¹³ Later, they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to catch Jesus in His words.

¹² Those who seek my life lay traps for me. Those who are out to harm me talk about ruining me. All day long they think of ways to deceive me.

⁵ All day long they twist my words. All their thoughts are against me for evil. ⁶ They conspire and lurk, watching my steps. They are eager to take my life.

⁵ The proud have hidden a snare for me, they have spread the cords of a net by the path. They have set traps for me. Selah.

²¹ those who make a man guilty by a word, and lay a trap for the reprover in the gate, and turn aside the just for a worthless thing.

¹⁸ Then they said, “Come! Let's devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law won't perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let's strike him with the tongue, and let's not give heed to any of his words.”

⁶ and Jesus said to them, "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees."

¹⁵ Then the Pharisees went out and plotted to trap Jesus in His words. ¹⁶ They sent their disciples to Him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are honest and that You teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You defer to no one, because You pay no attention to external appearance. ¹⁷ Tell us, then, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" ¹⁸ But Jesus, knowing their malice, said, Hypocrites! Why do ye try me? ¹⁹ Show me the coin used for the tax." They brought him a denarius. ²⁰ He asked them, "Whose head is this, and whose inscription?" ²¹ “Caesar’s,” they answered. So Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” ²² When they heard this, they were amazed. Then they left him and went away.

⁶ At this, the Pharisees went out and plotted with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.

¹⁵ Jesus had been warning them, "Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!"

²⁰ Keeping a close watch on Him, they sent spies, who pretended to be innocent, so that they might latch on to some thing He said, so as to hand Him over to the power and the authority of the governor. ²¹ So they questioned Him, saying: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and you do not show favoritism but teach the way of God in truth. ²² Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" ²³ He saw through their cunning and said to them, ²⁴ "Show me a florin. Whose head and title are on it?" ²⁵ Jesus said to them: Then, give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's. ²⁶ And they were unable to trap Him in His words before the people; and astonished at His answer, they fell silent.
