⁷ Do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: “The people sat down to eat and to drink, and got up to revel in idolatry.”

⁴ And he took from their hand, and he shaped it with a tool, and he made it a cast-image bull calf, and they said, "These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt."

⁶ Early the next day the people sacrificed burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. After that they sat down to a feast, which turned into an orgy. ⁷ the LORD said to Moses: "Go down there. Your people whom you brought out of Egypt have corrupted themselves. ⁸ They have turned aside quickly from the way that I commanded them; they have made for themselves a cast-image bull calf, and they bowed to it, and they sacrificed to it, and they said, 'These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.'"

¹⁷ When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, "There is the noise of war in the camp."

¹⁹ As Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, he became angry. He threw the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the base of the mountain.

¹² "Then the LORD said to me, 'Get going! Go down from here at once! Your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned quickly from the way that I commanded them, and have cast an idol for their use.'

¹⁶ »I saw that you had indeed sinned against the LORD your God. You made yourselves an idol, cast in the shape of a calf. You turned aside quickly from the way the LORD had commanded you. ¹⁷ And I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands and broke them before your eyes. ¹⁸ And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights, -- I ate no bread and drank no water, -- because of all your sin which ye had sinned, in doing what is evil in the eyes of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. ¹⁹ I feared the anger and wrath of the LORD against you, because he was irate enough to destroy you. But the LORD also listened to me at that time. ²⁰ And the LORD was very angry with Aaron, to destroy him, and I also prayed for Aaron at that time. ²¹ »I took your sinful thing, the calf that you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it. I ground it very small until it was as fine as dust. I threw its dust into the brook that flowed down the mountain.

¹⁹ At Mount Horeb they made a statue of a calf. They worshiped an idol made of metal. ²⁰ Thus they exchanged their glory for an image of a bull that eats grass.

¹¹ But now I am writing you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a verbal abuser, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

⁹ Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who submit to or perform homosexual acts,

⁷ But not everyone has this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that they eat such food as if it were sacrificed to an idol. And since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.

¹⁴ Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.

²⁰ Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature. ²¹ In the law it is written, "By men of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord." ²² Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.

²¹ My children, keep yourselves from idols.
