¹¹ Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

¹ After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day. ² And Job spoke, and said,

²⁵ For the thing which I greatly feared has come upon me, and that which I was afraid of has come unto me. ²⁶ I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.

¹⁵ But he saves the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.

¹ But Job answered and said,

¹⁴ To him that is afflicted pity should be showed from his friend; but he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.

¹⁴ Then you scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions:

¹ Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,

³ Does God pervert judgment? or does the Almighty pervert justice?

²⁰ Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers:

²² They that hate you shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nothing.

²² This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroys the perfect and the wicked. ²³ If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.

⁹ Remember, I plead to you, that you have made me as the clay; and will you bring me into dust again?

¹ Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? ¹⁵ Behold, he puts no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight. ¹⁶ How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinks iniquity like water?

³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

³⁵ They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepares deceit.

⁵ But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should subside your grief.

¹⁷ Not for any injustice in mine hands: also my prayer is pure.

²² When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return.

¹⁵ And where is now my hope? as for my hope, who shall see it?

¹⁷ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.

¹⁶ Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflowed with a flood:

¹¹ My foot has held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined. ¹² Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

⁴ How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? ⁵ Behold even to the moon, and it shines not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight. ⁶ How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm?

¹⁴ Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?

⁵ God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me. ⁶ My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep.

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

¹ I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? ² For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? ³ Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity? ⁴ Does not he see my ways, and count all my steps? ⁵ If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot has hasted to deceit; ⁶ Let me be weighed in an even balance that God may know mine integrity. ⁷ If my step has turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot has cleaved to mine hands; ⁸ Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out. ⁹ If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door; ¹⁰ Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her. ¹¹ For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges. ¹² For it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and would root out all mine increase. ¹³ If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me; ¹⁴ What then shall I do when God rises up? and when he visits, what shall I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless has not eaten thereof; ¹⁸ (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;) ¹⁹ If I have seen any perish for lack of clothing, or any poor without covering; ²⁰ If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate: ²² Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone. ²³ For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure. ²⁴ If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, You are my confidence; ²⁵ If I rejoice because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had got much; ²⁶ If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness; ²⁷ And my heart has been secretly enticed, or my mouth has kissed my hand: ²⁸ This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above. ²⁹ If I rejoice at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him: ³⁰ Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul. ³¹ If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied. ³² The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller. ³³ If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom: ³⁴ Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door? ³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book. ³⁶ Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me. ³⁷ I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him. ³⁸ If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain; ³⁹ If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life: ⁴⁰ Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

¹⁸ For I am full of matter, the spirit within me constrains me. ¹⁹ Behold, my belly is as wine which has no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles. ²⁰ I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will open my lips and answer.

⁷ He withdraws not his eyes from the righteous: but with kings are they on the throne; yea, he does establish them for ever, and they are exalted.

¹² But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge.

³⁹ Will you hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,

⁸ Will you also nullify my judgment? will you condemn me, that you may be righteous?

¹³ Hide them in the dust together; and bind their faces in secret.

⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job.

⁷ Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for you have smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; you have broken the teeth of the ungodly.

² Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver.

¹⁴ Behold, he labors with iniquity, and has conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. ¹⁵ He made a pit, and dug it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made. ¹⁶ His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own crown of the head.

²⁵ I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

³⁶ Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

⁵ Behold, you have made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before you: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

¹¹ When you with rebukes do correct man for iniquity, you make his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.

¹³ O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go behind, and be no more.

²² Cease all of you from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of ?

Your dream, and the visions of your head upon your bed, are these; ²⁹ As for you, O king, your thoughts came into your mind upon your bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that reveals secrets makes known to you what shall come to pass.

⁷ For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it has no stalk; the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.

¹² Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he comes and rain righteousness upon you. ¹³ All of you have plowed wickedness, all of you have reaped iniquity; all of you have eaten the fruit of lies: because you did trust in your way, in the multitude of your mighty men.

¹⁰ They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.

¹⁶ When I heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the voice: rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble: when he comes up unto the people, he will invade them with his troops.

²⁶ And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

²⁰ And he said, That which comes out of the man, that defiles the man. ²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: ²³ All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

¹² And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

²⁹ And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, (o. logos) and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

²⁰ But God said unto him, You fool, this night your soul shall be required of you: then whose shall those things be, which you have provided?

²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; ²³ And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and sees Abraham far off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

³² But I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not: and when you are converted, strengthen your brethren.

⁴³ And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

³⁷ But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. (o. pneuma) ³⁸ And he said unto them, Why are all of you troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? ³⁹ Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit (o. pneuma) has not flesh and bones, as all of you see me have.

²⁰ For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

⁴ And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffers not to live.

⁵ But after your hardness and refusing to repent heart treasure up unto yourself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

⁴ God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That you might be justified in your sayings, (o. logos) and might overcome when you are judged. ⁵ But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who takes vengeance? (I speak as a man) ⁶ God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world? ⁷ For if the truth of God has more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?

²⁰ On the contrary;, O man, who are you that reply against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why have you made me thus?

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

¹² For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

⁴ For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that all of you should be grieved, but that all of you might know the love (o. agape) which I have more abundantly unto you. ⁵ But if any have caused grief, he has not grieved me, but in part: that I may not burden you all. ⁶ Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. ⁷ So that contrariwise all of you ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

¹ Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;

⁷ But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

¹⁶ For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

¹ For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

⁶ Nevertheless God, that comforts those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

⁸ For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle has made you sorry, though it were but for a season. ⁹ Now I rejoice, not that all of you were made sorry, but that all of you sorrowed to repentance: for all of you were made sorry after a godly manner, that all of you might receive damage by us in nothing. ¹⁰ For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world works death.

⁶ But this I say, He which sows sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which sows bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

⁷ Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that sows to the Spirit (o. pneuma) shall of the Spirit (o. pneuma) reap life everlasting.

²⁹ Let no corrupt communication (o. logos) proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

⁶ Let your (o. logos) speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that all of you may know how all of you ought to answer every man.

¹⁴ Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

⁸ And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit (o. pneuma) of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

¹⁷ Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

⁷ And of the angels he says, Who makes his angels spirits, (o. pneuma) and his ministers a flame of fire.

¹⁴ Are they not all ministering spirits, (o. pneuma) sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

³ For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest all of you be wearied and faint in your minds.

⁵ And all of you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks unto you as unto children, My son, despise not you the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are rebuked of him:

¹² Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;

¹¹ For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withers the grass, and the flower thereof falls, and the grace of the fashion of it perishes: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

¹³ Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

¹⁷ And if all of you call on the Father, who without respect of persons judges according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:

²⁴ For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower thereof falls away:

⁴ For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

⁹ The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

⁶ And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

¹⁷ And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:

¹⁶ Repent; or else I will come unto you quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

⁸ And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, LORD God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
