²³ Then Judah said: "Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you did not find her." ²⁴ Three months later Judah was told: "Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant." Judah said: "Bring her out and have her burned to death!" ²⁵ As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. "I am pregnant by the man who owns these," she said. She added: "See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are." ²⁶ Judah recognized them and said: "She is more righteous than I, since I would not give her to my son Shelah." He did not sleep with her again.

¹⁹ She made him sleep on her knees, and then she called for a man who shaved off the seven braids of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. ²⁰ And she said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" And he woke up from his sleep and said, "I will go out just like every other time and shake myself free," but he did not know that the LORD had left him. ²¹ And the Philistines seized him, gouged his eyes, and brought him to Gaza. They tied him up with bronze shackles, and he became a grinder in the prison.

²⁶ "Was it not in these things that Solomon, king of Israel, did wrong? Among a number of nations there was no king like him. He was dear to his God, and God made him king over all Israel. But even he was made to do evil by strange women.

²⁹ So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife. Whoever touches her will not be unpunished. ³⁰ Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving. ³¹ but if he is found, he must repay seven times. He shall give all the wealth of his house. ³² He who commits adultery with a woman lacks judgment and destroys himself. ³³ A wound and dishonour shall he get, and his reproach shall never be wiped away. ³⁴ because jealousy incites a strong man's rage, and he will show no mercy when it's time for revenge. ³⁵ He will not accept any compensation, and he will not be willing, though the bribe is large.

¹³ They offer sacrifices on the mountain tops, burning offerings on the hills, under oaks, poplars, and terebinth trees, since their shade is very good. Therefore your daughters are prostitutes and your daughters-in-law commit adultery. ¹⁴ I will not punish your daughters when they play the prostitute, nor your brides when they commit adultery; because the men consort with prostitutes, and they sacrifice with the shrine prostitutes; so the people without understanding will come to ruin.
