⁵ For all that, God was not pleased with most of them—their carcasses were scattered around the desert!

¹¹ The LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them? ¹² I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.

²⁸ Say to them, 'Surely as I live,' declares the LORD, 'just as you spoke in my hearing, so I will do to you; ²⁹ in this desert your corpses will fall, and all your counted ones, according to all your number, from twenty years old and above who grumbled against me. ³⁰ none of you, shall enter into the land, as to which I uplifted my hand to give you an abode therein,—save Caleb son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun: ³¹ But your little children, whom you said would be plunder, I will bring them, and they will know the land that you rejected. ³² But, your own dead bodies, shall fall in this desert; ³³ "'Your children will be shepherds in the desert for forty years. They will suffer for your unfaithfulness until the last of your bodies lies dead in the desert. ³⁴ "'You explored the land for forty days. So for forty years, one year for each day, you will suffer for your sins and know what it means for me to be against you.' ³⁵ I, the LORD, have spoken; I will surely do this to all this evil community who has banded together against me. In this desert they will come to an end, and there they will die."

³⁷ the men who spread the evil report of the land died by the plague before the LORD.

⁶⁴ And among these there was not a man of those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest, who counted the Israelites in the desert of Sinai. ⁶⁵ for the LORD had said to them that they would die, yea die in the wilderness. And not a man of them was left save Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

³⁴ »the LORD heard what you said. He was angry and solemnly swore: ³⁵ "'Not one man of this evil generation will see that good land, which I swore to give your fathers,

¹⁵ For his hand was against them, that they should perish from the midst of the camp. ¹⁶ "And so all the soldiers among the people died.

³² In spite of all of this, they kept on sinning and didn't believe in his marvelous deeds. ³³ And he consumed their days in vanity, and their years in terror. ³⁴ When he slew them, they sought him, and turned them early, and inquired after God.

¹ A Prayer by Moses, the man of God. Lord, you have been our dwelling place for all generations.

⁷ Indeed, we are consumed by your anger and terrified by your wrath. ⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.

¹¹ So I swore by an oath in my anger, Shall they enter into my rest, no.

²⁶ So he lifted up his hand unto them, that he would let them fall in the desert;

¹⁷ And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

⁵ Although you are fully aware of this, I want to remind you that after Jesus had delivered His people out of the land of Egypt, He destroyed those who did not believe.
