¹ Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said, ² How long will it be before all of you make an end of words? mark, and afterwards we will speak. ³ Wherefore are we counted as beasts, and reputed vile in your sight? ⁴ He tears himself in his anger: shall the earth be forsaken for you? and shall the rock be removed out of his place? ⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out with him. ⁷ The steps of his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down. ⁸ For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walks upon a snare. ⁹ The animal trap shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him. ¹⁰ The snare is laid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way. ¹¹ Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet. ¹² His strength shall be famished, and destruction shall be ready at his side. ¹³ It shall devour the strength of his skin: even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength. ¹⁴ His confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ It shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation. ¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off. ¹⁷ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings. ²⁰ They that come after him shall be astonished at his day, as they that went before were affrighted. ²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knows not God.

²⁴ Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

³ Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power:

¹⁴ And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.

⁸ And at this house, which is high, every one that passes by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why has the LORD done thus unto this land, and to this house?

⁶ For the LORD had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us. ⁷ Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life.

⁹ And you, Solomon my son, know you the God of your father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts: if you seek him, he will be found of you; but if you forsake him, he will cast you off for ever.

⁹ If it please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed: and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king's treasuries.

¹¹ Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him. ¹² And when they lifted up their eyes far off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven. ¹³ So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spoke a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it. ⁶ As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.

²⁰ Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;

² For wrath kills the foolish man, and envy slays the silly one. ³ I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation. ⁴ His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them. ⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eats up, and takes it even out of the thorns, and the robber swallows up their substance.

¹² He dissapoints the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise. ¹³ He takes the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the perverse is carried headlong. ¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope in the noonday as in the night.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¹ Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said, ² How long will you speak these things? and how long shall the words of your mouth be like a strong wind?

⁴ If your children have sinned against him, and he have cast them away for their transgression;

¹⁴ Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider's web.

²² They that hate you shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nothing.

²² A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?

¹⁴ If iniquity be in your hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in your tabernacles.

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the spirit.

⁷ But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach you; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell you: ⁸ Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach you: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto you.

⁵ O that all of you would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom. ⁶ Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.

¹² Your remembrances are like unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.

¹⁴ Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in mine hand?

¹⁸ And surely the mountains falling comes to nothing, and the rock is removed out of his place.

⁶ your own mouth condemns you, and not I: yea, your own lips testify against you.

²¹ A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

²³ He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. ²⁴ Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

² I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are all of you all. ³ Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldens you that you answer?

⁹ He tears me in his wrath, who hates me: he gnashes upon me with his teeth; mine enemy sharpens his eyes upon me.

⁴ For you have hid their heart from understanding: therefore shall you not exalt them.

¹⁰ But as for you all, do all of you return, and come now: for I cannot find one wise man among you.

¹⁶ They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.

¹² His strength shall be famished, and destruction shall be ready at his side. ¹³ It shall devour the strength of his skin: even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength.

¹³ He has put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are verily cut off from me. ¹⁴ My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ They that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an foreigner in their sight. ¹⁶ I called my servant, and he gave me no answer; I implored him with my mouth. ¹⁷ My breath is strange to my wife, though I implored for the children's sake of mine own body. ¹⁸ Yea, young children despised me; I arose, and they spoke against me. ¹⁹ All my inward friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned against me.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

⁸ He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found: yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night.

¹⁸ That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down: according to his substance shall the restitution be, and he shall not rejoice therein. ¹⁹ Because he has oppressed and has forsaken the poor; because he has violently taken away an house which he built not; ²⁰ Surely he shall not feel quietness in his belly, he shall not save of that which he desired. ²¹ There shall none of his food be left; therefore shall no man look for his goods. ²² In the fullness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him.

²⁵ It is drawn, and comes out of the body; yea, the glittering sword comes out of his gall: terrors are upon him. ²⁶ All darkness shall be hid in his secret places: a fire not blown shall consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tabernacle. ²⁷ The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him. ²⁸ The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

² Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.

¹⁴ Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of your ways.

¹⁷ How often is the candle of the wicked put out! and how often comes their destruction upon them! God distributes sorrows in his anger.

²⁸ For all of you say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?

¹⁰ Therefore snares are round about you, and sudden fear troubles you;

¹⁷ For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death: if one know them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death.

¹ Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,

¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep.

¹⁹ My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.

³⁸ If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain; ³⁹ If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

¹ Wherefore, Job, I pray you, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.

¹⁶ Even so would he have removed you out of the strait into a broad place, where there is no strictness; and that which should be set on your table should be full of fatness.

⁸ Will you also nullify my judgment? will you condemn me, that you may be righteous?

³⁴ He beholds all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.

⁷ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends: for all of you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has. ⁸ Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that all of you have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job. ⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job.

¹³ He had also seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴ And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch. ¹⁵ And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren. ¹⁶ After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.

¹² If he turn not, he will sharpen his sword; he has bent his bow, and made it ready. ¹³ He has also prepared for him the instruments of death; he ordains his arrows against the persecutors. ¹⁴ Behold, he labors with iniquity, and has conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.

¹⁵ The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken.

⁶ Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.

²⁸ For you will light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.

³⁶ You have enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip.

¹⁰ The LORD brings the counsel of the heathen to nothing: he makes the devices of the people of no effect.

¹⁰ The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.

¹⁶ The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

⁸ Let destruction come upon him at unexpectedly; and let his net that he has hid catch himself: into that very destruction let him fall.

¹³ The LORD shall laugh at him: for he sees that his day is coming.

⁵ There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God has scattered the bones of him that camps against you: you have put them to shame, because God has despised them.

⁴ My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.

¹⁹ How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.

²² So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before you.

⁶ Pour out your wrath upon the heathen that have not known you, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon your name.

⁴ They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

¹⁰ Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.

¹³ Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.

¹⁰ The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.

⁷ Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Demolish it, demolish it, even to the foundation thereof.

³⁰ They refused my counsel: they despised all my reproof. ³¹ Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. ³² For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

²² But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.

¹² When you go, your steps shall not be straitened; and when you run, you shall not stumble.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.

²² His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be held with the cords of his sins.

⁷ The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

²⁸ The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.

⁹ The light of the righteous rejoices: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

³² The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous has hope in his death.

¹³ He that answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame unto him.

²⁰ Whoso curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

²⁰ For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.

¹ The wicked flee when no man pursues: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

⁶ In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous does sing and rejoice.

¹⁸ I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.

⁸ Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth! ⁹ In mine ears said the LORD of hosts, Truthfully many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.

²⁴ Therefore as the fire devours the stubble, and the flame consumes the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁴ And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a animal trap and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ¹⁵ And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.

²¹ And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.

This is the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us.

⁹ And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch. ¹⁰ It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever.

¹¹ Behold, all you that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that all of you have kindled. This shall all of you have of mine hand; all of you shall lie down in sorrow.

¹⁰ For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, says the LORD that has mercy on you.

³ And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, says the LORD.

²⁹ Their tents and their flocks shall they take away: they shall take to themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels; and they shall cry unto them, Fear is on every side.

²⁷ Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day has come, the time of their visitation.

⁹ Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverseness: for they say, The LORD has forsaken the earth, and the LORD sees not.

¹³ My net also will I spread upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare: and I will bring him to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; yet shall he not see it, though he shall die there.

²⁵ And you, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day has come, when iniquity shall have an end,

³ Thus says the Lord GOD; I will therefore spread out my net over you with a company of many people; and they shall bring you up in my net.

³³ The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.

¹¹ In the day that you stood on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even you were as one of them. ¹² But you should not have looked on the day of your brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither should you have spoken proudly in the day of distress. ¹³ You should not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, you should not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity; ¹⁴ Neither should you have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither should you have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress. ¹⁵ For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as you have done, it shall be done unto you: your reward shall return upon your own head.

⁶ I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet have you brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.

⁹ And God said to Jonah, Do you well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

⁶ Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increases that which is not his! how long? and to him that loads himself with thick clay! ⁷ Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite you, and awake that shall vex you, and you shall be for booties unto them? ⁸ Because you have spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil you; because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein. ⁹ Woe to him that covers an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil! ¹⁰ You have consulted shame to your house by cutting off many people, and have sinned against your soul. ¹¹ For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.

⁴ I will bring it forth, says the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that swears falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

¹² And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will strike all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

¹ For, behold, the day comes, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that comes shall burn them up, says the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

²⁶ And every one that hears these sayings (o. logos) of mine, and does them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: ²⁷ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

³⁵ Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words (o. logos) shall not pass away.

¹⁸ And where ever he takes him, he tears him: and he foams, and gnashes with his teeth, and pins away: and I spoke to your disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.

³⁹ And, lo, a spirit (o. pneuma) takes him, and he suddenly cries out; and it tears him that he foams again, and bruising him hardly departs from him.

⁴² Saying, If you had known, even you, at least in this your day, the things which belong unto your peace! but now they are hid from your eyes.

⁴⁴ And shall lay you even with the ground, and your children within you; and they shall not leave in you one stone upon another; because you knew not the time of your visitation.

²⁸ And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

⁹ And David says, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling block, and a recompence unto them:

¹⁰ Be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He takes the wise in their own craftiness.

⁵⁵ O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory? ⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.

¹¹ Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

⁵ Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:

³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction comes upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

⁸ In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

⁷ Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

⁹ But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

²⁶ And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

¹⁶ They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

¹⁵ And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

¹⁹ Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

³ And through covetousness shall they with feigned words (o. logos) make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingers not, and their damnation slumbers not.

¹³ Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

⁸ And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

¹⁵ And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; ¹⁶ And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

²³ And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in you; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in you: for your merchants were the great men of the earth; for by your sorceries were all nations deceived.

²⁰ And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

⁸ But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
