¹ "Be careful to observe every command that I'm instructing you today, in order that you may live, increase, and enter and take possession of the land that the LORD promised by an oath to your ancestors. ² "Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way these 40 years in the desert, to humble and test you in order to make known what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. ³ He humbled you and allowed you to suffer hunger, and fed you with manna, which you didn't know, neither did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man does not live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD. ⁴ Your clothing did not wear out on you, and your feet did not swell during these forty years. ⁵ Be convinced in your heart that as a father disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you. ⁶ Observe the commands of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him, ⁷ because the LORD your God is bringing you to a good land a land with rivers and deep springs flowing to the valleys and hills. ⁸ a land of wheat and barley and vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey, ⁹ a land without scarcity. You'll eat food in it and lack nothing. It's a land where its rocks are iron and you can dig copper from its mountains." ¹⁰ "When you have eaten and are satisfied, bless the LORD your God for the good land that he has given you. ¹¹ Be careful! Otherwise, you will forget the LORD your God by failing to keep his commands, ordinances, and statutes that I'm commanding you this day. ¹² Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you have built beautiful houses and lived in them, ¹³ and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; ¹⁴ then your heart might be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; ¹⁵ who led you through the great and dreadful wilderness, with burning serpent, and scorpion, and thirsty ground where no water is; who brought you water out of the flinty rock; ¹⁶ and fed you in the desert with manna that neither you nor your ancestors had known, to humble and test you so that things go well with you later. ¹⁷ Say not then, in your hearts, My power and the strength of my hands have got me this wealth. ¹⁸ But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as it is today. ¹⁹ If you neglect the LORD your God, follow other gods, and serve and worship them, I testify to you today that you will certainly be destroyed. ²⁰ As with the nations that the LORD is destroying before you, so you shall perish because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God.

¹ And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and to the ordinances, which I teach you, to do them, that you may live and go in and possess the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, gives you.

³² Be careful to do what the LORD your God has commanded you. Never turn to the right or to the left.

⁴ You have commanded your precepts, that we should fully obey them. ⁵ Oh that my ways were steadfast to obey your statutes! ⁶ Then I would not be ashamed when I look to all your commands.

¹ Now then, brothers, you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God, as in fact you are doing. We ask and encourage you in the Lord to do so even more. ² For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

¹ After these things, God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”

²⁵ And he cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There he made a rule and regulation for them, and there he tested them.

⁴ the LORD said to Moses: "I am going to cause food to rain down from the sky for all of you. The people must go out every day and gather enough for that day. In this way I can test them to find out if they will follow my instructions.

³ On the first day of the eleventh month, in the fortieth year, Moses spoke to the Israelites about everything that the LORD had commanded him concerning them.

³³ »He went ahead of you to find places for you to camp. He offered fire by night and cloud by day to show you the way you should go.

⁷ For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand; He has known your walking through this great wilderness; these forty years the LORD your God has been with you and you have lacked nothing.

¹⁸ Do not be afraid of them; remember well what the LORD thy God did with Pharaoh and with all Egypt;

¹⁶ and fed you in the desert with manna that neither you nor your ancestors had known, to humble and test you so that things go well with you later.

³ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

⁵ For forty years I have been your guide through the waste land: your clothing has not become old on your backs, or your shoes on your feet.

²⁵ But Hezekiah didn't render again according to the grace done to him. His heart was lifted up; therefore there was wrath on him, and on Judah and Jerusalem. ²⁶ And Hezekiah was humbled for the pride of his heart, he and the people of Jerusalem, and the wrath of the LORD did not come on them in the days of Hezekiah.

³¹ When the leaders of Babylon sent ambassadors to ask him about the miraculous sign that had happened in the land, God left him. God did this to test him, to find out everything that was in Hezekiah's heart.

¹² But, in his distress, he appeased the face of the LORD his God,—and humbled himself greatly, before the God of his fathers;

¹⁹ And his prayer, and how he responded to him, all his sin and his unfaithful acts, and the places where he built the high places and set up Asherahs and idols before he humbled himself, behold, they are written in the words of the seers.

¹⁷ that turn man from wrongdoing and keep him from pride.

⁵ "My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. ⁶ Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes."

¹¹ I will remember the deeds of Yah. Surely I will remember your wonders from long ago.

⁷ In a time of need you called out and I delivered you; I answered you from the dark thundercloud; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. [Interlude]

⁷ Our fathers in Egypt did not understand your wonders. They did not remember your abundant kindnesses. But they rebelled by the Red Sea.

¹⁶ to him, who led his people through the desert; for his mercy endureth forever;

³ The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold: and the LORD tries hearts.

¹⁷ And every man shall be brought low, and the pride of men shall fall: and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things, and incurable; who can know it? ¹⁰ "I, the LORD, search the heart and examine the mind (inner man). I give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds.

¹⁰ And I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.

² "But who can endure the day of his coming? And who will stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire, and like launderer's soap; ³ "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver. He will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will offer to the LORD offerings in righteousness.

¹⁴ I tell you, this man, rather than the Pharisee, went home justified. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

²⁵ He did not need any testimony about man, for He knew what was in a man.

¹¹ Therefore remember that formerly you who are Gentiles in the flesh and called uncircumcised by the so-called circumcision (that done in the body by human hands)— ¹² that at that time you were apart from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and strangers to the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

³ because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.

⁶ But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

¹⁰ Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will raise you up.

⁷ so that your tested faith, much more precious than gold that perishes though tested by fire, may be found to your praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed,

⁵ Young men, in the same way, submit yourselves to your elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” ⁶ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time,

¹² Therefore I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. ¹³ I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of my body,

¹ Beloved, this is now my second letter to you. Both of them are reminders to stir you to wholesome thinking ² to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the commandment of our Lord and Savior spoken through your apostles.

²³ Then I will strike her children dead, and all the churches will know that I am the One who searches minds and hearts, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

² all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron. ³ The Israelites said to them: "If only the LORD had allowed us to die in Egypt! There we sat by our pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted! You brought us out into this desert to let us all starve to death!"

¹² "I have heard the grumblings of the Israelites. Speak to them, saying, 'At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be full with bread, and you will know that I am the LORD your God.'" ¹³ Later that evening quail came up and covered the camp, and then in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. ¹⁴ After the dew had gone, the desert was covered with thin flakes that looked like frost. ¹⁵ When the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, "What is it?" For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, "It is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat." ¹⁶ This is what the LORD has commanded: "Each man should gather according to what he can eat. You shall take two quarts for each person in your tent." ¹⁷ The Israelites did this, some gathering much, some little. ¹⁸ They measured it. Those who gathered much did not have too much. Some who gathered less did not have too little. Each had gathered just what he needed. ¹⁹ Then Moses said to them, "No one is to leave any of it until morning." ²⁰ Some of them did not listen to Moses and saved part of it. The next morning it was full of worms and smelled rotten. Moses was angry with them. ²¹ Every morning each one gathered as much as he needed. When the sun grew hot, what was left on the ground melted. ²² On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one; and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. ²³ and he told them, "This is what the LORD said: 'Tomorrow is a Sabbath observance, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil, and put aside whatever remains to be kept for yourselves until morning.'" ²⁴ And they laid it up until the morning, as Moses commanded. And it did not stink and no maggot was in it. ²⁵ And Moses said, Eat that today, because today is a Sabbath to the LORD. Today you will not find it in the field. ²⁶ For six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there won't be any." ²⁷ And it came to pass, that some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, and they found none. ²⁸ Then the LORD said to Moses, "How long will you people refuse to keep my commandments and my instructions? ²⁹ You see that the LORD has given you the Sabbath, and so on the sixth day he gives you food for two days. Let each person stay where he is; let no one leave his place on the seventh day." ³⁰ So the people rested on the seventh day. ³¹ The Israelites named it "manna." It was white like coriander seed, and tasted like a wafer made with honey. ³² And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD has commanded: Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations; that they may see the bread that I gave you to eat in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt. ³³ And Moses said to Aaron, Take a pot and put an omer full of manna in it, and lay it up before the LORD, to be kept for your generations. ³⁴ As the Lord commanded Moses so Aaron laid it up before the testimony that it might be kept. ³⁵ The Israelites ate manna for 40 years until they came to a land where they could settle. They ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan.

³ Trust in the LORD, and do good. Dwell in the land, and enjoy safe pasture.

²³ Yet he commanded the skies above, and opened the doors of heaven. ²⁴ and rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven. ²⁵ Man ate the bread of angels. He sent them food to the full.

²⁷ They all wait for you to give them their food at the proper time. ²⁸ You give to them; they gather. You open your hand; they are satisfied with good. ²⁹ You hide your face, they are terrified. You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.

⁴⁰ They asked, and he brought quail, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven.

⁴ But he answered, "It is written, 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.' "

⁴ Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man shall not live on bread alone.' "

²⁹ And do not be concerned about what you will eat or drink. Do not worry about it. ³⁰ For the nations of the world strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them.

³ They all ate the same spiritual food

⁵ Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for God has said: “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.” ⁶ So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"

²¹ Yea, forty years You sustained them in the wilderness. They lacked nothing; their clothes did not wear out, and their feet did not swell.

²⁵ Then Judas, who would betray Him, said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” Jesus answered, “You have said it yourself.” ²⁶ While they were eating, Jesus took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is My body.” ²⁷ Then He took the cup, gave thanks and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. ²⁸ This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. ²⁹ I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom." ³⁰ When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

⁹ Only guard yourselves carefully so you won't forget the things that you saw and let them slip from your mind for the rest of your life. Tell them to your children and to your grandchildren.

²³ Be careful, lest you forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make yourselves a carved image in the form of anything which the LORD your God has forbidden you.

¹⁴ "'I will be his father. He will be my son. When he does wrong I will correct him just as parents correct children.

¹⁷ "Blessed is the person whom God corrects. Do not despise discipline from the Almighty. ¹⁸ For he wounds and binds up. He injures and his hands make whole.

³² then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

¹² Blessed is the man whom you discipline, LORD, and teach out of your Law;

¹² because the LORD corrects the person he loves, just as a father corrects the son he delights in.

³ The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master's crib; but Israel doesn't know, my people do not understand.

³ Therefore, you son of man, prepare you belongings for moving, and move by day in their sight; and you shall move from your place to another place in their sight: it may be they will consider, though they are a rebellious house.

²⁸ Because he considers and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he will surely live. He will not die.

³² But when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.

⁵ And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, or lose heart when He rebukes you. ⁶ For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he punishes every son he accepts." ⁷ Endure suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? ⁸ If you do not experience discipline like everyone else, then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we have all had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them. Should we not much more submit to the Father of our spirits and live? ¹⁰ Our fathers disciplined us for a short time as they thought best, but God disciplines us for our good, so that we may share in His holiness. ¹¹ No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields a peaceful harvest of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

¹⁹ Those I love, I rebuke and discipline. Therefore be earnest and repent.

²⁰ and enlighten them statutes and torahs and have them know the way to walk and the work to work:

³³ Walk in every way that the LORD your God commanded you, so that life may go well for you, and so that you will prolong your days in the land that you will possess.'"

²⁴ Only, fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart. Indeed, consider what great things he has done for you.

³¹ that they may fear you, to walk in your ways, so long as they live in the land which you gave to our fathers.

¹ A song of ascents. Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in his ways.

⁶ They were both upright in the sight of God, blamelessly observing all the Lord's commands and requirements.

⁸ I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

¹⁰ "When the LORD your God brings you to the land that he promised to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, he will give you large and beautiful cities that you didn't build, ¹¹ houses filled with every good thing that you didn't supply, wells that you didn't dig, and vineyards and olive groves that you didn't plant. When you eat and are satisfied,

⁹ and that you may prolong your days in the land, which the LORD swore to your fathers to give to them and to their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey. ¹⁰ "The land you are entering to possess is not like the land of Egypt from which you came. You used to sow your seed and irrigate it with your foot as in a vegetable garden. ¹¹ but the land, you pass over to possess is a land of mountains and valleys; and drinks water of the rain of the heavens: ¹² a land which the LORD your God cares for; the eyes of the LORD your God are constantly on it from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.

²⁴ So the children went in and took possession of the land. You subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites; you gave them into their hand, and their kings and the nations of the land to do with them according to their pleasure. ²⁵ They conquered fortified cities and fertile ground, possessing houses filled with all kinds of good things, wells already dug, with vineyards, olive orchards, and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate, were satiated, and were well nourished, delighting themselves in your great goodness.

⁹ You care for the land and water it; you greatly enrich it. The stream of God is filled with waters. You provide their grain, for so you have established it. ¹⁰ You drench its furrows. You level its ridges. You soften it with showers. You bless it with a crop. ¹¹ You crown the year with your bounty. Your carts overflow with abundance. ¹² The wilderness grasslands overflow, the hills are clothed with gladness. ¹³ The meadows are clothed with flocks and the valleys are covered with grain. They shout for joy, yes, they sing.

⁶ in that day I swore to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands.

¹⁴ butter from cows, and milk from sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the sons of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat. And you drank the blood of the grape.

⁶ They came as far as the middle of the house as if takers of wheat, and they struck him in the stomach. Then Recab and Baanah his brother escaped.

¹¹ Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand cors of wheat for food to his household, and twenty thousand baths of pure oil. Solomon gave this to Hiram year by year.

¹⁰ Behold, I will give to your servants, the cutters who cut timber, twenty thousand cors of beaten wheat, twenty thousand baths of barley, twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil.” ¹¹ Then Huram king of Tyre answered in a letter, and he sent word to Solomon: "Because the LORD loves his people, he has made you king over them." ¹² »Praise the LORD the God of Israel, Creator of heaven and earth! He has given King David a wise son, full of understanding and skill. He now plans to build a Temple for the LORD and a palace for himself. ¹³ Now I'm sending along Hiram-abi, a skilled craftsman, who is very creative. ¹⁴ a son of a woman from the daughters of Dan, and his father was a man of Tyre, knowledgeable for working with gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone, and wood, and with purple, blue, and crimson fabric, and with fine linen, for engraving any engraving and devising any plan that is given to him, with your skilled men and the skilled men of my lord David your father. ¹⁵ So now let my lord send to his servants the grain and the oil and the wine as my lord has said;

¹⁶ "I would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you."

¹⁴ He grants peace within your borders, satisfying you with the finest of wheat.

²³ It will happen in that day that every place where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silver shekels, shall be for briers and thorns.

¹⁷ "They'll devour your harvest and your food. They'll devour your sons and your daughters. They'll devour your vines and your fig trees. With their swords they'll batter down your fortified cities in which you trust.

¹⁷ “'“Judah and the land of Israel were your traders. They traded wheat of Minnith, confections, honey, oil, and balm for your merchandise.

⁸ "She did not know that I gave her the grain, the new wine and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold, which they used for Baal.

²² and the earth will respond to the grain, and the new wine, and the oil; and they will respond to Jezreel.

⁴ Each man will sit under his vine and under his fig tree. No one will make them afraid! The mouth of the LORD Almighty has spoken.

¹⁷ Though the fig tree shall not blossom, and fruit is not on the vines; the work of the olive fails, and the fields make no food; the flock is cut off from the fold, and no herd is in the stalls,

⁹ Here is a boy who has five barley loaves, and two small fishes; but what are they among so many?

¹³ So they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

²⁵ May your shoe latches be iron and bronze, and your days as your strength.

⁸ "Return to your tents with great wealth, plenty of livestock, silver, gold, bronze, iron, and lots of clothing. Divide the spoil from your enemies among your relatives."

¹⁴ "I have taken great pains to provide for the temple of the LORD three thousand seven hundred and fifty tons of gold, about thirty-seven thousand five hundred tons of silver, quantities of copper and iron too great to be weighed, and wood and stone. And you may add to them.

² Iron is taken from the ground; and copper is smelted from ore.

¹¹ houses filled with every good thing that you didn't supply, wells that you didn't dig, and vineyards and olive groves that you didn't plant. When you eat and are satisfied, ¹² "Beware that you do not forget the LORD, for he brought you out of Egypt your house of bondage.

¹⁴ But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from you, and we have given you of your own.

² Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.

⁹ Honor the LORD with your substance, with the first fruits of all your increase:

¹⁹ And He instructed the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He spoke a blessing. Then He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples to the people.

²³ (Some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks).

⁶ He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.

³¹ So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.

¹⁸ give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

⁴ For everything God created is good, and nothing should be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, ⁵ because it is consecrated through the word of God and prayer.

²¹ They forgot God, who saved them, who had done great things in Egypt,

³² for the waywardness of the simple ones will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them.

⁹ lest I be full, deny you, and say, 'Who is the LORD?' or lest I be poor, and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.

¹⁰ I clothed you also with embroidered work, and put sealskin sandals on you. I dressed you with fine linen and covered you with silk. ¹¹ "'I adorned you with ornaments, put bracelets on your hands and a necklace around your neck.'" ¹² And I put a ring on your nose, and earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head. ¹³ »‘You were adorned with gold and silver. Your dress was of fine linen, silk and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour, honey and oil; so you were exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty. ¹⁴ And your name went out among the nations, because of your beauty, for it was perfect by My splendor which I had set on you, declares the Sovereign LORD. ¹⁵ "'But you trusted your beauty. You used your fame to become a prostitute. You had sex with everyone who walked by.

⁸ "She did not know that I gave her the grain, the new wine and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold, which they used for Baal. ⁹ Therefore I will take again my grain in its time, and my wine in its season; and I will take away my wool and my flax, which were to cover her nakedness.

⁴⁷ "Because you didn't serve the LORD your God joyfully and wholeheartedly, despite the abundance of everything you have,

²⁰ because after I've brought them to the land flowing with milk and honey that I promised to their ancestors by an oath, they'll eat, grow fat, and then they'll turn to other gods and serve them, while despising me and breaking my covenant.

¹⁵ But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked; you grew fat, thick and sated. And he abandoned God who made him, and fell away from the Rock of his salvation.

⁴ I made me great works, I built me houses, and planted vineyards,

¹⁴ who says, I will build myself a wide house and large upper rooms. And he cuts out windows for it and covers with cedar, and paints with vermilion. ¹⁵ Do you become a king because you are competing in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink and do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him.

³ "They say: 'It is almost time to rebuild houses. This city is a cooking pot, and we are the meat.'

⁵ I fed you in the desert, in the land of drought. ⁶ When I fed them, they were satisfied; they were satisfied and their heart was lifted up; therefore they forgot me.

¹¹ Forasmuch therefore as you trample on the poor, and take taxes of wheat from him- therefore you who have built houses of cut stone will not dwell in them. You who have planted pleasant vineyards shall not drink their wine.

⁴ "Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies waste?

²⁸ It was the same in the days of Lot: People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.

¹ Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him. ² Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold. ³ He traveled from place to place from the Negev until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier. ⁴ This was where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the LORD. ⁵ And Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.

³ He owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, one thousand head of cattle, and five hundred donkeys. He also had a large number of servants. In fact he was the greatest (richest) of all the Orientals in the East!

⁶ Surely every man walks in a shadow. Surely they are in an uproar in vain. He heaps up and does not know who will gather them.

¹³ Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." ¹⁴ But Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed Me judge or executor between you?” ¹⁵ And He said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourselves against every form of greed, for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” ¹⁶ Then He told them a parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced an abundance. ¹⁷ And he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' ¹⁸ Then he said: ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my produce and my goods. ¹⁹ Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ ²⁰ But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul will be demanded of you. Then who will have all you have prepared?' ²¹ This is how it will be for anyone who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich toward God.”

¹¹ Be careful! Otherwise, you will forget the LORD your God by failing to keep his commands, ordinances, and statutes that I'm commanding you this day.

²⁰ And that his heart be not lifted up with pride over his brethren, nor decline to the right or to the left, that he and his sons may reign a long time over Israel.

¹⁶ But when he became strong his heart was lifted up to [his] downfall; and he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.

²⁵ But Hezekiah didn't render again according to the grace done to him. His heart was lifted up; therefore there was wrath on him, and on Judah and Jerusalem.

⁶ "They didn't say, 'Where is the LORD who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through the land of desert and pits, through the land of dryness and deep darkness, a land that people don't pass through, and where no one lives?'

³¹ Generation, consider the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness to Israel? Or a land of thick darkness? Why do my people say, 'We have broken loose. We will come to you no more?'

⁷ For who makes you so superior? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not? ⁸ Already you have all you want. Already you have become rich. Without us, you have become kings. How I wish you really were kings, so that we might be kings with you.

⁵ And the LORD said to Moses, Pass on in front of the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel And take in your hand your staff with which you smote the River, and go. ⁶ "Behold! I will stand before you there upon the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock and water will come out of it. Then the people may drink." Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.

¹¹ Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice. And abundant water went out, and the community and their livestock drank.

⁶ the LORD sent poisonous snakes among the people. They bit the people, and many of the Israelites died.

¹⁹ Then we went on from Horeb, through all that great and cruel waste which you saw, on our way to the hill-country of the Amorites, as the Lord gave us orders; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.

¹³ "He made him ride on the heights of the earth and fed him with the produce of the fields. He gave him honey from rocks and olive oil from solid rock.

¹⁵ He split the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths. ¹⁶ And he brought streams out of the rock and caused water to flow down like rivers.

⁴¹ He opened a rock, and water gushed out flowing like a river in the desert.

⁸ who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of waters.

⁷ And the glowing sand will become a pool and the thirsty ground springs of water. In the habitation of jackals, where they lay, will be grass with reeds and rushes.

¹² Who caused his glorious arm to be at Moses' right hand? Who divided the waters before them, to make himself an everlasting name? ¹³ Who led them through the depths, like a horse in the wilderness, so that they didn’t stumble? ¹⁴ As the cattle that go down into the valley, the Spirit of the LORD caused them to rest. So you led your people to make yourself a glorious name.

⁵ I fed you in the desert, in the land of drought.

⁴ and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.

¹⁵ When the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, "What is it?" For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, "It is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat."

³ He humbled you and allowed you to suffer hunger, and fed you with manna, which you didn't know, neither did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man does not live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.

⁵ "This is what the LORD God of Israel says: 'Like these good figs, so I'll regard as good the exiles of Judah whom I sent from this place to the land of the Chaldeans. ⁶ »‘I will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them to this land again. I will build them up and not overthrow them. I will plant them and not uproot them.

²⁶ Teth It is good to wait quietly in the salvation of the LORD. ²⁷ It is good for a man that he bear the yoke while he is young. ²⁸ Let him sit alone and keep silence, because he has laid it on him. ²⁹ Let him put his mouth to the dust, there may yet be hope. ³⁰ Let him give his cheek to him who strikes him; let him be filled with insults. ³¹ For LORD will not cast off forever. ³² though he causes grief, his compassion abounds according to his gracious love. ³³ for he doth not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men.

²⁸ And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.

¹⁷ For our light and temporary affliction is producing for us an eternal glory that far outweighs our troubles.

¹² Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.

¹⁷ "You may say to yourselves, 'These nations are more numerous than we are. How can we dispossess them?'

⁴ "You shall not say to yourself when the LORD your God is driving them out before you, saying, 'Because of my righteousness the LORD brought me to take possession of this land'; but because of the wickedness of these nations the LORD is driving them out before you.

⁸ For he says, Are not my commanders all like kings? ⁹ Is not, Calno, like Carchemish? Is not, Hamath, like Arpad? Is not, Samaria, like Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images excelled those of Jerusalem and of Samaria, ¹¹ shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her idols? ¹² And this shall happen: when the Lord has finished all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, "I will punish the arrogance of the king of Assyria and his haughtiness." ¹³ For he has said, “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding. I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures. Like a valiant man I have brought down their rulers. ¹⁴ and my hand found, as a nest, the valuables of the people: and as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth; and no one flapped the wing or gaped the mouth or chirped.

³⁰ The king spoke: "Is this not great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling-place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?"

⁸ Ephraim said, "Surely I have become rich, I have found myself wealth. In all my wealth they won't find in me any iniquity that is sin."

¹⁶ Therefore he sacrifices to his net, and burns incense to his dragnet, because by them his life is luxurious, and his food is good.

⁷ For who makes you so superior? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?

⁸ But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn to your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bond-men, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

¹² "If you listen to these rules and faithfully obey them, the LORD your God will keep his covenant with you and be merciful to you, as he swore to your fathers.

¹ A Song of Ascents. By Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, they who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain. ² It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil, for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

¹ By David. Blessed is the LORD my rock, who is teaching My hands for war, my fingers for battle.

²² The blessing of the LORD makes rich and he adds no grief to it.

²⁶ I call Heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you shall soon utterly perish from off the land which you are crossing over Jordan to possess. You shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.

⁵⁸ If you will not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and fearful name, the LORD your God, ⁵⁹ then he will inflict extraordinary plagues on you and your children, great and lasting plagues, and severe and lasting illnesses. ⁶⁰ "He will bring all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded. They will cling to you. ⁶¹ "the LORD will also bring you every kind of sickness and plague not written in this Book of the Law. They will continue until you are dead. ⁶² "You were at one time as numerous as the stars in the sky. But only a few of you will be left. This is because you did not obey the LORD your God. ⁶³ Just as the LORD delighted to prosper and increase you, so now the LORD will delight to destroy, exterminate, and banish you from the land that you are about to enter to possess." ⁶⁴ "He'll scatter you among the peoples from one end of the earth to the other, and there you'll serve other gods made of wood and stones, which neither you nor your ancestors have known. ⁶⁵ Among those nations you'll have no rest. There'll be no resting place for the soles of your feet. Instead, the LORD will give you an anxious heart, failing eyesight, and a despairing spirit. ⁶⁶ You'll cling to life, being fearful by both night and day, with no assurance of survival. ⁶⁷ In the morning you will say, If only it was evening! And at evening you will say, If only morning would come! Because of the fear in your hearts and the things which your eyes will see. ⁶⁸ Finally, the LORD will bring you back to Egypt by ship, a place that I said you'll never see again. There you'll try to sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you."

²⁵ Then they will answer themselves, 'Because they've abandoned the covenant of their LORD, the God of their ancestors that he had made with them when he brought them out of Egypt. ²⁶ And they went and served other gods and bowed down to them, gods whom they did not know them and he had not allotted to them. ²⁷ Therefore the LORD's anger burned against this land, to bring on it all the curses that are written in this book. ²⁸ Yahweh rooted them out of their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and thrust them into another land, as it is today.”

¹⁸ I'm declaring to you today that you will surely be destroyed. You won't live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan River to enter and possess. ¹⁹ I call heaven and earth as witness this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live:

¹³ know for certain that the LORD your God will not continue to drive out these nations ahead of you. Instead, they will be a snare and a trap for you, a whip to your backs, and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.

²⁵ But if you persist in doing evil, both you and your king will be swept away."

² in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood from the books the number of the years about which the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, for the completion of the desolation of Jerusalem, seventy years.

² "You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth. Therefore I will punish you for all of your sins."

¹⁸ Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD's wrath, but the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he will make an end, yes, a terrible end, of all those who dwell in the land.

⁶ "I have cut off nations; their strongholds are deserted. I have laid waste their streets, so that none pass through. Their cities have been destroyed and are without a man, without an inhabitant.

⁴⁷ That servant who knows his master’s will but does not get ready or follow his instructions will be beaten with many blows. ⁴⁸ But the one who unknowingly does things worthy of punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from him who has been entrusted with much, even more will be demanded.

³ No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

⁵ No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy. ¹⁷ And he brought up [against] them the king of the Chaldees, and slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and spared not young man nor maiden, old man nor him of hoary head: he gave [them] all into his hand.

¹¹ "And all Israel transgressed your law and turned aside so as not to listen to your voice, and so the curse and the oath which was written in the law of Moses, the servant of God, has been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him. ¹² He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us, and against our rulers who ruled us, by bringing on us a great calamity; for under the whole heaven such has not been done as has been done on Jerusalem.
