¹ Who is as the wise? Who knows the interpretation of a word? Human wisdom lights his face and the strength of his face changes. ² Keep the king's command, because of the oath to God. ³ "Do not be in a hurry to leave him. Do not persist in an evil activity, for he does whatever he pleases." ⁴ for the king's word is supreme. Who can say to him, "What are you doing?" ⁵ Whoever keeps the commandment shall not come to harm, and his wise heart will know the time and procedure. ⁶ For there is a proper time and right procedure for every matter, even though the trouble of man weighs heavy upon him. ⁷ for he knows not what becomes; for who can tell him when it became? ⁸ Just as no human being has control over the wind to restrain it, so also no human being has control over the day of his death. Just as no one is discharged during war, so wickedness will not release those who practice it. ⁹ All this have I seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man rules over another to his own hurt. ¹⁰ In such a case I saw the wicked entombed, Those who used to come and go from the holy place And were lauded in the city where they had done such things. This too is vanity." ¹¹ Whenever a sentence for a crime is not carried out swiftly, the human mind becomes determined to commit evil. ¹² Though a sinner commits crimes a hundred times, and lives long, yet surely I know that it will be better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him. ¹³ but not good with the wicked: he prolongs not his days as a shadow; because he awes not at the face of Elohim. ¹⁴ There is a vanity that happens on earth: sometimes the righteous suffer what the wicked deserve, and sometimes the wicked receive what the righteous deserve. I said, "This also is vanity!" ¹⁵ So I recommend enjoyment. For there is nothing better for man under the sun than to eat and to drink and to rejoice. This will accompany him in his toil the days of his life that God gives to him under the sun. ¹⁶ When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on the earth (even though eyes see no sleep day or night), ¹⁷ Then I saw all the work of God—man is not able to discover the work that is done under the sun. Although man may toil in seeking, he cannot find it. Even if a wise man claims that he knows it, he cannot find it.

⁸ They answered: We have dreamed a dream, and there is nobody to interpret it to us. And Joseph said to them: Doth not interpretation belong to God? Tell me what you have dreamed:

¹⁵ Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it." ¹⁶ And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, "God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace without me."

³⁸ And Pharaoh said to his servants, Can we find any man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God? ³⁹ Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has made all of this known to you there is no one as discerning and wise as you.

²⁹ Now when Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two stones in his hand, he was not conscious that his face was shining because of his talk with God. ³⁰ Aaron and all the Israelites looked at Moses and saw his face glowing. They were afraid to come near him.

⁵⁰ A hard-faced nation, who will have no respect for the old or mercy for the young:

²³ "Yet if there is an angel on his side as a mediator, one out of a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him,

⁶ to understand a proverb, and parables, the words and riddles of the wise.

⁸ "Love wisdom and she will exalt you. Embrace wisdom and she will honor you. ⁹ She will put a crown of grace on your head, giving you a head-dress of glory.

²⁴ With the face of the wise is wisdom, but a fool's eyes are in the ends of the earth.

⁵ A wise man is strong; and a man of knowledge increaseth strength.

¹³ Then I saw that wisdom is better than foolish ways--as the light is better than the dark. ¹⁴ The wise man, his eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness. And I also perceived that one event happeneth to them all.

²⁸ But there is a God in Heaven who reveals secrets and makes known to King Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head upon your bed are these. ²⁹ O king, thou didst cast in thy mind, what should come hereafter: So he that is the opener of mysteries, telleth thee what is for to come. ³⁰ But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living man, but so that the meaning might be known to the king, and that you might know the thoughts of your heart.

⁴⁷ The king answered Daniel and said, "Truly your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings, and he reveals mysteries, for you are able to reveal this mystery."

¹⁸ "This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw. Belteshazzar, tell me its meaning, since none of the advisors in my kingdom can tell me its interpretation. But you are able to do so because the spirit of the holy gods is in you." ¹⁹ Then Daniel (also known as Belteshazzar) was greatly troubled for a while and was terrified by his thoughts. The king said, "Belteshazzar, don't let the dream or its meaning terrify you." Belteshazzar responded, "Your majesty, if only the dream were about your enemies and its meaning about those who oppose you!

² There He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.

¹³ When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and recognized that they had been with Jesus.

²⁹ And now, Lord, consider their threats, and enable Your servants to speak Your word with complete boldness,

¹⁵ All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

¹³ This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. ¹⁴ The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. ¹⁵ The spiritual man judges all things, but he himself is not subject to anyone’s judgment. ¹⁶ For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

¹⁹ Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, divine utterance may be given me, so that I will boldly make known the mystery of the gospel,

¹⁷ But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was rescued from the lion's mouth.

²⁰ Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture comes from the prophet’s own interpretation.

¹¹ "The case between them must be settled by swearing an oath to the LORD that the neighbor did not take the other person's animal. The owner must accept the oath. The neighbor does not have to make up for the loss.

⁷ And the king spared Miphiboseth the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the oath of the Lord, that had been between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

⁴³ Why then have you not kept the oath of the Lord and the order which I gave you?

²⁴ And all the officials and mighty warriors, and also all the sons of King David, pledged allegiance to King Solomon.

²¹ My son, fear the LORD and the king. Do not join those who are rebellious:

¹³ »He took one of the royal family and made a covenant with him, putting him under oath. He also took away the mighty of the land, ¹⁴ that the kingdom might be brought low, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand. ¹⁵ But he rebelled against him by sending his messengers to Egypt to give to him horses and a large army. Will he succeed? Will he escape doing these things, and can he break the covenant and escape? ¹⁶ As truly as I live, sayeth the LORD God, he shall die at Babylon: in the place where the king dwelleth, that made him king, whose oath he hath despised, and whose covenant he hath broken. ¹⁷ Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company won't help him in the war, when they cast up mounds and build forts, to cut off many persons. ¹⁸ Seeing he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, see, he had given his hand, and has done all these things, he shall not escape. ¹⁹ “Therefore the Sovereign LORD says: 'As I live, I will surely bring on his own head my oath that he has despised and my covenant that he has broken. ²⁰ '"I will spread out a hunter's net and catch him in it. I will take him to Babylon and punish him there, because he was unfaithful to me.

¹ Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. ² Consequently, the one who resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. ³ For rulers are not a terror for those who do good works, but to those who do evil. Do you want to have no fear of the one in authority? do that which is good, and you shall have his praise: ⁴ For he is God's servant to you for good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain; he is God's servant, an avenger to execute wrath on the wrongdoer. ⁵ Therefore, it is necessary to submit to authority, not only to avoid punishment, but also as a matter of conscience.

¹ Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do every good work,

¹³ Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to the king as the supreme authority, ¹⁴ or to governors who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right. ¹⁵ For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorance of foolish men. ¹⁶ Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a covering for evil; live as servants of God. ¹⁷ Treat everyone with high regard: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.

⁵⁰ And Adonias fearing Solomon, arose and went, and took hold of the horn of the altar. ⁵¹ Solomon was told, "Look, Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon, and he has grasped the horns of the altar, saying, 'Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will surely not kill his servant with the sword!'" ⁵² Solomon said, "If he is a son of noble character, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, but if evil is found in him, then he will die."

²¹ She said, "Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother as wife." ²² King Solomon answered his mother, "Why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also; for he is my elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah." ²³ Then king Solomon sware by the LORD, saying, "God do so to me and so thereto if Adonijah have not spoken this word against himself. ²⁴ And now [as] the LORD liveth, who has established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who has made me a house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.

²⁹ He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a quick temper displays folly.

¹⁴ The king's wrath is a messenger of death, but a wise man will pacify it. ¹⁵ The light of the king's face causes life. His favor is like a gentle rain in spring.

³¹ a strutting rooster or he-goat, and a king whose army is with him.

⁴ If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your post, for calmness can undo great offenses.

⁴ I know that you are stubborn, and your neck is an iron sinew, and your forehead bronze.

¹⁶ "We refuse to listen to what you have told us in the name of the LORD. ¹⁷ But we will certainly do whatever thing goes out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings, and our rulers, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. And we had plenty of food, and were well, and saw no evil.

³⁵ And all the people of the earth are as nothing: he does his pleasure in the army of heaven and among the people of the earth: and no one is able to keep back his hand, or say to him, What are you doing?

¹⁹ Because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. He killed whom he wanted to, and he kept alive whom he wanted to. He raised up whom he wanted to, and he put down whom he wanted to.

⁸ “Tell me,” said Peter, “is this the price you and your husband got for the land?” “Yes,” she answered, “that is the price.” ⁹ Peter said to her, "How could both of you agree in such a way to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door; they will carry you out, too."

²⁵ So King Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah son of Jehoiada,—and he fell upon him, that he died.

²⁹ It was told to King Solomon that Joab had fled to the tent of the LORD and was beside the altar. So Solomon sent word to Benaiah son of Jehoiada, saying, "Go and fall upon him." ³⁰ Benaiah went to the Tent of the LORD and told Joab: Come out. Joab said: "No! Let me die here." So Benaiah returned to the king and gave him the answer Joab gave him. ³¹ And the king will say to him, Do as he said, and strike upon him, and bury him; and take away the bloods which Joab shed gratuitously, from me and from my father's house. ³² The LORD will repay him for his bloodshed because, without my father David's consent he attacked and murdered two men more righteous and better than he, Ner's son Abner, the commander of Israel's army and Jether's son Amasa, commander of Judah's army. ³³ So shall their blood return on the head of Joab, and on the head of his descendants forever. But to David, and to his descendants, and to his house, and to his throne, there shall be peace forever from the LORD." ³⁴ So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and struck him down, and slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.

⁴⁶ Then the king commanded Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he went out and fell upon him, and he died. So the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

¹² Look, he snatches away. Who can hinder him? Who will ask him, 'What are you doing?'

¹² "But I tell you, Job, in this you are not right, for God is greater than man. ¹³ "Why do you complain to him that he answers none of man's words?

¹⁸ Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art worthless? and to princes, Ye are wicked? ¹⁹ who does not respect the persons of rulers, nor regards the rich more than the poor. For they all are the work of his hands.

¹² The king's wrath is like the roaring of a lion, but his favor is like dew on the grass.

² A king's anger is like a lion's roar; anyone who angers him forfeits his life.

¹⁵ "Now if you are ready at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, zither, pipes, and all kinds of music, to fall down and worship the image that I have made, good! But if you do not worship it you will be thrown into the midst of a blazing furnace that same hour. What god will be able to rescue you from my hand?"

⁴ I tell you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. ⁵ But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear the One who, after you have been killed, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him!

²⁰ But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to Him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?”

¹ Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. ² Consequently, the one who resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. ³ For rulers are not a terror for those who do good works, but to those who do evil. Do you want to have no fear of the one in authority? do that which is good, and you shall have his praise: ⁴ For he is God's servant to you for good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain; he is God's servant, an avenger to execute wrath on the wrongdoer.

¹⁷ But the midwives feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt told them. Instead, they let the boys live.

²⁰ God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and became very mighty. ²¹ And so because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.

³² And of the sons of Issachar, having understanding for the times, to know what Israel should do; their heads [are] two hundred, and all their brethren [are] at their command.

⁶ Then I would not be ashamed when I look to all your commands.

¹⁴ The wise man, his eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness. And I also perceived that one event happeneth to them all.

² Keep the king's command, because of the oath to God.

² The heart of the wise inclines to his right, but the heart of the fool inclines to his left.

¹¹ Ephraim is crushed, broken by judgment, because he willingly pursued idols.

⁵⁶ You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; but how is it you do not know how to interpret this present time? ⁵⁷ Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?

²⁵ Jesus said to them: Then, give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's.

¹⁹ But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to listen to you rather than God.

²⁹ Peter and the other Apostles replied, "We must obey God rather than man.

⁵ Therefore, it is necessary to submit to authority, not only to avoid punishment, but also as a matter of conscience. ⁶ This is also why you pay taxes. For the authorities are God’s servants, who devote themselves to their work. ⁷ Therefore give everyone what you owe: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if customs, then customs; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

¹⁴ The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. ¹⁵ The spiritual man judges all things, but he himself is not subject to anyone’s judgment.

⁹ And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and profound insight, ¹⁰ so that you may approve what is excellent, and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ;

⁹ For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,

¹⁴ But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained their sensibilities to distinguish good from evil.

¹³ Who will harm you if you are eager to do good? ¹⁴ But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their intimidation; do not be shaken.”

¹ There is a season for everything, and a time for every event under heaven:

¹¹ He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in their hearts, yet so that man can't find out the work that God has done from the beginning even to the end.

¹⁷ I said in my heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time for every purpose and for every work.

¹³ Consider the work of God. Who can make straight what he has made crooked? ¹⁴ When times are good, be joyful, when times are bad, consider this: God made the one as well as the other, so people won't seek anything outside of his best.

⁹ Rejoice, young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

¹¹ Woe to the wicked. Disaster is upon them; for the work of his hands will be done to him. ¹² Children oppress my people! Women rule over them. O My people! Those who guide you lead you astray. They confuse the direction of your paths. ¹³ The LORD stands up to plead, and stands to judge the people. ¹⁴ the LORD enters into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: "It is you who have devoured the vineyard. The plunder of the poor is in your houses.

¹² And the Lord, the LORD Almighty, called on that day for weeping and mourning, and for baldness and girding with sackcloth. ¹³ and behold joy and rejoicing, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: -- Let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we die. ¹⁴ the LORD Almighty has disclosed himself in my ears: "Surely this iniquity will not be forgiven you until you die," says the LORD Almighty.

²⁵ After the master of the house gets up and shuts the door, you will stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ But he will reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’

²⁶ Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man: ²⁷ People were eating and drinking, marrying and being given in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. ²⁸ It was the same in the days of Lot: People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. ²⁹ But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and brimstone rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. ³⁰ It will be just like that on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

⁴² and said, “If only you had known on this day what would bring you peace! But now it is hidden from your eyes. ⁴³ For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, ⁴⁴ They will level you to the ground—you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.”

⁷ Hence, as the Holy Spirit says, ‘Today if you hear his voice, ⁸ do not harden your hearts, as you did in the rebellion, in the time of testing in the wilderness, ⁹ where your fathers tried Me by testing Me, and for forty years saw My works. ¹⁰ Therefore I was angry with that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts always go astray, and they have not known My ways.’ ¹¹ So I swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’”

²² for their calamity rises suddenly; and who knows the calamity of them both?

¹ He that is stiff necked and will not be reformed, shall suddenly be destroyed without any help.

²² So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than that he rejoices in his works Since that is his portion; For who can bring him to see what shall come after him?

¹² For who knows what is good for a man in his life during the few days of his fleeting life, which are fleeting as a shadow? For who can tell anyone what will happen in the future under the sun?

¹² For man does not know his time. Just as fish are caught in a cruel net and like birds who are seized in a snare, so also humans are ensnared at a cruel time when it falls suddenly upon them.

¹⁴ A fool moreover multiplies words. No man knows what has been, nor what will be. Who shall tell him what will come after him?

⁴⁴ For this reason, you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him.

⁵⁰ the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of,

⁶ At midnight the cry went out: ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ ⁷ Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. ⁸ The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ ⁹ ‘No,’ said the wise ones, ‘or there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ ¹⁰ But while they were on their way to buy it, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut. ¹¹ Afterwards the other bridesmaids came. 'Sir, Sir,' they said, 'open the door to us!' ¹² But he replied, 'I tell you with certainty, I don't know you!' ¹³ Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

¹ Now about the times and seasons, brothers, we do not need to write to you. ² for you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. ³ While people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

¹ "When you go to war against your enemies, you may see horses, chariots, and armies larger than yours. Do not be afraid of them for the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, will be with you. ² When you draw near to the battle, the priest shall approach and speak to the people ³ He should say: "Listen, Israel, today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not lose your courage! Do not be afraid. Do not tremble because of them. ⁴ For the LORD your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you. ⁵ "The officers should speak to the army: If you have built a new house that has not been dedicated, you may go home. Otherwise, you might die in battle, and someone else will dedicate it. ⁶ "'And is there a man here who has planted a vineyard and not yet benefited from it? Let him go home. Otherwise, he may die in battle and another man use it. ⁷ "'And is there a man here who is engaged to a woman and has not yet married her? Let him go back home. Otherwise, he may die in battle and another man marry her.' ⁸ "Let the officials also speak to the army, 'Is there a man here who is afraid and faint-hearted? Let him go back home. Otherwise, he may demoralize his fellow soldier.'

¹⁴ For we must die and are as water split on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; God does not take away life, but devises means that he who is banished is not an outcast from him.

¹⁵ They went out in the direction of the Jordan River, and the entire roadway was strewn with clothes and equipment that the Assyrians had abandoned in their haste to leave! So the messengers returned and reported to the king.

⁵ "Man's days are determined. You have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed.

¹⁴ If he set his heart on man, if he gather to himself his spirit and his breath;

¹⁷ The wicked shall return to Sheol, even all the nations that forget God

⁶ those who put confidence in their wealth and boast about their great riches? ⁷ A man cannot at all redeem a brother, nor give to God a ransom for him, ⁸ For the redemption of their life is costly, no payment is ever enough, ⁹ That he should still live forever, and not see corruption.

⁵ but God will pull you down forever. He will snatch you and tear you away from your tent, and he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah ⁶ And the righteous will see and fear, and will laugh at him, saying, ⁷ Behold, the man who did not make God his strength; but he trusted in his many riches; he was strong in his destruction.

¹⁸ Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down into ruin. ¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed! They are completely swept away with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one wakes up, so, Lord, when you awake, you will despise their fantasies. ²¹ Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins. ²² I was so senseless and ignorant. I was a brute beast before you. ²³ But I am always with You; You have held me by my right hand. ²⁴ You shall guide me by Your counsel; and afterward You will take me to glory. ²⁵ Whom have I in heaven but you? and there is none on earth that I desire beside you. ²⁶ My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. ²⁷ Those who are far from you will perish. You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to you. ²⁸ But it is good for me to come close to God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge, that I may tell of all Your works.

⁴⁸ What man can live on and not see death? Can he deliver his life from the power of Sheol? Selah

³² The wicked is brought down in his calamity, but in death, the righteous has a refuge.

²¹ Who knows the spirit of man that goes upward, and the spirit of the beast that goes downward to the earth?

¹⁵ Because ye have said, “We have entered into a covenant with death, and with the nether world have we made an agreement; the overflowing scourge, when it passeth by, shall not come at us; for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we sought a hiding-place.”

¹⁸ "Your covenant with death will be annulled. Your agreement with the grave will not stand when the overflowing scourge passes through. Then you will be trampled down by it.

⁴³ it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power;

⁴ For He was indeed crucified in weakness, yet He lives by God’s power. And though we are weak in Him, yet by God’s power we will live with Him to serve you.

²⁷ Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment,

⁵ The king of Egypt was told that the people had escaped. He and his officials changed their minds and said: "What have we done? We have let the Israelites escape, and we have lost them as our slaves!" ⁶ So he had his war-carriage made ready and took his people with him: ⁷ And he took six hundred select chariots and all the chariots of Egypt and officers over all of them. ⁸ And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and he chased after the Israelites. (Now the Israelites were going out boldly.) ⁹ The Egyptians pursued them. All the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen, and his army overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baal Zephon.

²⁸ The water returned and covered the chariots, the drivers, and all the Egyptian army that had followed the Israelites into the sea. None of them were left.

³⁰ But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as it is today.

¹⁰ You just defeated Edom and you're arrogant. Bask in your victory and stay home. Why incite trouble so that you yes, you! fall, along with Judah with you?" ¹¹ But Amaziah would not listen. So Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth Shemesh, which belongs to Judah. ¹² Judah was defeated by Israel and every man fled home.

⁷ They put the sons of Zedekiah to death before his eyes. Then they put out his eyes, chained him with iron bands and took him to Babylon.

¹⁴ I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and look, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

¹⁰ I have seen the busyness God gives to humans to preoccupy them.

⁷ And again I saw a vanity under the sun: ⁸ There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth. For whom then, do I labor, and deprive my soul of enjoyment? This also is vanity, yes, it is a miserable business.

⁸ If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a district, don't marvel at the matter: for one official is eyed by a higher one; and there are officials over them.

¹³ There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: wealth hoarded by its owner to his harm.

²⁵ I applied my heart to know and to search and to seek out wisdom and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly and the madness of error;

³⁴ And Jehu went in and ate and drank, and said, Look after this cursed woman and bury her, for she is a king's daughter. ³⁵ But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing left of her except her skull, her feet, and the palms of her hands.

¹⁸ "How often are they like straw before the wind, and like chaff that the storm carries away?

³² Yet is he carried to the graves, and watch is kept over the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley will be sweet to him. All men will draw after him, as there were innumerable before him.

¹² I am forgotten from their hearts like a dead man. I am like broken pottery.

¹ A song of ascents. Of David. I rejoiced in those who said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD." ² Our feet are standing In your gateways, O Jerusalem, ³ Jerusalem is built as a city that is compact together: ⁴ Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, to the testimony of Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. ⁵ for there the thrones of judgment settle - the thrones of the house of David.

⁷ The memory of the righteous shall be for a blessing; but the name of the wicked shall rot.

¹¹ There is no memory of former things. Those who follow will not remember those who are yet to come.

¹⁶ For neither the wise nor the fool will be long remembered, since in days to come everything will be forgotten. The wise man dies the same way as the fool, does he not?

⁵ For the living know that they will die, but the dead do not know anything. They no longer have a reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten.

¹³ LORD, you are the hope of Israel; all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn aside from you will be written in the dust, because they have forsaken the LORD, the spring of living water.

²² Now it happened that the poor man died, and the angels carried him into AbrahamÆs bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.

¹³ They presented false witnesses who said, “This man never stops speaking against this holy place and against the Law.

³⁸ But my righteous one will live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul is not well pleased with him."

¹⁵ But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.

³² But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart, and he did not let the people go.

¹¹ They send forth their children by flocks, and their sons lead the dance. ¹² They sing to the tambourine and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the flute. ¹³ They spend their days in prosperity, and in a moment they go down to Sheol ¹⁴ "They say to God: 'Leave us alone! We do not desire to know your ways.' ¹⁵ "Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what do we gain if we pray to him?

⁶ He says to himself: "Nothing can shake me. I will never face trouble."

²¹ These things you have done, and I have kept silence; you thought that I was like yourself, but I will rebuke you, and set in order before your eyes. ²² "Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you into pieces, and there be none to deliver.

¹⁸ Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of falsehood, and wickedness as with cart rope, ¹⁹ those who say, "Let him make haste; let him hurry his work so that we may see it and let it draw near and let the plan of the holy one of Israel come so that we may know it!"

¹⁰ Grace (favor) is shown to the wicked, but they do not learn righteousness. In a land of uprightness they go on doing evil and do not regard the majesty of the LORD.

¹¹ “Whom have you dreaded and feared, so that you lie, and have not remembered me, nor laid it to your heart? Haven't I held my peace for a long time, and you don't fear me?

¹⁵ then therefore hear the word of the LORD, O remnant of Judah. Thus says the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel: "If you are determined to go to Egypt, and you go to dwell as aliens there,

¹¹ Moab has been at ease from his youth. He has been undisturbed like wine on its dregs and not poured from vessel to vessel. He has not gone into exile. Therefore, his flavor has remained, and his aroma has not changed.

⁴⁹ and he then begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, ⁵⁰ the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of,

⁴ Or do you disregard the riches of His kindness, tolerance, and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you to repentance? ⁵ But because of your hard and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

³ First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. ⁴ “Where is the promise of His coming?” they will ask. “Ever since our fathers fell asleep, everything continues as it has from the beginning of creation.” ⁵ But they deliberately overlook the fact that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water, ⁶ By water the then-existing world was deluged and destroyed, ⁷ But by the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. ⁸ But do not overlook this one fact, dear friends, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like one day. ⁹ The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. ¹⁰ But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will be dissolved in the fire, and the earth and its works will not be found.

²⁵ You shall not eat it, so that it will go well for you and your children after you, because then you will be doing what is right in the eyes of the LORD.

⁵ Now thou thyself knowest what Joab son of Saruia hath done to me; what he did to the two chiefs of the armies of Israel, to Abenner son of Ner, and to Amessai son of Jether. He indeed slew them, and shed the blood of war in peace, and stained, with guiltless blood, the girdle on his loins, and the shoes on his feet. ⁶ Do therefore according to your wisdom, and let not his gray head go down to the grave in peace. ⁷ But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table; for so they came to me when I fled from Absalom your brother. ⁸ And, behold, you have with you Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I swore to him by the LORD, saying, I will not put you to death with the sword. ⁹ And now, do not hold him guiltless. For you are a wise man, and you know what you ought to do to him. But bring his gray head down to the grave with blood.

²⁵ There was no one like Ahab, who gave himself up to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, moved to it by Jezebel his wife.

³⁴ But a man drew his bow at a venture, and struck the king of Israel between the joints and the armor; wherefore he said unto his chariot-driver. Turn about, and carry me out of the camp; for I am wounded. ³⁵ The fight grew more violent as the day went on. The king was propped up in his chariot facing the Syrians (Aramaeans). The floor of the chariot was covered with the blood from his wound. By evening he died.

³⁰ Tremble before him, all the earth: The world also is established, it shall not be moved.

¹¹ But the meek shall inherit the land, and shall delight in abundance of peace.

¹⁸ The days of the upright are numbered by the Lord, and their heritage will be for ever. ¹⁹ In time of troubles they shall not be shamed, and in days of famine they shall be plentifully fed.

⁹ Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth.

¹ Praise Yah! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD; he takes great delight in his commands.

¹³ He will bless those who fear the LORD, both small and great.

³² for the waywardness of the simple ones will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. ³³ But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm."

²¹ Misfortune pursues sinners, but prosperity rewards the righteous.

¹⁴ I know that whatever God does, it shall be forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it; and God does it so that they fear before Him.

¹⁶ This also is a grievous illness. Exactly as he came, so he will go. What profit does he gain for all his toil for the wind?

¹⁵ In the days of my vanity I took a view of all classes. Here is a righteous man perishing for his righteous act: there a wicked man continuing in his wickedness.

¹⁸ It is good to take hold of the one and also must not let go of the other; for whoever fears God will hold both of them secure.

¹⁰ Say you to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. ¹¹ Woe to the wicked. Disaster is upon them; for the work of his hands will be done to him.

¹³ Therefore this is what the Sovereign Sovereign LORD says: My servants will eat, but you will go hungry. My servants will drink, but you will go thirsty. My servants will rejoice, but you will be put to shame! ¹⁴ My servants will sing out of the joy of their hearts, but you will cry out from anguish of heart and wail in brokenness of spirit.

²⁰ "Never again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his years. He who dies at a hundred will be thought a mere youth. The sinner who reaches a hundred will be considered accursed. ²¹ "They will build houses and dwell in them. They will plant vineyards and eat their fruit. ²² "No longer will they build houses and others live in them, or plant and others eat. For as the days of a tree, so will be the days of my people. My chosen ones will long enjoy the works of their hands. ²³ "They will not toil in vain or bear children doomed to misfortune. For they will be a people blessed by the LORD, they and their descendants with them. ²⁴ "Before they call I will answer! While they are still speaking I will hear.

³⁴ Then the King will say to those at His right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, take possession of the kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world.

⁴¹ Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. ⁴² For I was hungry, and you gave me nothing to eat: I was thirsty, and you gave me nothing to drink: ⁴³ I was a stranger and you did not take me in; I was naked and you did not clothe me; I was sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ ⁴⁴ Then they will answer, 'Lord, when did we ever see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or needing clothes, or sick, or in prison, and did not wait on you?' ⁴⁵ Then the King will answer, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.’ ⁴⁶ And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

⁵⁰ His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation.

⁵ But because of your hard and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

²² What if God, intending to show His wrath and make His power known, bore with great patience the vessels of His wrath, prepared for destruction?

⁹ if all this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.

⁶ "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and they come to an end without hope. ⁷ Remember that my life is a breath; my eye will not return to see good.

² "He springs up like a flower and fades away. He is like a fleeting shadow and does not endure.

⁵ "The lamp of the wicked is snuffed out. The flame of his fire shall not shine.

⁵ "The success of the wicked is brief and the joy of the godless lasts but a moment.

³⁰ that the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity, that they are led forth to the day of wrath?

⁵ The LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked and the one who loves violence his soul hates.

⁵ Behold, you have made my days mere handbreadths. My lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely every man stands as a breath. Selah.

²³ But you, O God, will bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days, but I will trust in you.

⁴ Man is like the breath: his days are like a passing shadow.

¹¹ Woe to the wicked. Disaster is upon them; for the work of his hands will be done to him.

¹³ This sin will be to you like a crack in a high wall, causing its fall suddenly and in a minute.

²¹ "There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked."

¹⁸ When you return, you will see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not."

⁴⁹ So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous ⁵⁰ and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

²⁹ And will come out--those who have done good rising to Life, and those who have lived evil lives rising for condemnation.

¹⁴ You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

³ And in their greed they will exploit you with false words; from long ago their condemnation has not been idle, and their destruction has not been asleep.

²² "It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked. ²³ If a calamity causes sudden death, he'll mock at the despair of the innocent. ²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; He covers the faces of its judges. If it is not He, then who is it?

⁷ Why do the wicked live? They grow old, and become mighty in power.

¹⁷ How often is the lamp of the wicked put out, and their calamity comes on them! He shares out pangs in His anger; ¹⁸ "How often are they like straw before the wind, and like chaff that the storm carries away? ¹⁹ [Ye say], God lays up his iniquity for his sons. Let him recompense it to himself that he may know it. ²⁰ Let his own eyes see his destruction. Let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty. ²¹ For what does he care for his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off? ²² Can anyone teach knowledge to God, since he himself judges high ones? ²³ One dies in his full strength, wholly secure and at ease; ²⁴ His sides are full of milk, his bones are wet with marrow. ²⁵ Another dieth with bitterness of soul, having never tasted any thing good. ²⁶ They lie together in the soil, And worms cover them both. ²⁷ "Look, I know your thoughts, the devices with which you would wrong me. ²⁸ You ask, 'Where is the noble person's house?' and 'Where are the tents where the wicked live?' ²⁹ Have ye not asked the wayfarers? and do ye not regard their tokens: ³⁰ that the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity, that they are led forth to the day of wrath? ³¹ Who denounces his way to his face? And who repays him for what he has done? ³² Yet is he carried to the graves, and watch is kept over the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley will be sweet to him. All men will draw after him, as there were innumerable before him. ³⁴ How then, can you console me so worthlessly? What is left of your answers is treachery."

²¹ "They prey on the barren woman, and does no favors for widows. ²² Yet God preserves the mighty by his power. He rises up who has no assurance of life. ²³ He gives them security, and they rest in it. His eyes are on their ways. ²⁴ They're exalted momentarily, but then they are gone; they are humbled, just like all the others. They are cut down like heads of corn. ²⁵ "And if it is not so, then who can prove me a liar and reduce my word to nothing?"

³ For I was envious of the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

¹² Look, these are the wicked. Being always at ease, they increase in riches. ¹³ Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure, and washed my hands in innocence. ¹⁴ For all day long I have been plagued, and punished every morning.

⁴ And I saw all labor, and all the diligent work, that this is a man's envy from his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

⁸ There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth. For whom then, do I labor, and deprive my soul of enjoyment? This also is vanity, yes, it is a miserable business.

¹ I considered all this in my heart and declared that the righteous and their works are in the hand of God. No man knows if love or hatred awaits him in the future. ² The same fate comes to everyone: to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good and to the wicked, to the clean and to the unclean, to those who sacrifice and to those who do not sacrifice. As with the good man, so also to the sinner; as with those who swear an oath, so also those who fear oaths. ³ There is a tragedy that infects everything that happens on earth: a common event happens to everyone. In fact, the hearts of human beings are full of evil. Madness remains in their hearts while they live, and afterwards they join the dead.

⁵ There is an evil I have seen under the sun— it is an error that proceeds from a ruler!

¹ You are righteous, O LORD, when I contend with you. Yet I would reason the case with you. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why are all those at ease who deal very treacherously?

¹⁵ Now we call the proud blessed; indeed, evildoers prosper. They even tempt God and escape.'

²⁴ There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink, and delight in his work. This also I saw was from the hand of God.

¹² I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice, and to do good as long as they live. ¹³ And also every man shall eat and drink, and see the good in all his labor; it is the gift of God.

¹⁸ This is what I have seen: it is good and fair for a man to take meat and drink and to have joy in all his work under the sun, all the days of his life which God has given him; that is his reward.

⁷ Go, eat your bread with mirth, and drink your wine with a joyful heart; for now God has favorably accepted your works. ⁸ Always be clothed in white garments, and never let your head lack oil! ⁹ See life with a wife whom you love all the days of your vain life, Which He gives to you under the sun--all your vain days, For this is your portion in life And in your toil that you are toiling under the sun."

³ They forbid people to get married and require them to avoid [eating] certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and [fully] know the truth. ⁴ For everything God created is good, and nothing should be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,

¹⁷ Charge the rich of this world not to be arrogant, nor to set their hopes on such an uncertain thing as riches, but on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

⁴⁰ This was my situation: in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep fled from my eyes.

² It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil, for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

¹³ I applied my mind to seek and to search by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. It is a grievous task God has given to humans.

²³ All his days are sorrow, and his work is full of grief. Even in the night his heart has no rest. This again is vanity.

¹² The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, whether he eats little or much; but the abundance of the rich will not allow him to sleep.

⁷ for he knows not what becomes; for who can tell him when it became?

⁹ All this have I seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man rules over another to his own hurt.

⁹ "He does great things that we cannot understand and miracles that we cannot count.

⁷ "Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty? ⁸ "They are higher than the heavens. What can you do? They are deeper than the depths of the grave. What can you know? ⁹ "Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.

⁵ O LORD my God, Many are the wonders that you have done and your thoughts toward us. None can compare with you. If I would declare and teach about them, they would be too numerous to report.

¹⁶ When I tried to understand this, it was too painful for me,

²⁴ How manifold are Thy works, O LORD! In wisdom hast Thou made them all; the earth is full of Thy creatures.

³ I have not learned wisdom, nor the knowledge of the holy. ⁴ Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in the hollow of his hand? Who has wrapped water in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name and what is the name of his child? For surely you know.

²³ All this I have tested by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me. ²⁴ Whatever it is, it's far off and most profound. Who can attain it?

⁵ Just as you do not know how the path of the wind goes, nor how the bones of a fetus form in a mother's womb, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.

²⁸ "Do you not know? Have you not heard? the LORD IS THE EVERLASTING GOD, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and no one can measure (find out) his understanding.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
