¹ There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is heavy on men: ² God gives a man wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing his heart desires; yet God does not enable him to enjoy it—instead someone else ends up enjoying it. This is vanity—indeed, it is a grievous ill! ³ A man can have a hundred children and live many years. If he does not enjoy prosperity and have a decent burial, a stillborn child is better off then he. ⁴ for it comes in vanity, and departs in darkness, and its name is covered with darkness. ⁵ Moreover, it neither saw the sun nor knew anything; Thus this had more rest than that man, ⁶ "Even though he lives a thousand years twice over, yet he has seen no good. Do not all go to one place?" ⁷ All of a man's toil is for his mouth— yet his appetite is never satisfied. ⁸ For what advantage has the wise more than the fool? What has the poor man, that knows how to walk before the living? ⁹ Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind. ¹⁰ That which is hath already been named; and what man is, is known, and that he cannot contend with him that is mightier than he. ¹¹ ⌊Increasing words only multiplies futility⌋, how does that profit anyone? ¹² For who knows what is good for a man in his life during the few days of his fleeting life, which are fleeting as a shadow? For who can tell anyone what will happen in the future under the sun?

¹³ There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: wealth hoarded by its owner to his harm.

⁷ because the LORD your God is bringing you to a good land a land with rivers and deep springs flowing to the valleys and hills. ⁸ a land of wheat and barley and vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey, ⁹ a land without scarcity. You'll eat food in it and lack nothing. It's a land where its rocks are iron and you can dig copper from its mountains." ¹⁰ "When you have eaten and are satisfied, bless the LORD your God for the good land that he has given you.

³³ A people whom you don't know will devour what your land and labor produces. You'll be only oppressed and discouraged continually

⁴³ The foreigner who is among you will mount up above you higher and higher, and you will come down lower and lower.

¹⁰ When you get there, you will find an unsuspecting people, and the land is large. God has given it to you, a place where there is no lack of anything that is in the earth.

¹³ And I have also given you what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there will not be any among the kings like you all your days.

²⁵ The LORD magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed on him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.

²⁸ He died at a very old age, wealthy and respected, and his son Solomon succeeded him as king.

¹¹ Then God said to Solomon, "Because this was with your heart and you did not ask for wealth, possessions, honor, and the lives of your enemies, and also did not ask for long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge that you might judge my people over whom I have made you king,

⁹ Their houses are safe without fear, and the rod of God is not upon them. ¹⁰ Their bulls breed without fail. Their cows calve, and do not miscarry. ¹¹ They send forth their children by flocks, and their sons lead the dance. ¹² They sing to the tambourine and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the flute. ¹³ They spend their days in prosperity, and in a moment they go down to Sheol ¹⁴ "They say to God: 'Leave us alone! We do not desire to know your ways.' ¹⁵ "Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what do we gain if we pray to him?

¹⁴ from men by your hand, Yahweh, from men of the world, whose portion is in this life. You fill the belly of your cherished ones. Your sons have plenty, and they store up wealth for their children.

⁶ Surely every man walks in a shadow. Surely they are in an uproar in vain. He heaps up and does not know who will gather them.

⁷ Their eyes bulge with fat, their minds pass the limits of conceit.

⁴ I made me great works, I built me houses, and planted vineyards, ⁵ I made for myself gardens and parks, and I planted all sorts of fruit trees in them. ⁶ I made water pools from which to water the young trees. ⁷ I acquired male and female servants, and they gave birth to sons and daughters in my house. I had great wealth of herds and flocks, more than all who were in Jerusalem before me. ⁸ I also gathered silver and gold to myself, and the treasure of kings and of the provinces. I got men singers and women singers for myself, and the delights of the sons of men, a wife and very many wives. ⁹ And I became great and increased more than all who were before me in Jerusalem; also my wisdom stayed with me. ¹⁰ I neither withheld anything from my eyes that they desired, nor did I deprive any pleasure from my heart. My heart rejoiced in all my toil, for this was my reward from all my toil.

⁴ And I saw all labor, and all the diligent work, that this is a man's envy from his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

⁸ There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth. For whom then, do I labor, and deprive my soul of enjoyment? This also is vanity, yes, it is a miserable business.

¹⁶ This also is a grievous illness. Exactly as he came, so he will go. What profit does he gain for all his toil for the wind?

¹⁹ Every man also to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat of it, and to accept his lot, and to rejoice in his labor; this is the gift of God.

² Our inheritance has been turned to aliens, our houses to foreigners.

¹⁸ O king, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honor.

⁹ Foreigners devour his strength, and he does not know it; mold is also sprinkled upon him, and he does not know it.

¹⁹ Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ ²⁰ But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul will be demanded of you. Then who will have all you have prepared?'

⁵ Then Esau lifted up his eyes and saw the women and the children and said, "Who are these with you?" And he said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant."

⁹ He answered: The days of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty years, few, and evil, and they are not come up to the days of the pilgrimage of my fathers.

²⁰ Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife and say, "May the LORD give you descendants from this woman in place of the one she dedicated to the LORD." Then they would return to their home. ²¹ the LORD took note of Hannah, and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters, while the young man Samuel grew up with the LORD.

³⁵ But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing left of her except her skull, her feet, and the palms of her hands.

¹ Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria, and Jehu wrote letters, and he sent them to Samaria to the officials of Jezreel, to the elders and to the guardians of Ahab, saying,

⁵ And of all my sons, for the LORD has given me many sons, He has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the LORD, over Israel.

²¹ And Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom more than all his wives and concubines (for he took eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and he fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters).

¹¹ And Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and his many sons, and all to which the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.

¹⁰ Then they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. And the king's fury subsided.

¹⁴ So the king ordered it to be done in this way; an edict was issued in Susa, and they hanged the ten sons of Haman. ¹⁵ The Jews in Susa assembled again on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and killed 300 men in Susa, but they did not lay their hand on the plunder.

¹⁶ »Why was I not hidden in the ground like a stillborn child, like an infant who never saw the light of day?

⁸ Like a slug melting away as it goes along; Like the stillborn of a woman, they will fail to perceive the sun."

⁴ Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth. ⁵ Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them. They shall not be put to shame when they speak with their enemies in the gate.

⁶ Children's children are a crown of the aged, and the fathers are the honour of the children.

³ Yea, better than both is he who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

¹⁷ All his days he also eats in darkness, he is frustrated, and has sickness and wrath. ¹⁸ This is what I have seen: it is good and fair for a man to take meat and drink and to have joy in all his work under the sun, all the days of his life which God has given him; that is his reward. ¹⁹ Every man also to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat of it, and to accept his lot, and to rejoice in his labor; this is the gift of God.

¹⁹ But you are thrown from your grave like a despised branch, like the covering of the slain, those pierced by the sword, those who go down into the stones of the Pit, like a dead body trampled under foot. ²⁰ You will not join them in burial, because you have destroyed your land. You have killed your people. The offspring of evildoers will not be mentioned forever.

² They'll be spread out to the sun, the moon, and all the stars of the heavens, which they loved and served, and which they followed, consulted, and worshiped. Their bones won't be collected, nor will they be buried. They'll be like dung on the surface of the ground.

¹⁹ He will be buried with the burial of a donkey. He will be dragged away and thrown outside the gates of Jerusalem.

³⁰ Therefore, this is what the LORD says concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah, 'He will have no one to sit on the throne of David, and his corpse will be thrown out to rot during the heat of the day and the frost of the night.

²⁴ The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed. It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

¹³ Let his descendants be cut off. Let their name be blotted out in the next generation.

¹⁰ for it did not shut the doors of the womb on me to hide trouble from my eyes. ¹¹ "Why did I not perish at birth, and die as I came from the womb? ¹² "Why were there knees to receive me and breasts that I might be nursed? ¹³ "For now I would be lying down in peace. I would be asleep and at rest.

¹ Man, born of woman, is of few days, and full of trouble.

⁷ Indeed, we are consumed by your anger and terrified by your wrath. ⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. ⁹ For all our days pass away in Your wrath; we finish our years like a murmur.

⁵ Adam lived a total of 930 years and then died.

²³ Enoch lived a total of 365 years. ²⁴ Enoch walked with God. Then he was no more, because God took (moved) him away.

²¹ And he said, Naked I came out of my mother's womb and naked I will return there. the LORD gave and the LORD has taken away, praise the name of the LORD.

⁷ Remember that my life is a breath; my eye will not return to see good.

²³ "Yes, I know that you will bring me to death, to the house appointed for all living.

⁶ Many say, “Who will show us any good?” Yahweh, let the light of your face shine on us. ⁷ You have put gladness in my heart more than when their grain and their wine abound.

¹² What man soever desireth life and loveth to see good days:

²⁰ All go to one place; all were from dust, and all turned back to dust.

³ A man can have a hundred children and live many years. If he does not enjoy prosperity and have a decent burial, a stillborn child is better off then he.

⁷ and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

²⁰ "Never again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his years. He who dies at a hundred will be thought a mere youth. The sinner who reaches a hundred will be considered accursed.

²² "No longer will they build houses and others live in them, or plant and others eat. For as the days of a tree, so will be the days of my people. My chosen ones will long enjoy the works of their hands.

⁶ And he will be like a juniper in the wilderness, and he will not see when good comes, and he will dwell in the parched places in the desert, in a land of salt flats, where no one lives.

²⁷ Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment,

¹⁷ He said to Adam: "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. ¹⁸ It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants from the fields. ¹⁹ By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread, until your return to the ground. For from it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

²⁶ The life of a worker works for him, for his hunger urges him.

¹⁰ Whoever loves money is not satisfied with money, and whoever loves wealth is not satisfied with profit. This also is vanity!

²⁵ Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

¹⁹ Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry!”’

²⁷ Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”

⁶ But godliness with contentment is great gain. ⁷ For we bring nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. ⁸ But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.

¹ Abram was ninety-nine years old. the LORD appeared to him and said: "I am God Almighty. Walk before me and be blameless.

² I will be careful to live a blameless life. When will you come to me? I will walk within my house with a blameless heart.

⁹ I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

¹ Better a poor man who walks with integrity than a fool whose lips are perverse.

¹⁴ The wise man, his eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness. And I also perceived that one event happeneth to them all. ¹⁵ Then I said in my heart: "As it happens to the fool, so it will happen to me. Why have I been so wise?" Then I said in my heart: "This also is vanity." ¹⁶ For neither the wise nor the fool will be long remembered, since in days to come everything will be forgotten. The wise man dies the same way as the fool, does he not?

¹¹ When good things increase, those who consume them increase. So what is the advantage to their owners except to see them?

⁶ They were both upright in the sight of God, blamelessly observing all the Lord's commands and requirements.

¹⁷ Charge the rich of this world not to be arrogant, nor to set their hopes on such an uncertain thing as riches, but on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

⁷ "If my steps have turned from the path, if my heart has been led by my eyes, or if my hands have been defiled,

¹⁵ The leach has two daughters: 'Give, give'. There are three things that are never satisfied; four that don't say, 'Enough:' ¹⁶ The nether world; and a barren womb; the earth which is not satisfied with water; and the fire which never saith, Enough.

² "Utterly pointless," says the Teacher. "Absolutely pointless; everything is pointless."

¹⁴ I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and look, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

¹¹ Yet when I faced all my deeds that my hands had done, And the toil that I had toiled in doing them, Behold, the whole was vanity and a grazing on wind, And there was nothing of advantage under the sun."

²² For what does a man have of all his labor and of the striving of his heart, in which he labors under the sun? ²³ All his days are sorrow, and his work is full of grief. Even in the night his heart has no rest. This again is vanity. ²⁴ There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink, and delight in his work. This also I saw was from the hand of God.

¹² I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice, and to do good as long as they live. ¹³ And also every man shall eat and drink, and see the good in all his labor; it is the gift of God.

¹⁸ This is what I have seen: it is good and fair for a man to take meat and drink and to have joy in all his work under the sun, all the days of his life which God has given him; that is his reward.

⁹ Rejoice, young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

²⁰ For long ago you broke your yoke and tore up your bonds. And you said, I will not transgress, when on every high hill and under every green tree you lay down like a harlot.

⁹ But the LORD God called to the man: "Where are you?"

³ If he desires to contend with Him, He shall not answer him one time out of a thousand. ⁴ He is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has resisted him and succeeded?

³² For he is not a man, like me, that I could answer him, that we should enter together into a contest.

¹ Man, born of woman, is of few days, and full of trouble. ² "He springs up like a flower and fades away. He is like a fleeting shadow and does not endure. ³ "Do you look on such a person? Will you bring him before you for judgment? ⁴ "Who can bring what is pure from the impure? No one!

¹³ "Why do you complain to him that he answers none of man's words?

² Shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct him? Let him that disputes with God answer this.

⁶ I said you are gods; and all sons of the Most High: ⁷ However, you will die like men, and you will fall like one of the princes."

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass: his beautiful growth is like the flower of the field.

⁹ Whatever has happened, will happen again; whatever has been done, will be done again. There is nothing new on earth. ¹⁰ Is there anything of which one may say:See this, it is new? It has already occurred In eons that were before us? ¹¹ There is no memory of former things. Those who follow will not remember those who are yet to come.

¹⁵ What is—it already was, and what will be—it already is, for God will do what he has done.

⁹ Woe to him who fights with the One who formed him! A potsherd among the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to its former, What are you making? Or does your work say, He has no hands? ¹⁰ Woe unto him that says unto his father, What do you beget? or to the woman, What have you brought forth?

¹⁹ Look, like a lion he comes up from the thickets of the Jordan to a pastureland by a constantly flowing stream. So I will chase him away hurriedly from it. And whoever is chosen I will appoint over it. For who is like me, and who can summon me? And who is this, the shepherd who can stand before me?"

¹⁹ One of you will say to me, “Then why does God still find fault? For who can resist His will?” ²⁰ But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to Him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?”

⁶ Therefore pride is their necklace and violence covers them like a garment.

⁶ The wind goes to the south and goes around to the north; around and around it goes, and on its circuit the wind returns. ⁷ All the streams flow to the sea, but the sea is never full; to the place where the streams flow, there they continue to flow. ⁸ All things are wearisome; man is not able to tell. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. ⁹ Whatever has happened, will happen again; whatever has been done, will be done again. There is nothing new on earth.

¹⁷ I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind. ¹⁸ For in much wisdom is much vexation, And he who adds knowledge adds pain."

³ I also explored the effects of indulging my flesh with wine. My mind guiding me with wisdom, I investigated folly so that I might discover what is good under heaven for humans to do during the days of their lives. ⁴ I made me great works, I built me houses, and planted vineyards, ⁵ I made for myself gardens and parks, and I planted all sorts of fruit trees in them. ⁶ I made water pools from which to water the young trees. ⁷ I acquired male and female servants, and they gave birth to sons and daughters in my house. ¹⁹ What happens to the sons of men also happens to animals. As the one dies so the other dies. Yes, they all have one breath so that a man has no advantage over animals. For all is vanity.

¹ And I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors was power, and they had no comforter. ² So I commended the dead who had already died as being happier than the living who are still alive. ³ Yea, better than both is he who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun. ⁴ And I saw all labor, and all the diligent work, that this is a man's envy from his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

¹⁶ There is no end to all the people, to all who were before them; and the last shall not rejoice in him; for this also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

⁷ For in many dreams and vanities, there are many words; Therefore fear the One, Elohim."

¹ Ephraim herds the wind and is pursuing the east wind all day long; he multiplies deception and violence and he makes a treaty with Assyria, and oil is brought to Egypt.

¹⁵ For we are aliens and vagrants in your presence, as were all of our ancestors. Our days on the earth pass away like shadows, and we have no hope.

⁹ "After all we were born only yesterday and know nothing, and our days on earth are a mere shadow.

² "He springs up like a flower and fades away. He is like a fleeting shadow and does not endure.

²¹ »His sons are honored and he does not know it. They are brought low and he does not see it.

⁶ Many say, “Who will show us any good?” Yahweh, let the light of your face shine on us.

⁵ Yahweh assigned my portion and my cup. You made my lot secure.

¹⁵ By contrast, I in righteousness shall see your face. Upon awakening I will be satisfied seeing your form.

⁵ Behold, you have made my days mere handbreadths. My lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely every man stands as a breath. Selah. ⁶ Surely every man walks in a shadow. Surely they are in an uproar in vain. He heaps up and does not know who will gather them.

⁴ He chooses our inheritance for us, the glory of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.

⁴⁷ Remember how transient is my life, For what futility have You created all the sons of humanity?

¹⁰ The days of our years are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty years; yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for it passes quickly, and we fly away. ¹¹ Who knows the power of your anger and your wrath according to the fear that is due to you? ¹² So teach us to number our days so that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

¹¹ My days are like a lengthened shadow and I wither away like grass.

²³ I fade away like an evening shadow. I am shaken off like a locust.

⁴ Man is like the breath: his days are like a passing shadow.

³ I also explored the effects of indulging my flesh with wine. My mind guiding me with wisdom, I investigated folly so that I might discover what is good under heaven for humans to do during the days of their lives.

²² So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than that he rejoices in his works Since that is his portion; For who can bring him to see what shall come after him?

⁷ for he knows not what becomes; for who can tell him when it became?

¹³ but not good with the wicked: he prolongs not his days as a shadow; because he awes not at the face of Elohim.

⁶ Furthermore, their love, their hate, and their envy have been long lost. Never again will they have a part in what happens on earth.

¹³ Now that all has been heard, here is the final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

²⁴ I said to myself, "the LORD is my heritage. For this reason I will hope in him." ²⁵ the LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. ²⁶ Teth It is good to wait quietly in the salvation of the LORD. ²⁷ It is good for a man that he bear the yoke while he is young.

⁸ He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

¹⁴ You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
