⁸ "If a case is too difficult for you to decide with respect to bloodshed, civil claims, assault and battery, or other matters of dispute within your courts, bring it to the place that the LORD your God will choose.

²⁶ And they judged the people at all times; any difficult cause they brought unto Moses, but every small cause they judged themselves.

¹² “One who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death, ¹³ but not if it is unintentional, but God allows it to happen; then I will appoint you a place where he shall flee. ¹⁴ »If a man schemes and kills a man deliberately remove him from my altar and put him to death.

²⁰ "If a man strikes his male or female servant with a stick and he or she dies as a direct result, the master must be punished.

²² "If men fight and hurt a pregnant woman so that she gives birth prematurely, and yet no harm follows, he shall be surely fined as much as the woman's husband demands and the judges allow.

²⁸ “If a bull gores a man or a woman to death, the bull shall surely be stoned, and its meat shall not be eaten; but the owner of the bull shall not be held responsible.

² If the thief is found breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt of bloodshed for him.

¹¹ you will select for yourselves cities for your cities of refuge, that a killer who has killed a person unintentionally can flee there.

¹⁶ But if he strikes him with an instrument of iron, so that he dies, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

¹⁹ the avenger of blood, he shall put the murderer to death; when he meeteth him, he shall put him to death. ²⁰ And if he thrust at him out of hatred, or hurl at him intentionally, so that he die, ²¹ or in hostility struck him with his hand, so that he died, he who struck him shall surely be put to death. He is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him. ²² But if he have thrust at him suddenly without enmity, or have cast upon him anything unintentionally, ²³ or, when not seeing him, he causes any stone by which one may die to fall on him and he dies, yet he was not his enemy and was not seeking his evil, ²⁴ then the assembly shall judge between the smiter and the avenger of blood, according to these judgments. ²⁵ »If you are innocent, the community must protect you from that relative. They must take you back to the city of refuge you fled to. You must live there until the death of the chief priest who was anointed with the holy oil. ²⁶ But if the killer surely goes out of the territory of the city of his refuge to which he fled, ²⁷ and the avenger of blood find him outside the border of his city of refuge and the avenger of blood kills the manslayer, he will not be guilty of blood, ²⁸ because he must live in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest the killer will return to the land of his property. ²⁹ These rules are to be your guide in judging through all your generations wherever you may be living. ³⁰ " 'If anyone kills a person, the killer will be put to death according to the testimony of witnesses, but someone cannot die on testimony of one person. ³¹ And you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death. But he shall surely be put to death. ³² “'You shall take no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may come again to dwell in the land before the death of the priest. ³³ “'So you shall not pollute the land where you live; for blood pollutes the land. No atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him who shed it. ³⁴ You shall not defile the land which you inhabit, where I dwell; for I, the LORD, dwell among the children of Israel.’”

¹⁷ "You will not show partiality in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great. You will not fear man for the judgment is God's. The case that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.'

⁵ ¶ But ye shall seek the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there for his habitation, and thou shalt go there.

⁴ This is the case of the man slayer who shall flee there and live: Whoever kills his neighbor unintentionally, and didn't hate him in time past—

¹⁰ so that innocent blood will not be shed in your land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, and so guilt for blood be upon you. ¹¹ "But if there is a man who hates his neighbor and lies in wait for him and murders him. If he flees to one of these cities,

¹⁷ then the two men to whom the legal dispute pertains shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges who are in office in those days.

¹⁶ Then two prostitutes came to the king, and they stood before him. ¹⁷ One of them said: "Your Majesty, this woman and I live in the same house. I gave birth to a baby boy at home while she was there. ¹⁸ The third day after I delivered, this woman delivered also. We were together. There was no stranger with us in the house, just us two in the house. ¹⁹ And the son of this woman died at night, because she laid on it. ²⁰ So she got up in the middle of the night, and she took my son from beside me while your servant was asleep, and she put him in her lap, and she put her dead son in my lap. ²¹ The next morning, I got up to nurse my son, and he was dead. But when I examined him carefully in the light of day, he turned out not to be my son whom I had borne!" ²² The other woman said: "The living child is mine, and the dead one is yours!" The first woman answered back: "The dead child is yours, and the living one is mine!" They argued before the king. ²³ And the king said, This one says, This is my son, the living one, and your son the dead. And that one says, No, but your son is the dead, and my son the living. ²⁴ And the king said—Bring me a sword! So they brought a sword before the king. ²⁵ And the sovereign says, Cut the living child in two; and give half to the one and half to the one. ²⁶ But the woman, whose child was alive, said to the king; (for her bowels were moved upon her child) I beseech thee, my lord, give her the child alive, and do not kill it. But the other said: Let it be neither mine nor thine; but divide it. ²⁷ The king announced his decision: "Give the living child to the first woman. Don't kill him. She is his mother." ²⁸ And when all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had given, they feared the king; for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to exercise justice.

⁸ In Jerusalem also Josaphat appointed some of the priests and Levites and patriarchs of Israel, for the judgment of the Lord, and to judge the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ⁹ He told them: »Faithfully serve the LORD! ¹⁰ And whatever cause shall come to you from your brothers that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, you shall even warn them so that they do not sin against the LORD, and wrath come on you and your brothers. Do this and you shall not sin.

⁴ Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, to the testimony of Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. ⁵ for there the thrones of judgment settle - the thrones of the house of David.

¹¹ "Thus saith the Lord Almighty, Ask the priests the law, saying,

⁷ For the lips of the priest should guard knowledge, and they should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.
