¹³ Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he also will cry, but will not be heard.

⁷ "If there should be a poor man among your relatives in one of the cities of the land that the LORD your God is about to give you, don't be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your poor relative. ⁸ But let your hand be open to give him the use of whatever he is in need of. ⁹ "Be careful not to think this wicked thought to yourselves: 'The seventh year, the year of remission, is drawing near,' and you show ill will toward your poor relative and not give to him. He may then call to the LORD on account of you, and you will be guilty of sin. ¹⁰ You must surely give to him, and your heart must not be grieved when you give to him, because for this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you put your hand to. ¹¹ For the poor will never cease out of the land. Therefore I command you to surely open your hand to your brother, to your needy, and to your poor, in your land.

¹ And a cry of the people and their wives will be great against their brethren the Jews. ² Yes, they who say, We, our sons and our daughters, are many; and we take crop to eat and live. ³ Others were saying, "We're having to mortgage our fields, our vineyards, and our homes so we can buy grain during this famine." ⁴ And others there were that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards. ⁵ Now our flesh is like the flesh of our brothers, our sons are like their sons. Look, we are subduing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and there are some from our daughters being molested. We are powerless, and our fields and vineyards belong to others."

¹³ Shaking out the folds of my robe, I said: "So, may God send out from his house and his work every man who does not keep this agreement. Even so let him be sent out and made as nothing." All the people said: "Amen!" They praised the LORD. The people did as they said.

⁴¹ They cried, but there was none to save; even to the LORD, but he did not answer them.

⁴ Their venom is like the venom of a serpent, Like a deaf cobra that has contracted its ear,

²⁸ Then they will call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me;

²⁷ He who gives to the poor will not lack. But he who hides his eyes will have many curses.

¹⁵ "When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you. Even though you offer many prayers, I will not listen because your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ "Wash yourselves! Become clean! Get your evil deeds out of my sight. Stop doing evil. ¹⁷ Learn to do well—Seek justice, Correct the oppressor,—Vindicate the fatherless, Plead the cause of the widow,

⁶ Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke ⁷ "Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into the house? When you see the naked, should you cover him and not hide yourself from your own flesh? ⁸ »Your light will break out like the dawn. Your recovery will speedily spring forth. Your righteousness will go before you and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. ⁹ Then you will call, and the LORD will answer. You will cry for help, and he will say, 'Here I am.' “If you take away from among you the yoke, finger pointing, and speaking wickedly;

¹⁶ But then you turned around and profaned my name when each of you took back his male and female slaves whom you had set free according to their desire, and you forced them to become male and female slaves."' ¹⁷ "Therefore, this is what the LORD says: 'You haven't obeyed me by each of you proclaiming a release for your brothers and neighbors. Now I'm going to proclaim a release for you,' declares the LORD, 'a release to the sword, to plague, and to famine, and I'll make you a horrifying sight to all the kingdoms of the earth.

⁹ Thus saith the Lord Almighty, Execute just judgment and shew mercy and compassion one to another; ¹⁰ And do not oppress the widow, or the fatherless, the alien, or the poor. And do not devise evil in your heart, of a man against his brother. ¹¹ But they refused to pay attention, turned their backs, and stopped listening. ¹² "They made their hearts hard like flint and would not listen to the law, and the words that the LORD Almighty sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Great anger came from the LORD Almighty!" ¹³ "'I cried, and they would not listen. Now they will cry, and I will not listen,' said the LORD Almighty!

¹⁴ For if you forgive men their offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

² For with the same judgment you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

³⁰ But he refused. Instead, he went and had him thrown into prison until he could pay his debt. ³¹ When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and went and told their master all that had happened. ³² Then his master called for him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I canceled all of your debt because you begged me to. ³³ Should you not have had mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had on you?’ ³⁴ In his anger, his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should repay all that he owed. ³⁵ That is how My Heavenly Father will treat each of you, unless you forgive your brother from your heart.”

⁴¹ Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. ⁴² For I was hungry, and you gave me nothing to eat: I was thirsty, and you gave me nothing to drink: ⁴³ I was a stranger and you did not take me in; I was naked and you did not clothe me; I was sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ ⁴⁴ Then they will answer, 'Lord, when did we ever see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or needing clothes, or sick, or in prison, and did not wait on you?' ⁴⁵ Then the King will answer, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.’ ⁴⁶ And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

²⁵ After the master of the house gets up and shuts the door, you will stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ But he will reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’

⁵⁷ At this they covered their ears, cried out in a loud voice, and rushed together at him.

¹³ For judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment. ¹⁴ What good is it, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith, but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? ¹⁵ Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. ¹⁶ If one of you tells him, “Go in peace; stay warm and well fed,” but does not provide for his physical needs, what good is that?
