'" ¹⁶ So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken: ¹⁷ Then he made Judah come forward, and the family of the Zerahites was taken; and he made the family of the Zerahites come forward man by man; and Zabdi was taken; ¹⁸ Then the house of Zabdi came forward man by man, and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

¹⁶ “The whole congregation of the LORD says, 'What trespass is this that you have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away today from following the LORD, in that you have built yourselves an altar, to rebel today against the LORD? ¹⁷ Is not the sin of Peor enough for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves today, and for which a plague came to the congregation of the LORD, ¹⁸ Now then, are you turning away from following the LORD today? If you rebel against the LORD today, by tomorrow he will be angry with the entire community of Israel. ¹⁹ "If your land is not fit to worship in, come over into the LORD's land, where his Tabernacle is. ¹³ When Gideon arrived, he heard a man telling a friend about a dream. He was saying: "I dreamed that a loaf of barley bread rolled into our camp and hit a tent. ⁹ But this is what we will do to Gibeah: we will go up against it by the decision of the Lord; ¹⁰ And we will take ten men to the hundred to all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred to a thousand, and a thousand to ten thousand, to take provision for the people, to do for those going to Gibeah of Benjamin; according to all the folly which was done in Israel.

²⁰ So Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen. ²¹ He brought the tribe of Benjamin near by their families and the family of the Matrites was chosen. Then Saul the son of Kish was chosen; but when they looked for him, he could not be found.

³⁸ Saul said, Come here, all you chiefs of the people and let us find out which of us has sinned today. ³⁹ Indeed, as the LORD who delivers Israel lives, even if the sin is with my son Jonathan, he shall surely die!" Not a single one of the soldiers answered him.

⁴¹ Therefore Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel, Show the right. And Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, but the people escaped. ⁴² And Saul said: (Cast lots between me, and Jonathan, my son. And Jonathan was taken.

⁷ In the twelfth year of the reign of King Ahasuerus, in the first month (the month Nisan), the pur, that is the lot, was cast in Haman's presence to determine the best day and month to carry out his plot. The lot indicated the twelfth month, the month Adar.

¹⁸ They divide My garments among them and cast lots for My clothing.

³³ The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.

⁶ Each helps the other and says to his brother: "Be strong!" ⁷ The craftsman encourages the goldsmith. He who smooths with the hammer spurs on him who strikes the anvil. He says of the welding: It is good. He nails down the idol so it will not topple.

³⁵ When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes by casting lots.

²³ So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. ²⁴ And they prayed, “Lord, You know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two You have chosen ²⁵ to take this place of service as an apostle which Judas left to go where he belonged." ²⁶ Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

¹⁹ "He destroyed seven nations in Canaan and gave their land to his people as their inheritance.

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the proper time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.
