¹³ For now I should have lain down and been quiet. I should have slept, then I would have been at rest,

⁸ The eye of him who sees me will see me no more. Your eyes will be on me, but I will not be. ⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he who goes down to Sheol will come up no more. ¹⁰ He will return no more to his house, neither will his place know him any more.

²¹ Why do you not pardon my disobedience, and take away my iniquity? For now will I lie down in the dust. You will seek me diligently, but I will not be.”

²² the land dark as midnight, of the shadow of death, without any order, where the light is as midnight.’”

¹⁰ But man dies, and is laid low. Yes, man gives up the spirit, and where is he? ¹¹ As the waters fail from the sea, and the river wastes and dries up, ¹² so man lies down and doesn’t rise. Until the heavens are no more, they will not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep.

¹³ If I look for Sheol as my house, if I have spread my couch in the darkness,

²⁷ whom I, even I, will see on my side. My eyes will see, and not as a stranger. “My heart is consumed within me.

¹³ They spend their days in prosperity. In an instant they go down to Sheol.

²³ One dies in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.

³ If a man fathers a hundred children, and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not filled with good, and moreover he has no burial; I say, that a stillborn child is better than he: ⁴ for it comes in vanity, and departs in darkness, and its name is covered with darkness. ⁵ Moreover it has not seen the sun nor known it. This has rest rather than the other.

¹⁰ Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor plan, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, where you are going.
