² "Are you the King of the Jews?" asked Pilate. "It is true," replied Jesus.

² and asked, "Where is the one who was born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

¹¹ Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus said, "Yes." ¹² And when he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he made no answer. ¹³ Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear how many charges they're bringing against you?" ¹⁴ But Jesus gave no answer, not even to a single charge, much to the governor’s amazement.

⁹ “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked.

¹² "What should I do with the one you call the King of the Jews?" Pilate asked.

¹⁸ And they began to salute him: Hail, king of the Jews.

²⁶ The written notice of the charge against him read, "The king of the Jews."

² And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding payment of taxes to Caesar, and proclaiming Himself to be Christ, a king.” ³ So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.

²⁹ So Pilate came outside to them and asked, "What charge do you bring against this man?" ³⁰ "If the man were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you." ³¹ Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." The Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death." ³² This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to indicate the kind of death He was going to die. ³³ Pilate went back into the Praetorium, summoned Jesus, and asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” ³⁴ “Are you saying this on your own,” Jesus asked, “or did others tell you about Me?” ³⁵ “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?” ³⁶ Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now, My kingdom is not of this realm.” ³⁷ Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus answered, "As you say, I am a king. It was for this that I was born and for this that I came to the world, to give testimony for truth. Everyone who is on the side of truth listens to my voice." ³⁸ “What is truth?” Pilate asked. And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, “I find no basis for a charge against Him.

¹⁹ Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. ²⁰ Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek. ²¹ The chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Do not write, The King of the Jews; but that: He claimed, I am King of the Jews. ²² Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."
