¹⁵ On the fourth day they said to Samson's wife, Entice your husband to tell us the riddle, or we will burn you and your father's house with fire. Have you called us here to mock us?

²⁶ But Saul said nothing on that day, for he thought, "Something happened to him. He is not ceremonially clean; surely he is not clean." ²⁷ But the next day, on the second day of the new moon, David's place was empty, and so Saul said to his son Jonathan, "Why didn't Jesse's son come to the feast, either yesterday or today?" ²⁸ Jonathan answered Saul: "David earnestly asked permission of me to go to Bethlehem. ²⁹ He said, 'Please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in the city. My brother has commanded me to be there. Now, if I have found favour in your eyes, please let me go away and see my brothers'. That is why he has not come to the king's table. ³⁰ Then Saul's anger burned against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse rebellious woman, don't I know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother's nakedness? ³¹ As long as Jesse's son lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established! Now send someone and bring David to me. He's a dead man!" ³² And Jonathan answered Saul, Why is he to die? What has he done? ³³ Then Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him. So Jonathan knew that his father had decided to kill David.

⁷ Saul said to them, Listen now, you Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse give each of you fields and vineyards? Will he make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds? ⁸ Is that why all of you have conspired against me so that there is no-one who tells me when my son makes a treaty with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you who is sorry for me or tells me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as he does today?

¹⁶ And the king said, You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and your father's house. ¹⁷ The king said to the guards who stood around him, Turn and kill the priests of the LORD because they have sided with David, and because they knew that he fled, and didn't tell me. But the servants of the king wouldn't put forth their hand to strike the priests of the LORD. ¹⁸ Then the king said to Doeg, "You turn and attack the priests." Doeg the Edomite turned and attacked the priests. That day he killed eighty-five men who carry the linen ephod.

¹⁰ Nabal answered David's servants, Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants who break away from their masters these days. ¹¹ Should I take my food, my water, and my meat that I've slaughtered for my shearers and give it to men who came from who knows where?"

⁴¹ Suddenly, all the men of Israel were coming to the king. They said to the king, "Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen away and brought the king and his household over the Jordan, with all the men of David?"

²⁷ He said, “If the LORD doesn’t help you, where could I get help for you? From of the threshing floor, or from the wine press?”

³¹ He said, "May God do to me and more also! if the head of Shaphat's son Elisha remains on his shoulders today!"

⁹ If a wise man goes to court with a foolish man, the fool rages or scoffs, and there is no peace.

⁷ Then Herod called the Magi secretly and learned from them the exact time the star had appeared. ⁸ He also sent them to Bethlehem, telling them, "Go and make a careful search for the child, and when you have found him report to me, so that I may go and worship him too."

¹⁶ When Herod saw that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was filled with rage. Sending orders, he put to death all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, according to the time he had learned from the Magi.

² But some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

¹¹ But they were filled with rage, and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

³⁸ But the Pharisee, noticing that He did not first wash before the meal, was critical.

⁵³ As Jesus was leaving, the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose him fiercely, interrogating him about many things. ⁵⁴ waiting to catch Him in something He might say.

¹⁰ So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,

²⁸ “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us responsible for this man’s blood.” ²⁹ Peter and the other Apostles replied, "We must obey God rather than man. ³⁰ The God of our fathers raised Jesuswhom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. ³¹ God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior, to give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. ³² We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him." ³³ When they heard this, they were furious, and wanted to kill them.

⁹ But resistance arose from what was known as the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and men from the provinces of Cilicia and Asia. They began to argue with Stephen, ¹⁰ but they could not stand up to his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke. ¹¹ Then they prompted some men to say, “We heard Stephen speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God.”

⁵⁴ When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. ⁵⁵ But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. ⁵⁶ “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” ⁵⁷ At this they covered their ears, cried out in a loud voice, and rushed together at him. ⁵⁸ They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. ⁵⁹ While they were stoning him, Stephen appealed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

²⁴ For a certain silversmith named Demetrius who makes silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little work to the craftsmen, ²⁵ They gathered together along with similar related workmen, and said: "Sirs, You know we receive a good income from this business. ²⁶ And as you see and hear, not only in Ephesus, but in nearly the whole province of Asia, Paul has persuaded a great number of people to turn away. He says that man-made gods are no gods at all. ²⁷ There is danger not only that our business will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited and her majesty deposed—she who is worshiped by all the province of Asia and the whole world.” ²⁸ When they heard this, they became furious and began to shout, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
