¹⁹ A righteous person will have many troubles, but the LORD will deliver him from them all.

¹¹ You brought us into prison. You laid a burden on our backs. ¹² You allowed men to ride over our heads. We went through fire and through water, but you brought us to the place of abundance.

¹ A Song of degrees of David. ¶ If the LORD had not been for us, now may Israel say, ² if the LORD had not been on our side, when men came against us, ³ then they had swallowed us alive when they kindled their wrath against us: ⁴ Then the flood waters would have overwhelmed us, the torrent would have flooded over us; ⁵ the swollen waters would have swept us away.

⁶ So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the pit of Malchiah, the son of the king, which was in the courtyard of the guard. And they let Jeremiah down by ropes. Now in the pit there was no water, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.

⁵² Those who are my enemies, without a cause, have chased me about like a bird. ⁵³ They have cut off my life in the pit, and cast a stone at me. ⁵⁴ Waters flowed over my head; then I said, I am cut off.

¹⁶ Then the king gave orders and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions' den. And the king said to Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually will himself deliver thee. ¹⁷ And a stone was brought and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the signet ring of his princes that the agreement concerning Daniel might not be changed.

⁸ We do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the hardships we encountered in the province of Asia. We were under a burden far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. ⁹ Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. ¹⁰ He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us. In Him we have placed our hope that He will yet again deliver us,

¹⁷ For our light and temporary affliction is producing for us an eternal glory that far outweighs our troubles.

¹² Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you, as though something strange were happening to you. ¹³ But rejoice that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.
