⁵ "This is what the LORD God of Israel says: 'Like these good figs, so I'll regard as good the exiles of Judah whom I sent from this place to the land of the Chaldeans.

¹⁶ and fed you in the desert with manna that neither you nor your ancestors had known, to humble and test you so that things go well with you later.

¹² Blessed is the man whom you discipline, LORD, and teach out of your Law; ¹³ to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. ¹⁴ For the LORD won't reject his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.

⁶⁷ Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word.

⁷¹ It is good for me that I was afflicted, so that I might learn your statutes.

⁷ the LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.

⁹ And I will bring the remaining third into the fire, and I will refine them like one refines silver, and I will test them like one tests gold. They will call my name, and I will answer them. I will say, 'They are my people,' and they will say, 'the LORD is my God.'"

¹² But he replied, 'I tell you with certainty, I don't know you!'

²⁷ My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me;

²⁸ And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.

³ But the one who loves God is known by God.

⁹ But now that you know God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you are turning back to those weak and worthless principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?

¹⁹ Nevertheless, God's firm foundation stands, having this seal: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Everyone who names the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness."

⁵ And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, or lose heart when He rebukes you. ⁶ For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he punishes every son he accepts." ⁷ Endure suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? ⁸ If you do not experience discipline like everyone else, then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we have all had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them. Should we not much more submit to the Father of our spirits and live? ¹⁰ Our fathers disciplined us for a short time as they thought best, but God disciplines us for our good, so that we may share in His holiness.

¹⁹ Those I love, I rebuke and discipline. Therefore be earnest and repent.
