²⁶ For all of you see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

¹² I will also leave in the midst of you an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the LORD.

²⁵ At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hid these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them unto babes. ²⁶ Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in your sight.

³ It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto you in order, most excellent Theophilus,

²¹ In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, (o. pneuma) and said, I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hid these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in your sight.

²⁴ And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! ²⁵ For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

⁴⁶ So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum. ⁴⁷ When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death. ⁴⁸ Then said Jesus unto him, Except all of you see signs and wonders, all of you will not believe. ⁴⁹ The nobleman says unto him, Sir, come down before my child die. ⁵⁰ Jesus says unto him, Go your way; your son lives. And the man believed the word (o. logos) that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. ⁵¹ And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Your son lives. ⁵² Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. ⁵³ So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Your son lives: and himself believed, and his whole house.

⁴⁷ Then answered them the Pharisees, Are all of you also deceived? ⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? ⁴⁹ But this people who knows not the law are cursed.

³⁸ And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. ³⁹ And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

⁷ Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word (o. logos) of God.

¹² Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

³⁴ Nevertheless certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

²⁰ Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

³ And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. ⁴ And my speech (o. logos) and my preaching was not with enticing words (o. logos) of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit (o. pneuma) and of power: ⁵ That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. ⁶ Nevertheless we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nothing:

⁸ Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

¹³ Which things also we speak, not in the words (o. logos) which man's wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit (o. pneuma) teaches; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

¹⁸ Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seems to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. ¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He takes the wise in their own craftiness. ²⁰ And again, The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

²² All the saints salute you, chiefly they that are of Caesar's household.

⁹ Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: ¹⁰ But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. ¹¹ For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withers the grass, and the flower thereof falls, and the grace of the fashion of it perishes: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

⁵ Hearken, my beloved brethren, Has not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to them that love him?

¹³ Who is a wise man and imbued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. ¹⁴ But if all of you have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom descends not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. ¹⁶ For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. ¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be implored, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
