³ A fire devoureth before them, and behind them a flame blazeth; the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing escapeth them.

⁸ ¶ And the LORD God had planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.

¹⁰ Lot looked up and saw that the district of the Jordan River was well watered, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar. This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.

⁵ To cover the face of the earth, that nothing thereof may appear, but that which the hail hath left may be eaten: for they shall feed upon all the trees that spring in the fields.

¹⁵ They covered all the ground until it was black with them. They ate all the plants and all the fruit on the trees that the hail had left. Nothing green was left on any tree or plant anywhere in Egypt.

³ Our God comes, and does not keep silent. A fire devours before him. It is very stormy around him.

³⁴ He spoke, and the locusts came, and the grasshoppers, without number, ³⁵ They consumed every green plant in their land, and devoured the fruit of their soil.

³ the LORD will surely comfort Zion. He will look with compassion on all her ruins. He will make her deserts like Eden and her wastelands like the garden of the LORD. Joy and gladness will be found in her along with thanksgiving and the sound of singing.

¹⁷ "They'll devour your harvest and your food. They'll devour your sons and your daughters. They'll devour your vines and your fig trees. With their swords they'll batter down your fortified cities in which you trust.

⁸ The cedars in the garden of God could not hide it; the fir trees were not like its boughs, and the plane trees were not as its branches; nor was any tree in the garden of God like it in its beauty. ⁹ I have made him beautiful by his many branches, so that all the trees of Eden in the garden of God envied him.

⁴ What the swarming locust has left, the great locust has eaten. What the great locust has left, the grasshopper has eaten. What the grasshopper has left, the caterpillar has eaten. ⁵ Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine; for it is cut off from your mouth. ⁶ For a nation has come up on my land, strong, and without number. His teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he has the fangs of a lioness. ⁷ He has laid my vine waste, and stripped my fig tree. He has stripped its bark, and thrown it away. Its branches are made white.

¹⁹ To you, O LORD, I cry out, because fire has devoured the pastures of the desert, and flames burned all the trees of the field. ²⁰ Also, the beasts of the field long for you, because the courses of water are dried up, and fire has devoured the pastures of the desert.

⁴ Thus the Sovereign LORD showed me and behold, the Sovereign LORD called for judgment by fire; and it dried up the great deep, and would have devoured the land.

¹⁴ But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.
