⁴ John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

¹ In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, ² And saying, Repent all of you: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

⁶ And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

¹¹ I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit, (o. pneuma) and with fire:

⁷⁷ To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

² Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word (o. rhema) of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. ³ And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

²³ And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

³⁷ That word, (o. rhema) I say, all of you know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;

²⁴ When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. ²⁵ And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think all of you that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there comes one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.

³ And he said unto them, Unto what then were all of you baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. ⁴ Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

¹⁶ And now why tarry you? arise, and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
