. Those who seek me diligently will find me.

³² “Now therefore, my sons, listen to me, for blessed are those who keep my ways.

⁷ One who corrects a mocker invites insult. One who reproves a wicked man invites abuse. ⁸ Don’t reprove a scoffer, lest he hate you. Reprove a wise person, and he will love you.

¹⁰ There is stern discipline for one who forsakes the way: whoever hates reproof shall die.

¹ A man who isolates himself pursues selfishness, and defies all sound judgment.

³ The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master’s crib; but Israel doesn’t know. My people don’t consider.”

¹⁰ and with all deception of wickedness for those who are being lost, because they didn’t receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

¹⁵ The nations have sunk down in the pit that they made. In the net which they hid, their own foot is taken.

⁵ It is well with the man who deals graciously and lends. He will maintain his cause in judgment.

³¹ Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.

¹⁸ a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are swift in running to mischief,

³⁵ For whoever finds me, finds life, and will obtain favor from Yahweh.

⁸ There is no man who has power over the spirit to contain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death. There is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver those who practice it.

⁵ The fool will no longer be called noble, nor the scoundrel be highly respected. ⁶ For the fool will speak folly, and his heart will work iniquity, to practice profanity, and to utter error against Yahweh, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and to cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. ⁷ The ways of the scoundrel are evil. He devises wicked plans to destroy the humble with lying words, even when the needy speaks right.

²⁴ For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith, and many people were added to the Lord.

⁷ For one will hardly die for a righteous man. Yet perhaps for a righteous person someone would even dare to die.

³³ Blessed is your discretion, and blessed are you, who have kept me today from blood guiltiness, and from avenging myself with my own hand.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation. ⁴ His children are far from safety. They are crushed in the gate. Neither is there any to deliver them, ⁵ whose harvest the hungry eats up, and take it even out of the thorns. The snare gapes for their substance.

²⁹ He will not be rich, neither will his substance continue, neither will their possessions be extended on the earth.

⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short, the joy of the godless but for a moment? ⁶ Though his height mount up to the heavens, and his head reach to the clouds, ⁷ yet he will perish forever like his own dung. Those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’ ⁸ He will fly away as a dream, and will not be found. Yes, he will be chased away like a vision of the night. ⁹ The eye which saw him will see him no more, neither will his place see him any more.

¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare clothing as the clay; ¹⁷ he may prepare it, but the just will put it on, and the innocent will divide the silver. ¹⁸ He builds his house as the moth, as a booth which the watchman makes.

⁵ he who doesn’t lend out his money for usury, nor take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be shaken.

¹ A Song of Ascents. Those who trust in Yahweh are as Mount Zion, which can’t be moved, but remains forever. ² As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so Yahweh surrounds his people from this time forward and forever more.

²⁵ When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more; but the righteous stand firm forever.

¹⁷ that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

⁷ rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, even as you were taught, abounding in it in thanksgiving.

¹ Every wise woman builds her house, but the foolish one tears it down with her own hands.

³⁰ The life of the body is a heart at peace, but envy rots the bones.

¹³ A foolish son is the calamity of his father. A wife’s quarrels are a continual dripping. ¹⁴ House and riches are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from Yahweh.

⁹ It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop than to share a house with a contentious woman.

¹⁹ It is better to dwell in a desert land, than with a contentious and fretful woman.

¹⁵ A continual dropping on a rainy day and a contentious wife are alike: ¹⁶ restraining her is like restraining the wind, or like grasping oil in his right hand.

¹⁰ Who can find a worthy woman? For her price is far above rubies. ¹¹ The heart of her husband trusts in her. He shall have no lack of gain. ¹² She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. ¹³ She seeks wool and flax, and works eagerly with her hands. ¹⁴ She is like the merchant ships. She brings her bread from afar. ¹⁵ She rises also while it is yet night, gives food to her household, and portions for her servant girls. ¹⁶ She considers a field, and buys it. With the fruit of her hands, she plants a vineyard. ¹⁷ She arms her waist with strength, and makes her arms strong. ¹⁸ She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp doesn’t go out by night. ¹⁹ She lays her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. ²⁰ She opens her arms to the poor; yes, she extends her hands to the needy. ²¹ She is not afraid of the snow for her household; for all her household are clothed with scarlet. ²² She makes for herself carpets of tapestry. Her clothing is fine linen and purple. ²³ Her husband is respected in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land. ²⁴ She makes linen garments and sells them, and delivers sashes to the merchant. ²⁵ Strength and dignity are her clothing. She laughs at the time to come.

¹⁶ I heard, and my body trembled. My lips quivered at the voice. Rottenness enters into my bones, and I tremble in my place, because I must wait quietly for the day of trouble, for the coming up of the people who invade us.

⁷ For a man indeed ought not to have his head covered, because he is the image and glory of God, but the woman is the glory of the man.

¹¹ Nevertheless, neither is the woman independent of the man, nor the man independent of the woman, in the Lord.

² Everyone lies to his neighbor. They speak with flattering lips, and with a double heart. ³ May Yahweh cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that boasts,

² For he flatters himself in his own eyes, too much to detect and hate his sin. ³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit. He has ceased to be wise and to do good. ⁴ He plots iniquity on his bed. He sets himself in a way that is not good. He doesn’t abhor evil.

⁶ If he comes to see me, he speaks falsehood. His heart gathers iniquity to itself. When he goes abroad, he tells it. ⁷ All who hate me whisper together against me. They imagine the worst for me.

¹⁵ I will meditate on your precepts, and consider your ways.

²³ Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts.

¹ For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. Deliver me, Yahweh, from the evil man. Preserve me from the violent man: ² those who devise mischief in their hearts. They continually gather themselves together for war. ³ They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent. Viper’s poison is under their lips. Selah.

²³ The desire of the righteous is only good. The expectation of the wicked is wrath.

⁹ The schemes of folly are sin. The mocker is detested by men.

⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return to Yahweh, and he will have mercy on him, to our God, for he will freely pardon.

¹⁴ Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long will your evil thoughts lodge within you?

³ When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. ⁴ Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born. ⁵ They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is written through the prophet, ⁶ ‘You Bethlehem, land of Judah, are in no way least among the princes of Judah: for out of you shall come a governor, who shall shepherd my people, Israel.’” ⁷ Then Herod secretly called the wise men, and learned from them exactly what time the star appeared. ⁸ He sent them to Bethlehem, and said, “Go and search diligently for the young child. When you have found him, bring me word, so that I also may come and worship him.”

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly angry, and sent out, and killed all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all the surrounding countryside, from two years old and under, according to the exact time which he had learned from the wise men.

⁴ They took counsel together that they might take Jesus by deceit, and kill him.

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each man will get his praise from God.

² But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by the manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

¹ Moreover Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me now choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David tonight. ² I will come on him while he is weary and exhausted, and will make him afraid. All the people who are with him will flee. I will strike the king only, ³ and I will bring back all the people to you. The man whom you seek is as if all returned. All the people shall be in peace.” ⁴ The saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

⁷ Mordecai told him of all that had happened to him, and the exact sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the destruction of the Jews. ⁸ He also gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given out in Susa to destroy them, to show it to Esther, and to declare it to her, and to urge her to go in to the king, to make supplication to him, and to make request before him, for her people. ⁹ Hathach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai. ¹⁰ Then Esther spoke to Hathach, and gave him a message to Mordecai: ¹¹ “All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, know, that whoever, whether man or woman, comes to the king into the inner court without being called, there is one law for him, that he be put to death, except those to whom the king might hold out the golden scepter, that he may live. I have not been called to come in to the king these thirty days.” ¹² They told Esther’s words to Mordecai. ¹³ Then Mordecai asked them to return this answer to Esther: “Don’t think to yourself that you will escape in the king’s house any more than all the Jews. ¹⁴ For if you remain silent now, then relief and deliverance will come to the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Who knows if you haven’t come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

⁴ For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for male and female slaves, I would have held my peace, although the adversary could not have compensated for the king’s loss.” ⁵ Then King Ahasuerus said to Esther the queen, “Who is he, and where is he who dared presume in his heart to do so?” ⁶ Esther said, “An adversary and an enemy, even this wicked Haman!” Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.

¹¹ If they say, “Come with us. Let’s lay in wait for blood. Let’s lurk secretly for the innocent without cause. ¹² Let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down into the pit. ¹³ We’ll find all valuable wealth. We’ll fill our houses with plunder. ¹⁴ You shall cast your lot among us. We’ll all have one purse.” ¹⁵ My son, don’t walk on the path with them. Keep your foot from their path, ¹⁶ for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood. ¹⁷ For the net is spread in vain in the sight of any bird; ¹⁸ but these lay in wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives. ¹⁹ So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.

³ The fool’s talk brings a rod to his back, but the lips of the wise protect them.

⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they hurry to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity. Desolation and destruction are in their paths.

²⁶ For wicked men are found among my people. They watch, as fowlers lie in wait. They set a trap. They catch men.

¹ Misery is mine! Indeed, I am like one who gathers the summer fruits, as gleanings of the vineyard: There is no cluster of grapes to eat. My soul desires to eat the early fig. ² The godly man has perished out of the earth, and there is no one upright among men. They all lie in wait for blood; every man hunts his brother with a net.

¹² When it was day, some of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.

¹⁵ Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”

³ asking a favor against him, that he would summon him to Jerusalem; plotting to kill him on the way.

¹⁶ Your house and your kingdom will be made sure forever before you. Your throne will be established forever.”’”

²⁶ Let your name be magnified forever, saying, ‘Yahweh of Armies is God over Israel; and the house of your servant David will be established before you.’

⁶ In the citadel of Susa, the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men. ⁷ They killed Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha, ⁸ Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha, ⁹ Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha, ¹⁰ the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy, but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder.

¹⁴ The king commanded this to be done. A decree was given out in Susa; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation. ⁴ His children are far from safety. They are crushed in the gate. Neither is there any to deliver them,

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked will fail. They will have no way to flee. Their hope will be the giving up of the spirit.”

¹⁵ There will dwell in his tent that which is none of his. Sulfur will be scattered on his habitation. ¹⁶ His roots will be dried up beneath. His branch will be cut off above. ¹⁷ His memory will perish from the earth. He will have no name in the street. ¹⁸ He will be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He will have neither son nor grandson among his people, nor any remaining where he lived. ²⁰ Those who come after will be astonished at his day, as those who went before were frightened.

¹⁸ He builds his house as the moth, as a booth which the watchman makes. ¹⁹ He lies down rich, but he will not do so again. He opens his eyes, and he is not. ²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters. A storm steals him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind carries him away, and he departs. It sweeps him out of his place. ²² For it hurls at him, and does not spare, as he flees away from his hand. ²³ Men will clap their hands at him, and will hiss him out of his place.

²⁵ Therefore he takes knowledge of their works. He overturns them in the night, so that they are destroyed.

¹⁰ For yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more. Yes, though you look for his place, he isn’t there.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, spreading himself like a green tree in its native soil. ³⁶ But he passed away, and behold, he was not. Yes, I sought him, but he could not be found. ³⁷ Mark the perfect man, and see the upright, for there is a future for the man of peace.

¹⁸ Surely you set them in slippery places. You throw them down to destruction. ¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed! They are completely swept away with terrors.

²¹ Most certainly, the evil man will not be unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered.

¹¹ The house of the wicked will be overthrown, but the tent of the upright will flourish.

²⁵ Yahweh will uproot the house of the proud, but he will keep the widow’s borders intact.

³ Through wisdom a house is built; by understanding it is established; ⁴ by knowledge the rooms are filled with all rare and beautiful treasure.

²⁴ “Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock. ²⁵ The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn’t fall, for it was founded on the rock. ²⁶ Everyone who hears these words of mine, and doesn’t do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. ²⁷ The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”

³⁹ Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Because God has shown you all of this, there is no one so discreet and wise as you.

¹³ Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you; for now Yahweh would have established your kingdom on Israel forever.

¹⁸ Then one of the young men answered, and said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and Yahweh is with him.”

³⁰ Then the princes of the Philistines went out; and as often as they went out, David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed.

¹⁷ Now therefore know and consider what you will do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his house; for he is such a worthless fellow that one can’t speak to him.”

¹⁸ I will clothe his enemies with shame, but on himself, his crown will shine.”

²⁶ I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you,

³⁵ The wise will inherit glory, but shame will be the promotion of fools.

²³ He will die for lack of instruction. In the greatness of his folly, he will go astray.

¹ Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

² Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

⁸ But you have turned away from the path. You have caused many to stumble in the law. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi,” says Yahweh of Armies. ⁹ “Therefore I have also made you contemptible and wicked before all the people, according to the way you have not kept my ways, but have had respect for persons in the law.

⁴ saying, “I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? You see to it.” ⁵ He threw down the pieces of silver in the sanctuary, and departed. He went away and hanged himself.

⁴² The Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the right times? ⁴³ Blessed is that servant whom his lord will find doing so when he comes. ⁴⁴ Truly I tell you, that he will set him over all that he has.

⁸ “His lord commended the dishonest manager because he had done wisely, for the children of this world are, in their own generation, wiser than the children of the light.

²³ Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he didn’t give God the glory. Then he was eaten by worms and died.

¹⁰ According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another builds on it. But let each man be careful how he builds on it. ¹¹ For no one can lay any other foundation than that which has been laid, which is Jesus Christ. ¹² But if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or stubble, ¹³ each man’s work will be revealed. For the Day will declare it, because it is revealed in fire; and the fire itself will test what sort of work each man’s work is. ¹⁴ If any man’s work remains which he built on it, he will receive a reward. ¹⁵ If any man’s work is burned, he will suffer loss, but he himself will be saved, but as through fire.

¹⁸ For it isn’t he who commends himself who is approved, but whom the Lord commends.

⁷ There are some who pretend to be rich, yet have nothing. There are some who pretend to be poor, yet have great wealth.

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

¹³ Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender, and that the flocks and herds with me have their young, and if they overdrive them one day, all the flocks will die. ¹⁴ Please let my lord pass over before his servant, and I will lead on gently, according to the pace of the livestock that are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord to Seir.”

²⁶ Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? ²⁷ Come, and let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh.” His brothers listened to him. ²⁸ Midianites who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. The merchants brought Joseph into Egypt.

²⁸ Yahweh opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?” ²⁹ Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have mocked me, I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would have killed you.” ³⁰ The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, on which you have ridden all your life long until today? Was I ever in the habit of doing so to you?” He said, “No.” ³¹ Then Yahweh opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw Yahweh’s angel standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face. ³² Yahweh’s angel said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out as an adversary, because your way is perverse before me.

⁴ You shall not muzzle the ox when he treads out the grain.

⁷ Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their big toes cut off, scavenged under my table. As I have done, so God has done to me.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

² Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make it with you, that all your right eyes be gouged out. I will make this dishonor all Israel.”

¹¹ The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. So where do you get that living water?

³¹ Therefore the Jews, because it was the Preparation Day, so that the bodies wouldn’t remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special one), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. ³² Therefore the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him;

¹³ For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. ¹⁴ What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him? ¹⁵ And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you tells them, “Go in peace. Be warmed and filled;” yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it?

¹⁷ But whoever has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, then closes his heart of compassion against him, how does God’s love remain in him?

¹⁹ You will eat bread by the sweat of your face until you return to the ground, for you were taken out of it. For you are dust, and you shall return to dust.”

⁴ They gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal Berith, with which Abimelech hired vain and reckless fellows who followed him.

⁴ I have not sat with deceitful men, neither will I go in with hypocrites.

² For you will eat the labor of your hands. You will be happy, and it will be well with you.

¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice you, don’t consent.

¹⁴ Don’t enter into the path of the wicked. Don’t walk in the way of evil men. ¹⁵ Avoid it, and don’t pass by it. Turn from it, and pass on.

³² He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. He who does it destroys his own soul.

⁷ I saw among the simple ones. I discerned among the youths a young man void of understanding,

⁶ Leave your simple ways, and live. Walk in the way of understanding.”

¹³ The foolish woman is loud, undisciplined, and knows nothing.

¹⁶ “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here.” as for him who is void of understanding, she says to him,

²⁰ One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

²³ An abundance of food is in poor people’s fields, but injustice sweeps it away.

⁴ Where no oxen are, the crib is clean, but much increase is by the strength of the ox.

²³ In all hard work there is profit, but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty.

²⁷ There will be plenty of goats’ milk for your food, for your family’s food, and for the nourishment of your servant girls.

¹⁹ One who works his land will have an abundance of food; but one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty.

⁸ Those who regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

²⁸ Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, producing with his hands something that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need.

¹¹ and that you make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, even as we instructed you; ¹² that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and may have need of nothing.

⁸ neither did we eat bread from anyone’s hand without paying for it, but in labor and travail worked night and day, that we might not burden any of you,

¹⁰ For there are also many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, ¹¹ whose mouths must be stopped: men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain’s sake.

³ He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that produces its fruit in its season, whose leaf also does not wither. Whatever he does shall prosper.

⁹ He lurks in secret as a lion in his ambush. He lies in wait to catch the helpless. He catches the helpless when he draws him in his net.

¹⁵ The rich man’s wealth is his strong city. The destruction of the poor is their poverty.

⁵ A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet. ⁶ An evil man is snared by his sin, but the righteous can sing and be glad.

⁶ In days to come, Jacob will take root. Israel will blossom and bud. They will fill the surface of the world with fruit.

³¹ The remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah will again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

²⁶ For wicked men are found among my people. They watch, as fowlers lie in wait. They set a trap. They catch men. ²⁷ As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit. Therefore they have become great, and grew rich. ²⁸ They have grown fat. They shine; yes, they excel in deeds of wickedness. They don’t plead the cause, the cause of the fatherless, that they may prosper; and they don’t defend the rights of the needy.

⁷ “Blessed is the man who trusts in Yahweh, and whose confidence is in Yahweh. ⁸ For he will be as a tree planted by the waters, who spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes, but its leaf will be green, and will not be concerned in the year of drought. It won’t cease from yielding fruit.

² The godly man has perished out of the earth, and there is no one upright among men. They all lie in wait for blood; every man hunts his brother with a net.

¹⁵ He takes up all of them with the hook. He catches them in his net, and gathers them in his dragnet. Therefore he rejoices and is glad. ¹⁶ Therefore he sacrifices to his net, and burns incense to his dragnet, because by them his life is luxurious, and his food is good. ¹⁷ Will he therefore continually empty his net, and kill the nations without mercy?

¹³ Those on the rock are they who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; but these have no root, who believe for a while, then fall away in time of temptation. ¹⁴ That which fell among the thorns, these are those who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. ¹⁵ Those in the good ground, these are those who with an honest and good heart, having heard the word, hold it tightly, and produce fruit with perseverance.

⁵ I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

¹⁶ You didn’t choose me, but I chose you and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatever you will ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

²² But now, being made free from sin and having become servants of God, you have your fruit of sanctification and the result of eternal life.

¹⁶ the angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads, and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac. Let them grow into a multitude upon the earth.”

⁹ David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said to them, “As Yahweh lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

²³ Then king Solomon swore by Yahweh, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life.

⁶ You will destroy those who speak lies. Yahweh abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.

⁸ Their own tongues shall ruin them. All who see them will shake their heads.

² you are trapped by the words of your mouth; you are ensnared with the words of your mouth.

⁸ A righteous person is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked takes his place.

² The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of fools gush out folly.

⁶ A fool’s lips come into strife, and his mouth invites beatings. ⁷ A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are a snare to his soul.

²³ Whoever guards his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles.

¹⁸ It is good that you should take hold of this. Yes, also don’t withdraw your hand from that; for he who fears God will come out of them all.

²⁴ The king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions mauled them, and broke all their bones in pieces, before they came to the bottom of the den.

²⁵ All the people answered, “May his blood be on us, and on our children!”

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ³⁶ Even as it is written, “For your sake we are killed all day long. We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” ³⁷ No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

⁹ the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,

⁵ My soul shall be satisfied as with the richest food. My mouth shall praise you with joyful lips,

² By the fruit of his lips, a man enjoys good things, but the unfaithful crave violence.

²³ Joy comes to a man with the reply of his mouth. How good is a word at the right time!

²⁰ A man’s stomach is filled with the fruit of his mouth. With the harvest of his lips he is satisfied. ²¹ Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit.

¹⁰ Tell the righteous “Good!” For they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. ¹¹ Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them; for the deeds of his hands will be paid back to him.

⁴¹ He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward. He who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward. ⁴² Whoever gives one of these little ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, most certainly I tell you he will in no way lose his reward.”

²⁷ For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds.

⁶ Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay affliction to those who afflict you, ⁷ and to give relief to you who are afflicted with us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire,

² For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty,

²⁶ considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked to the reward.

⁵ that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel:

⁷ Don’t be wise in your own eyes. Fear Yahweh, and depart from evil.

⁹ Instruct a wise person, and he will be still wiser. Teach a righteous person, and he will increase in learning.

¹² There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

¹⁶ A wise man fears and shuns evil, but the fool is hot headed and reckless.

² All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but Yahweh weighs the motives.

²⁵ There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

²⁰ Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter end.

² Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but Yahweh weighs the hearts.

¹² Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer with discretion.

¹¹ The rich man is wise in his own eyes; but the poor who has understanding sees through him.

¹² There is a generation that is pure in their own eyes, yet are not washed from their filthiness.

¹³ Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who doesn’t know how to receive admonition any more.

¹⁵ Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? If I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.” ¹⁶ So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, “As Yahweh lives, who made us this soul, I will not put you to death, neither will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life.” ¹⁷ Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Yahweh, the God of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you will go out to the king of Babylon’s princes, then your soul will live, and this city will not be burned with fire. You will live, along with your house. ¹⁸ But if you will not go out to the king of Babylon’s princes, then this city will be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they will burn it with fire, and you won’t escape out of their hand.’” ¹⁹ Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have defected to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.” ²⁰ But Jeremiah said, “They won’t deliver you. Obey, I beg you, Yahweh’s voice, in that which I speak to you; so it will be well with you, and your soul will live. ²¹ But if you refuse to go out, this is the word that Yahweh has shown me: ²² ‘Behold, all the women who are left in the king of Judah’s house will be brought out to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women will say, “Your familiar friends have turned on you, and have prevailed over you. Your feet are sunk in the mire, they have turned away from you.” ²³ They will bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans. You won’t escape out of their hand, but will be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon. You will cause this city to be burned with fire.’” ²⁴ Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no man know of these words, and you won’t die. ²⁵ But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you, and tell you, ‘Declare to us now what you have said to the king; don’t hide it from us, and we will not put you to death; also tell us what the king said to you;’ ²⁶ then you shall tell them, ‘I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there.’” ²⁷ Then all the princes came to Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they stopped speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived. ²⁸ So Jeremiah stayed in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed to himself like this: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of men, extortionists, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

³ For if a man thinks himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

³⁰ Then Saul’s anger burned against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse rebellious woman, don’t I know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness? ³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, you will not be established, nor will your kingdom. Therefore now send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die!” ³² Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?” ³³ Saul cast his spear at him to strike him. By this Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death. ³⁴ So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had treated him shamefully.

¹ Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. ² Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I don’t make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time!”

¹² Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all wrongs.

³³ Wisdom rests in the heart of one who has understanding, and is even made known in the inward part of fools.

²² Understanding is a fountain of life to one who has it, but the punishment of fools is their folly.

⁹ He who covers an offense promotes love; but he who repeats a matter separates best friends.

²⁸ Like a city that is broken down and without walls is a man whose spirit is without restraint.

¹¹ A fool vents all of his anger, but a wise man brings himself under control.

¹⁹ So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;

¹⁴ Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, “Who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, captain of your body guard, and honored in your house? ¹⁵ Have I today begun to inquire of God for him? Be it far from me! Don’t let the king impute anything to his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for your servant knows nothing of all this, less or more.”

¹⁹ a false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.

⁵ A truthful witness will not lie, but a false witness pours out lies.

²⁵ A truthful witness saves souls, but a false witness is deceitful.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished. He who pours out lies shall not go free.

²⁸ A corrupt witness mocks justice, and the mouth of the wicked gulps down iniquity.

²⁸ A false witness will perish. A man who listens speaks to eternity.

²⁸ Don’t be a witness against your neighbor without cause. Don’t deceive with your lips.

¹⁹ For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests, the elders, and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus, that they might put him to death;

¹³ and set up false witnesses who said, “This man never stops speaking blasphemous words against this holy place and the law.

¹⁶ having a good conscience. Thus, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be disappointed who curse your good way of life in Christ.

² Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

⁴ My soul is among lions. I lie among those who are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁷ Behold, they spew with their mouth. Swords are in their lips, “For”, they say, “who hears us?”

³ who sharpen their tongue like a sword, and aim their arrows, deadly words,

²² For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body.

²⁰ The tongue of the righteous is like choice silver. The heart of the wicked is of little worth. ²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many, but the foolish die for lack of understanding.

¹⁷ A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy envoy gains healing.

⁴ A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but deceit in it crushes the spirit.

⁷ The lips of the wise spread knowledge; not so with the heart of fools.

²⁴ Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

¹⁸ A man who gives false testimony against his neighbor is like a club, a sword, or a sharp arrow.

³³ “Those who are wise among the people will instruct many; yet they will fall by the sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder, many days.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna. ⁷ For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and sea creature, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind; ⁸ but nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

¹⁶ He had seven stars in his right hand. Out of his mouth proceeded a sharp two-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining at its brightest.

² in the middle of its street. On this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short, the joy of the godless but for a moment?

⁴ You love all devouring words, you deceitful tongue. ⁵ God will likewise destroy you forever. He will take you up, and pluck you out of your tent, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished. He who utters lies shall perish.

⁴ Don’t you be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying: Yahweh of Armies says, ‘Return now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings;’ but they didn’t hear, nor listen to me, says Yahweh. ⁵ Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever? ⁶ But my words and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, didn’t they overtake your fathers? “Then they repented and said, ‘Just as Yahweh of Armies determined to do to us, according to our ways, and according to our practices, so he has dealt with us.’”

³⁵ Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

³ But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back part of the price of the land? ⁴ While you kept it, didn’t it remain your own? After it was sold, wasn’t it in your power? How is it that you have conceived this thing in your heart? You haven’t lied to men, but to God.” ⁵ Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and died. Great fear came on all who heard these things. ⁶ The young men arose and wrapped him up, and they carried him out and buried him. ⁷ About three hours later, his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in. ⁸ Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” She said, “Yes, for so much.” ⁹ But Peter asked her, “How is it that you have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” ¹⁰ She fell down immediately at his feet and died. The young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her by her husband.

²⁴ A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but he harbors evil in his heart. ²⁵ When his speech is charming, don’t believe him, for there are seven abominations in his heart. ²⁶ His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.

⁶ For a child is born to us. A son is given to us; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. ⁷ Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, on David’s throne, and on his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from that time on, even forever. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.

¹⁶ As for me, I have not hurried from being a shepherd after you. I haven’t desired the woeful day. You know. That which came out of my lips was before your face.

¹³ even he shall build Yahweh’s temple; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule on his throne; and he shall be a priest on his throne; and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

⁹ Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.

²¹ For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts, ²² covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.

¹⁴ When they had come, they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you are honest, and don’t defer to anyone; for you aren’t partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? ¹⁵ Shall we give, or shall we not give?” But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, “Why do you test me? Bring me a denarius, that I may see it.” ¹⁶ They brought it. He said to them, “Whose is this image and inscription?” They said to him, “Caesar’s.” ¹⁷ Jesus answered them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” They marveled greatly at him.

²⁹ being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, malice; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil habits, secret slanderers,

¹⁴ Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord,

⁸ Finally, all of you be like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, courteous, ⁹ not rendering evil for evil, or insult for insult; but instead blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. ¹⁰ For, “He who would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit. ¹¹ Let him turn away from evil and do good. Let him seek peace and pursue it. ¹² For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears open to their prayer; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” ¹³ Now who will harm you if you become imitators of that which is good?

¹⁰ no evil shall happen to you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.

¹⁴ The unfaithful will be repaid for his own ways; likewise a good man will be rewarded for his ways.

¹² “Therefore you shall speak to them this word: ‘Yahweh, the God of Israel says, “Every container should be filled with wine.”’ They will tell you, ‘Do we not certainly know that every container should be filled with wine?’ ¹³ Then tell them, ‘Yahweh says, “Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness. ¹⁴ I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together,” says Yahweh: “I will not pity, spare, or have compassion, that I should not destroy them.”’”

¹⁶ You are filled with shame, and not glory. You will also drink, and be exposed! The cup of Yahweh’s right hand will come around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory.

²⁸ We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose.

²² whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come. All are yours, ²³ and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.

¹⁷ For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory,

¹³ Now who will harm you if you become imitators of that which is good?

⁶ Return to her just as she returned, and repay her double as she did, and according to her works. In the cup which she mixed, mix to her double.

¹⁶ There are six things which Yahweh hates; yes, seven which are an abomination to him: ¹⁷ arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,

¹ A false balance is an abomination to Yahweh, but accurate weights are his delight.

²⁰ Those who are perverse in heart are an abomination to Yahweh, but those whose ways are blameless are his delight.

⁸ The sacrifice made by the wicked is an abomination to Yahweh, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

¹⁵ The elder and the honorable man is the head, and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail.

²⁴ But let him who glories glory in this, that he has understanding, and knows me, that I am Yahweh who exercises loving kindness, justice, and righteousness in the earth, for I delight in these things,” says Yahweh.

¹⁹ You have profaned me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to kill the souls who should not die, and to save the souls alive who should not live, by your lying to my people who listen to lies.’

²² Because with lies you have grieved the heart of the righteous, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, and be saved alive.

⁸ But for the cowardly, unbelieving, sinners, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their part is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

¹⁵ Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

¹⁴ Wise men lay up knowledge, but the mouth of the foolish is near ruin.

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there is no lack of disobedience, but he who restrains his lips does wisely.

¹³ One who brings gossip betrays a confidence, but one who is of a trustworthy spirit is one who keeps a secret.

¹⁶ Every prudent man acts from knowledge, but a fool exposes folly.

³ Yes also when the fool walks by the way, his understanding fails him, and he says to everyone that he is a fool.

¹² The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but a fool is swallowed by his own lips. ¹³ The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is mischievous madness. ¹⁴ A fool also multiplies words. Man doesn’t know what will be; and that which will be after him, who can tell him?

¹⁵ He saw a resting place, that it was good, the land, that it was pleasant. He bows his shoulder to the burden, and becomes a servant doing forced labor.

²¹ their children who were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel were not able utterly to destroy, of them Solomon raised a levy of bondservants to this day.

²⁸ The man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor; and Solomon saw the young man that he was industrious, and he put him in charge of all the labor of the house of Joseph.

²⁰ When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israel. There was no one who followed David’s house, except for the tribe of Judah only.

⁴ He becomes poor who works with a lazy hand, but the hand of the diligent brings wealth.

²⁷ The slothful man doesn’t roast his game, but the possessions of diligent men are prized.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing, but the desire of the diligent shall be fully satisfied.

² A servant who deals wisely will rule over a son who causes shame, and shall have a part in the inheritance among the brothers.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep. The idle soul shall suffer hunger.

²⁵ The desire of the sluggard kills him, for his hands refuse to labor. ²⁶ There are those who covet greedily all day long; but the righteous give and don’t withhold.

¹³ The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside! I will be killed in the streets!”

²⁹ Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve kings. He won’t serve obscure men.

³⁰ I went by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man void of understanding: ³¹ Behold, it was all grown over with thorns. Its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered well. I saw, and received instruction: ³³ a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep, ³⁴ so your poverty will come as a robber and your want as an armed man.

¹³ The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road! A fierce lion roams the streets!” ¹⁴ As the door turns on its hinges, so does the sluggard on his bed. ¹⁵ The sluggard buries his hand in the dish. He is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth. ¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer with discretion.

¹ In the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, when wine was before him, I picked up the wine, and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad before in his presence. ² The king said to me, “Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing else but sorrow of heart.” Then I was very much afraid.

⁶ I am in pain and bowed down greatly. I go mourning all day long.

¹¹ Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.

¹⁸ There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.

¹⁰ The heart knows its own bitterness and joy; he will not share these with a stranger.

¹³ A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but an aching heart breaks the spirit.

¹⁵ All the days of the afflicted are wretched, but one who has a cheerful heart enjoys a continual feast.

²² A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

¹⁴ A man’s spirit will sustain him in sickness, but a crushed spirit, who can bear?

¹¹ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.

⁹ Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart; so does earnest counsel from a man’s friend.

⁴ The Lord Yahweh has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with words him who is weary. He awakens morning by morning, he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.

¹³ Yahweh answered the angel who talked with me with kind and comforting words.

³³ He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be greatly troubled and distressed. ³⁴ He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch.”

⁴ For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears, not that you should be made to grieve, but that you might know the love that I have so abundantly for you. ⁵ But if any has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow, not to me, but in part (that I not press too heavily) to you all. ⁶ This punishment which was inflicted by the many is sufficient for such a one; ⁷ so that on the contrary you should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his excessive sorrow.

³ As for the saints who are in the earth, they are the excellent ones in whom is all my delight.

¹² At the brightness before him his thick clouds passed, hailstones and coals of fire. ¹³ Yahweh also thundered in the sky. The Most High uttered his voice: hailstones and coals of fire.

¹³ An evil man is trapped by sinfulness of lips, but the righteous shall come out of trouble.

²⁷ He who spares his words has knowledge. He who is even tempered is a man of understanding.

⁴⁶ For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same? ⁴⁷ If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same? ⁴⁸ Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

³² If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. ³³ If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. ³⁴ If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive back as much. ³⁵ But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil. ³⁶ “Therefore be merciful, even as your Father is also merciful.

¹³ Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. ¹⁴ But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed.

¹⁸ Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all respect: not only to the good and gentle, but also to the wicked. ¹⁹ For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God. ²⁰ For what glory is it if, when you sin, you patiently endure beating? But if, when you do well, you patiently endure suffering, this is commendable with God. ²¹ For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps,

¹⁸ For, uttering great swelling words of emptiness, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by licentiousness, those who are indeed escaping from those who live in error; ¹⁹ promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for a man is brought into bondage by whoever overcomes him. ²⁰ For if, after they have escaped the defilement of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in it and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. ²¹ For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. ²² But it has happened to them according to the true proverb, “The dog turns to his own vomit again,” and “the sow that has washed to wallowing in the mire.”

²⁶ These things I have written to you concerning those who would lead you astray.

⁹ The great dragon was thrown down, the old serpent, he who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

¹⁴ He deceives my own people who dwell on the earth because of the signs he was granted to do in front of the beast, saying to those who dwell on the earth that they should make an image to the beast who had the sword wound and lived.

¹⁶ Better is a little that the righteous has, than the abundance of many wicked.

¹⁶ Better is little, with the fear of Yahweh, than great treasure with trouble.

⁸ Better is a little with righteousness, than great revenues with injustice.

² put a knife to your throat, if you are a man given to appetite.

¹⁵ The sluggard buries his hand in the dish. He is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.

¹⁵ Behold, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and evil.

¹¹ For by me your days will be multiplied. The years of your life will be increased.

¹⁶ The labor of the righteous leads to life. The increase of the wicked leads to sin.

¹⁹ He who is truly righteous gets life. He who pursues evil gets death.

⁹ has walked in my statutes, and has kept my ordinances, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live,” says the Lord Yahweh.

²⁰ The soul who sins, he shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him. ²¹ “But if the wicked turns from all his sins that he has committed, and keeps all my statutes, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live. He shall not die. ²² None of his transgressions that he has committed will be remembered against him. In his righteousness that he has done, he shall live. ²³ Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked?” says the Lord Yahweh; “and not rather that he should return from his way, and live? ²⁴ “But when the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, should he live? None of his righteous deeds that he has done will be remembered. In his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned, in them he shall die.

²¹ that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

²² But now, being made free from sin and having become servants of God, you have your fruit of sanctification and the result of eternal life. ²³ For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

¹¹ For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, ¹² instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age;

²⁹ If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

⁷ Little children, let no one lead you astray. He who does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

¹¹ Beloved, don’t imitate that which is evil, but that which is good. He who does good is of God. He who does evil hasn’t seen God.
