²³ He went up from there to Bethel. As he was going up by the way, some youths came out of the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldy! Go up, you baldy!”

¹⁵ But in my adversity, they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together. The attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I didn’t know it. They tore at me, and didn’t cease. ¹⁶ Like the profane mockers in feasts, they gnashed their teeth at me.

⁷ The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

²² “How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

⁶ For the fool will speak folly, and his heart will work iniquity, to practice profanity, and to utter error against Yahweh, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and to cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.

¹⁸ The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough, to make cakes to the queen of the sky, and to pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

²⁴ She went out, and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” She said, “The head of John the Baptizer.”

⁶ “But he has made me a byword of the people. They spit in my face.

¹⁴ You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

¹⁵ I am very angry with the nations that are at ease; for I was but a little displeased, but they added to the calamity.”

⁷ now therefore, behold, the Lord brings upon them the mighty flood waters of the River: the king of Assyria and all his glory. It will come up over all its channels, and go over all its banks. ⁸ It will sweep onward into Judah. It will overflow and pass through. It will reach even to the neck. The stretching out of its wings will fill the width of your land, Immanuel.

²⁵ For the thing which I fear comes on me, That which I am afraid of comes to me.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me. My spirit drinks up their poison. The terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he who goes down to Sheol will come up no more.

¹⁴ then you scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions:

²⁷ If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad face, and cheer up;’ ²⁸ I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that you will not hold me innocent.

¹⁶ If my head is held high, you hunt me like a lion. Again you show yourself powerful to me.

²³ For calamity from God is a terror to me. Because of his majesty, I can do nothing.

⁴ My heart is severely pained within me. The terrors of death have fallen on me. ⁵ Fearfulness and trembling have come on me. Horror has overwhelmed me.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up. While I suffer your terrors, I am distracted.

⁴⁴ You have covered yourself with a cloud, so that no prayer can pass through.

²³ But he answered her not a word. His disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away; for she cries after us.”

⁹ even that it would please God to crush me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

²⁰ If I have sinned, what do I do to you, you watcher of men? Why have you set me as a mark for you, so that I am a burden to myself? ²¹ Why do you not pardon my disobedience, and take away my iniquity? For now will I lie down in the dust. You will seek me diligently, but I will not be.”

³ Is it good to you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and smile on the counsel of the wicked?

¹⁴ if I sin, then you mark me. You will not acquit me from my iniquity. ¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe to me. If I am righteous, I still will not lift up my head, being filled with disgrace, and conscious of my affliction. ¹⁶ If my head is held high, you hunt me like a lion. Again you show yourself powerful to me. ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation on me. Changes and warfare are with me.

²⁵ Will you harass a driven leaf? Will you pursue the dry stubble? ²⁶ For you write bitter things against me, and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth: ²⁷ You also put my feet in the stocks, and mark all my paths. You set a bound to the soles of my feet, ²⁸ though I am decaying like a rotten thing, like a garment that is moth-eaten.

⁹ He has torn me in his wrath and persecuted me. He has gnashed on me with his teeth. My adversary sharpens his eyes on me. ¹⁰ They have gaped on me with their mouth. They have struck me on the cheek reproachfully. They gather themselves together against me. ¹¹ God delivers me to the ungodly, and casts me into the hands of the wicked. ¹² I was at ease, and he broke me apart. Yes, he has taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces. He has also set me up for his target. ¹³ His archers surround me. He splits my kidneys apart, and does not spare. He pours out my bile on the ground. ¹⁴ He breaks me with breach on breach. He runs at me like a giant.

⁶ know now that God has subverted me, and has surrounded me with his net. ⁷ “Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard. I cry for help, but there is no justice. ⁸ He has walled up my way so that I can’t pass, and has set darkness in my paths. ⁹ He has stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head.

²² Why do you persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?

⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No, but he would listen to me.

⁷ “Will the Lord reject us forever? Will he be favorable no more? ⁸ Has his loving kindness vanished forever? Does his promise fail for generations? ⁹ Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he, in anger, withheld his compassion?” Selah.

¹³ You have a mighty arm. Your hand is strong, and your right hand is exalted.

¹⁴ All your lovers have forgotten you. They don’t seek you. For I have wounded you with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the greatness of your iniquity, because your sins were increased.

⁶ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time,

¹⁷ For he breaks me with a storm, and multiplies my wounds without cause.

¹⁸ How often is it that they are as stubble before the wind, as chaff that the storm carries away?

²¹ The east wind carries him away, and he departs. It sweeps him out of his place.

⁴ The wicked are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.

¹⁰ He rode on a cherub, and flew. Yes, he soared on the wings of the wind.

³ He lays the beams of his rooms in the waters. He makes the clouds his chariot. He walks on the wings of the wind.

¹³ The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters: but he will rebuke them, and they will flee far off, and will be chased like the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like the whirling dust before the storm.

¹¹ At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, “A hot wind from the bare heights in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to winnow, nor to cleanse; ¹² a full wind from these will come for me. Now I will also utter judgments against them.”

² A third part you shall burn in the fire in the middle of the city, when the days of the siege are fulfilled. You shall take a third part, and strike with the sword around it. A third part you shall scatter to the wind, and I will draw out a sword after them.

¹⁹ The wind has wrapped her up in its wings; and they shall be disappointed because of their sacrifices.

¹⁹ You will eat bread by the sweat of your face until you return to the ground, for you were taken out of it. For you are dust, and you shall return to dust.”

¹⁴ For we must die, and are like water spilled on the ground, which can’t be gathered up again; neither does God take away life, but devises means, that he who is banished not be an outcast from him.

¹⁹ The small and the great are there. The servant is free from his master.

²² “It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked.

⁸ “‘Your hands have framed me and fashioned me altogether, yet you destroy me.

⁵ Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his bounds that he can’t pass;

³³ The clods of the valley will be sweet to him. All men will draw after him, as there were innumerable before him.

⁸ There is no man who has power over the spirit to contain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death. There is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver those who practice it.

⁵ For the living know that they will die, but the dead don’t know anything, neither do they have any more a reward; for their memory is forgotten.

⁵ yes, they shall be afraid of heights, and terrors will be on the way; and the almond tree shall blossom, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail; because man goes to his everlasting home, and the mourners go about the streets: ⁶ before the silver cord is severed, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the spring, or the wheel broken at the cistern, ⁷ and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

²⁷ Inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment,

³¹ “So let all your enemies perish, Yahweh, but let those who love him be as the sun when it rises in its strength.” Then the land had rest forty years.

²⁵ Don’t let them say in their heart, “Aha! That’s the way we want it!” Don’t let them say, “We have swallowed him up!”

⁴ They turn the needy out of the way. The poor of the earth all hide themselves.

¹⁶ “If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail, ¹⁷ or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it ¹⁸ (no, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, I have guided her from my mother’s womb); ¹⁹ if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering; ²⁰ if his heart hasn’t blessed me, if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece; ²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate,

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth. I afflicted my soul with fasting. My prayer returned into my own bosom. ¹⁴ I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother. I bowed down mourning, as one who mourns his mother.

²¹ He who despises his neighbor sins, but he who has pity on the poor is blessed.

³¹ He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him.

⁵ Whoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker. He who is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

¹⁷ He who has pity on the poor lends to Yahweh; he will reward him.

⁸ He who increases his wealth by excessive interest gathers it for one who has pity on the poor.

⁷ Isn’t it to distribute your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh? ⁸ Then your light will break out as the morning, and your healing will appear quickly; then your righteousness shall go before you, and Yahweh’s glory will be your rear guard.

¹⁷ But if you will not hear it, my soul will weep in secret for your pride. My eye will weep bitterly, and run down with tears, because Yahweh’s flock has been taken captive.

²⁰ Should evil be recompensed for good? For they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them.

²⁷ Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your tranquility.”

⁴¹ When he came near, he saw the city and wept over it,

³⁵ Jesus wept.

¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

⁹ As it is written, “He has scattered abroad. He has given to the poor. His righteousness remains forever.”

²⁵ For the thing which I fear comes on me, That which I am afraid of comes to me. ²⁶ I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither do I have rest; but trouble comes.”

⁶ The light will be dark in his tent. His lamp above him will be put out.

¹⁸ He will be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

⁸ He has walled up my way so that I can’t pass, and has set darkness in my paths.

¹⁷ Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither did he cover the thick darkness from my face.

¹⁸ Then I said, ‘I will die in my own house, I will count my days as the sand.

¹¹ Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

¹⁰ Who among you fears Yahweh and obeys the voice of his servant? He who walks in darkness and has no light, let him trust in Yahweh’s name, and rely on his God.

¹⁵ We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!

¹⁸ Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? Will you indeed be to me as a deceitful brook, like waters that fail?

¹² For the inhabitant of Maroth waits anxiously for good, because evil has come down from Yahweh to the gate of Jerusalem.

⁴ Our fathers trusted in you. They trusted, and you delivered them.

¹⁹ My anguish, my anguish! I am pained at my very heart! My heart trembles within me. I can’t hold my peace, because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.

²⁰ Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he a darling child? For as often as I speak against him, I still earnestly remember him. therefore my heart yearns for him. I will surely have mercy on him,” says Yahweh.

²⁰ “Look, Yahweh; for I am in distress. My heart is troubled. My heart turns over within me, for I have grievously rebelled. Abroad, the sword bereaves. At home, it is like death.

¹¹ My eyes fail with tears. My heart is troubled. My liver is poured on the earth, because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because the young children and the infants swoon in the streets of the city.

⁶ I am in pain and bowed down greatly. I go mourning all day long.

⁹ I will ask God, my rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”

³ He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering and acquainted with disease. He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn’t respect him. ⁴ Surely he has borne our sickness and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted.

¹ I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. ² He has led me and caused me to walk in darkness, and not in light. ³ Surely he turns his hand against me again and again all day long.

¹⁴ if I have said to corruption, ‘You are my father;’ to the worm, ‘My mother,’ and ‘My sister,’

¹⁹ though you have crushed us in the haunt of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death.

⁶ I am like a pelican of the wilderness. I have become as an owl of the waste places.

²¹ But wild animals of the desert will lie there, and their houses will be full of jackals. Ostriches will dwell there, and wild goats will frolic there. ²² Wolves will cry in their fortresses, and jackals in the pleasant palaces. Her time is near to come, and her days will not be prolonged.

¹⁴ I chattered like a swallow or a crane. I moaned like a dove. My eyes weaken looking upward. Lord, I am oppressed. Be my security.”

⁸ For this I will lament and wail; I will go stripped and naked; I will howl like the jackals, and moan like the daughters of owls.

³ but Esau I hated, and made his mountains a desolation, and gave his heritage to the jackals of the wilderness.”

⁸³ For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke. I don’t forget your statutes.

⁴ He has made my flesh and my skin old. He has broken my bones.

⁸ Their appearance is blacker than a coal. They are not known in the streets. Their skin clings to their bones. It is withered. It has become like a stick.

¹⁰ Our skin is black like an oven, because of the burning heat of famine.

¹ By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down. Yes, we wept, when we remembered Zion. ² On the willows in that land, we hung up our harps. ³ For there, those who led us captive asked us for songs. Those who tormented us demanded songs of joy: “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!” ⁴ How can we sing Yahweh’s song in a foreign land?

⁴ a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

⁴ My heart flutters. Horror has frightened me. The twilight that I desired has been turned into trembling for me.

¹² In that day, the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, called to weeping, to mourning, to baldness, and to dressing in sackcloth;

⁷ The new wine mourns. The vine languishes. All the merry-hearted sigh. ⁸ The mirth of tambourines ceases. The sound of those who rejoice ends. The joy of the harp ceases. ⁹ They will not drink wine with a song. Strong drink will be bitter to those who drink it.

¹⁵ The joy of our heart has ceased. Our dance is turned into mourning.

¹⁸ Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting. No musical instruments were brought before him; and his sleep fled from him.
