⁸ The cedars in the garden of God could not hide it; the fir trees were not like its boughs, and the plane trees were not as its branches; nor was any tree in the garden of God like it in its beauty.

⁸ ¶ And the LORD God had planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed. ⁹ the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground, trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

¹⁰ Lot looked up and saw that the district of the Jordan River was well watered, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar. This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading like a green tree in its native soil:

¹⁰ The mountains were covered with its shade, and the mighty cedars with its boughs.

⁷ But this is not what is in his mind, and this is not his design; but his purpose is destruction, and the cutting off of more and more nations. ⁸ For he says, Are not my commanders all like kings? ⁹ Is not, Calno, like Carchemish? Is not, Hamath, like Arpad? Is not, Samaria, like Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images excelled those of Jerusalem and of Samaria, ¹¹ shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her idols? ¹² And this shall happen: when the Lord has finished all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, "I will punish the arrogance of the king of Assyria and his haughtiness." ¹³ For he has said, “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding. I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures. Like a valiant man I have brought down their rulers. ¹⁴ and my hand found, as a nest, the valuables of the people: and as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth; and no one flapped the wing or gaped the mouth or chirped.

⁴ He said to them: "Tell Hezekiah, This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: ‘What makes you so confident? ⁵ You say, yea, a word of the lips, `Counsel and mastery for war.' Now, on whom do you trust, that you revolt against me? ⁶ Look, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. ⁷ And if thou say to me, We rely upon the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar? ⁸ »Now, make a deal with my master, the king of Assyria. I will give you two thousand horses if you can put riders on them. ⁹ But how can you drive back one governor among the least of my master's servants, when you trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen? ¹⁰ And now have I come up against this land to destroy it without the LORD? the LORD said to me, Go up to this land and destroy it. ¹¹ And Eliakim and Shebna and Joah said to the chief of the cupbearers, Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. But do not speak to us in Jewish in the ears of the people on the wall. ¹² And Rab-shakeh said, Is it to thy master and to thee that my master sent me to speak these words? Is it not to the men that sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own urine with you? ¹³ Then the field commander stood and shouted loudly in the Judean language: "Listen to the great king, the king of Assyria. ¹⁴ "'This is what the king says: 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He cannot rescue you. ¹⁵ Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, "The LORD will surely deliver us. This city won't be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."' ¹⁶ "'Do not listen to Hezekiah, because this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me! Come out, and give yourselves up to me! Everyone will eat from his own grapevine and fig tree and drink from his own cistern. ¹⁷ until I come and take you to a land like your land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, ¹⁸ lest Hezekiah mislead you, saying, 'the LORD will save us!' Did the gods of the nations each save his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?

¹¹ »‘You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries. He destroyed them completely. And will you be delivered? ¹² "'Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my forefathers deliver them? And what about the gods of Gozan, Haran, Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar? ¹³ "'Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, or of Hena or Ivvah?'"

³ the LORD will surely comfort Zion. He will look with compassion on all her ruins. He will make her deserts like Eden and her wastelands like the garden of the LORD. Joy and gladness will be found in her along with thanksgiving and the sound of singing.

¹³ You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz, emerald, chrysolite, onyx, jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and beryl. Gold work of tambourines and of pipes was in you. In the day that you were created they were prepared.
