³ A sound of shepherds singing the song of Woe, because their greatness is involved in distress; a sound of lions roaring, because the swelling of the Jordan hath distressed them.

²¹ hast brought forth a son; but she made them no answer: her heart regarded it not; ²² but she called her son Ouaibarchaboth, for the ark of God, and for her father in law, and for her husband. And they said, The glory departed from Israel, when the ark of the Lord was taken.

²¹ Save me from the mouth of a lion, and this lowliness of mine from the unicorn's horns.

¹⁵ For you shall leave your name for a loathing to my chosen. As for you, the Lord will destroy you; but to my servants, a new name shall be given

¹⁵ Against him lions roared and uttered their voice: they have made his land a desert and his cities are demolished so as to be uninhabitable.

³⁰ In vain have I smitten your children, you did not receive instruction: a sword devoured your prophets, like a ravening lion; and you were not terrified.

⁴ Trust not in yourselves; in lying words: for you will derive no benefit from them who say, "The temple of the Lord! it is the temple of the Lord!"

¹¹ is not this house of mine, which is called by my name, become in your eyes a den of robbers? Now behold I have seen this, saith the Lord. ¹² Go then to my place which was at Selo, where I caused my name to dwell at first; and see what I have done to it, for the wickedness of my people Israel. ¹³ Now therefore because you have done all these things: and I have spoken to you and you have not hearkened to me; and I have called you and you have not answered; ¹⁴ I therefore will do to this house which is called by my name, and in which you have placed your confidence; and to this place which I gave to you and your fathers; as I did to Selo.

³⁴ Raise the mournful cry, ye shepherds; utter loud moans and lamentations, ye rams of the flock; for the days for your slaughter are accomplished, and ye shall fall like choice rams; ³⁵ and the shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the rams of the flock to escape. ³⁶ Hark! a sound of the shepherds' screaming! and a doleful bleating of the sheep and the rams! For the Lord hath utterly destroyed their pastures

⁶ I will make this house like Selo; and this city I will make a curse for all the nations of the whole earth.

¹⁹ Behold they shall be like the lion which must go up from the swelling of Jordan to Aitham. For I will speedily drive them from that place. Therefore set ye chosen warriors against it.

⁴⁴ Behold he will be like the lion which must go up from the swelling of Jordan to Gaitham, for I will speedily drive men from her, and set every youth against her: for who is like me and who can withstand me? And who is the shepherd who can stand before me?

³ And one of her young lions sallied forth; he became a lion and learned to prowl. He devoured men ⁴ and the nations heard of him; in their trap he was taken and carried in a cage to the land of Egypt. ⁵ When she saw that her main support was removed from her, was lost; she took another of her young lions and made him lion. ⁶ And he roamed about among lions. He became a lion and learned to seize prey. He devoured men

²¹ Say to the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord, Behold I will profane my sanctuary, the boast of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and for which your souls are moved with compassion; and your sons and your daughters whom you left shall fall by the sword: ²² and you shall do as I have done. You shall not receive comfort from their mouth nor eat funeral bread; ²³ your locks of hair shall be on your head, and your sandals on your feet; you shall neither utter lamentations nor shed tears; but shall pine away for your iniquities and exhort one another. ²⁴ And Ezekiel shall be for a sign to you, [according to all that he hath done you shall do when these things happen] and you shall know that I am the Lord. ²⁵ And with regard to thee son of man, will not this be the case? On the day when I take from them their strength; that which was their exultation and boast and the desire of their eyes and the pride of their soul; their sons and their daughters;

⁹ and he said, "Call his name "Not my people", since you are not my people and I am not your God." ¹⁰ [Now the number of the children of Israel was like the sand of the sea which cannot be measured nor counted.] "But it shall come to pass that in the place where it was said to them, " You are not my people, " they shall be called children of the Living God,

⁵ Let the inhabitants of Samaria sojourn with the calf of the house of On, because its people mourned for it. Now as they provoked it they should rejoice at its glory; that it hath been removed from them.

¹³ gird yourselves, ye priests, and lament bitterly: sing the song of Woe, ye who minister at the altar; go in and sleep in sackcloth, ye ministers of God. Because sacrifice and libation are withheld from the house of your God.

⁸ Now for these things shall not the land be troubled and every inhabitant therein mourn? Destruction indeed shall swell like a river, and flow down like the river of Egypt.

¹⁰ And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord, that there shall be a sound of shouting from the gate of the warriors, and a doleful lamentation from the second gate, and a great crashing from the hills.

³ her chiefs within her were like roaring lions, and her judges like the Wolves of Arabia. They left nothing for the morning:

¹¹ In that day thou shalt not be put to shame for all thy devices, which thou hast impiously devised against me; because I will then take away from thee those trifles which occasion thy haughtiness, that thou mayst no more continue to boast of my holy mountain;

⁸ and remove three shepherds in one month; and my soul will be weighed down against them. For as their souls roared against me,

¹⁵ Then the Lord said to me, Take thee yet the pastoral utensils of an unskilful shepherd; ¹⁶ for behold I am about to raise up a shepherd against this land, who will not visit what is fainting, nor seek what is scattered; nor heal what is bruised; nor lead aright what is sound; but will devour the flesh of the choice, and tear their joints asunder. ¹⁷ ye feeders of vanities who have forsaken the sheep. There is a sword against his arms, and against his right eye. Shall his arm be quite withered, and his right eye utterly put out?

⁷ And seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them," Brood of vipers! who hath prompted you to flee from the impending wrath. ⁸ Produce therefore fruits worthy of this reformation, ⁹ and presume not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father! For I say to you, God is able out of these stones to raise up children for Abraham. ¹⁰ Now the axe is at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore which doth not produce good fruit is to be cut down and cast into the fire.

¹⁴ Let them alone. They are blind leaders of blind. Now if the blind lead the blind, they will both fall into a ditch.

⁴³ Therefore I say to you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you and given to a nation producing the fruits thereof. ⁴⁴ And he who falleth on that stone will be bruised, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. ⁴⁵ Now the chief priests and the Pharisees, when they heard his parables, knew that he spake of them:

¹³ Now alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut up the kingdom of the heavens against men. For you neither enter in yourselves, nor suffer them who are going in, to enter. ¹⁴ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you devour the houses of the widows; and for a pretext make long prayers. For this you shall be punished with greater severity. ¹⁵ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you traverse sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is gained, you make him doubly more a child of hell, than yourselves. ¹⁶ Alas for you, blind guides, who say, to swear by the temple is not binding; but to swear by the gold of the temple is binding. ¹⁷ Foolish and blind! which is greater? The gold? Or the temple which halloweth the gold? ¹⁸ And, to swear by the altar doth not bind; but to swear by the gift thereon is binding. ¹⁹ Foolish and blind! which is greater? The gift? Or the altar which halloweth the gift? ²⁰ He therefore who sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it and by all on it. ²¹ And he who sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it and by him who dwelleth therein. ²² And he who sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him who sitteth upon it. ²³ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you pay tithe of mint, and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law; justice, mercy and fidelity. These you ought to have practised without omitting those. ²⁴ Blind guides, you are skimming off the gnat, and swallowing the camel. ²⁵ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you cleanse the outside of the cup and the plate; but on the inside they are full of rapine, and intemperance. ²⁶ Blind Pharisee, cleanse first what is within the cup, and the plate; so the outside will be clean. ²⁷ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you are like whitened sepulchres. These indeed appear beautiful on the outside; but within they are full of dead men's bones, and of all Corruption. ²⁸ In like manner you also appear outwardly to men to be righteous; but you are inwardly full of hypocrisy and iniquity. ²⁹ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you build the sepulchres of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, ³⁰ and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers we would not have been their accomplices in the blood of the prophets. ³¹ So you testify against yourselves that you are the sons of them who killed the prophets. ³² As for you then, fill up the measure of your fathers. ³³ Serpents! brood of vipers! how can you escape the punishment of hell? ³⁴ For this, behold I am about to send you prophets, wise men and Scribes: and some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city; ³⁵ that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth; from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zacharias, son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Verily I say to you, All these things will come upon this generation. ³⁷ O Jerusalem! Jerusalem! thou that killest the prophets and stonest them who are sent to thee! how often have I desired to gather thy children even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings; but you would not! ³⁸ behold this house of yours is left desolate

¹¹ they suborned men to say, We heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God. ¹² And having stirred up the people and the elders and the Scribes, they came upon him and seized him, and brought him to the Sanhedrim, ¹³ and set up false witnesses, who said, This man is incessantly speaking blasphemous words against this holy place and the law; ¹⁴ for we heard him saying that Jesus the Nazarene will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us.

⁵² Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? Indeed they have slain them who prophesied concerning the coming of that Righteous one, of whom you have now become the betrayers and murderers:

²¹ And he said to me, Depart, for I will send thee to far distant nations. ²² Now till that Word they had continued listening to him; then they raised their voice saying, Away with such a one from the earth, for it is not fit that he should live.

⁷ What is the inference? That which Israel sought he did not obtain; but the chosen obtained it and the rest were blinded. ⁸ As it is written, "God hath given them a spirit of stupefaction, eyes not to see and ears not to hear even to this day." ⁹ And David saith, "Let their table be for a snare and for a trap, and for a stumbling block, and for a retribution to them. ¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened that they may not see, And bow down their neck continually." ¹¹ I say then, Did they stumble that they might fall? No, by no means. But on this lapse of theirs the Gentiles have this salvation to provoke them to emulation. ¹² Now if this lapse of theirs is the riches of the world and the diminution of them is the riches of the Gentiles, how much more will their fulness be!

¹ Come, now, ye rich; weep, and raise a mournful cry for the miseries which are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are covered with rust; and the rust of them will be a witness against you, and corrode your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. ⁴ Behold the wages of the labourers who have reaped your fields, which you have withholden, raise a cry; and the outcries of these reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ You have lived luxuriously on the earth. You have indulged voluptuousness. You have pampered your hearts, as on a day of public feasting. ⁶ You have condemned you have murdered the just one. Is he not setting himself in array against you?
