⁴ Then He said to them: “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.

⁶ For I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt-offerings.

¹⁰ and a man with a withered hand was there. In order to accuse Jesus, they asked Him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” ¹¹ He replied, “If one of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out? ¹² How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

²⁷ Then He said to them: “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. ²⁸ So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

³⁴ But they kept quiet: for along the way they had discussed which of them was the greatest.

⁹ Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?"

¹³ Then He placed His hands on her and immediately she straightened up and praised God. ¹⁴ But answering, being angry that Jesus healed on the sabbath, the synagogue ruler said to the crowd, There are six days in which it is right to work. Therefore, coming in these, be healed, and not on the sabbath day. ¹⁵ Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it? ¹⁶ Then ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years, be loosed on the Sabbath day from this bond?" ¹⁷ When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, and all the people were delighted at all the splendid things that he did.

¹ One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler who belonged to the Pharisees, they watched him. ² In front of Him was a man suffering from dropsy. ³ So Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?" ⁴ But they kept silent. So he took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him away. ⁵ And He asked them, “Which of you whose son or ox falls into a pit on the Sabbath day will not immediately pull him out?”
