¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privately for the innocent without cause:

⁸ He sits in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places does he murder the innocent: his eyes are privately set against the poor. ⁹ He lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lies in wait to catch the poor: he does catch the poor, when he draws him into his net. ¹⁰ He crouches, and humbles himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones.

¹² Like a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.

⁷ For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they have dug for my soul.

⁶ They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.

⁵ They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privately; they say, Who shall see them? ⁶ They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.

¹⁶ For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

¹⁸ And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privately for their own lives.

⁶ The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

¹⁴ There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

¹⁸ Then said they, Come and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words. ¹⁹ Give heed to me, O LORD, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me. ²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before you to speak good for them, and to turn away your wrath from them.

² The good man is perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net.

³ Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, ⁴ And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and kill him.

²⁵ But this comes to pass, that the word (o. logos) might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

¹⁵ Now therefore all of you with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you tomorrow, as though all of you would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, before even he comes near, are ready to kill him.

³ And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.
