²¹ Thou therefore who teachest another, dost thou not teach thyself? Thou who proclaimest not to steal, dost thou steal?

¹⁶ But to the sinner God said, "Why dost thou mention my judgments, or take my covenant in thy mouth? ¹⁷ As for thee, thou hast hated instruction, and cast my words behind thy back. ¹⁸ When thou sawest a thief, thou didst run with him; and hast been a partaker with adulterers. ¹⁹ Thy mouth hath abounded in wickedness, and thy tongue hath framed deceits. ²⁰ Sitting down thou hast spoken against thy brother, and against thy mother's son, propagated falsehood. ²¹ These things thou hast done and I was silent. Thou unjustly didst suppose that I would be like thyself. I will reprove thee and set things in order before thee.

¹¹ yet these dogs are of untamed appetite; they can never have enough. They are indeed mischievous, they have no consideration. They all followed their own courses, every one according to his own purpose.

¹² In thee they received bribes to shed blood. In thee they took interest and usury, and thou hast completed thy wickedness by oppression. And me thou hast forgotten, saith the Lord. ¹³ Now when I lay my hand on thee to destroy thee, for what thou hast done and for the blood which hath been shed in thee;

²⁷ Its chiefs in the midst of it were like wolves, ravening prey, to the shedding of innocent blood, that they may glut their greediness.

⁴ [p] Hear this, I beseech you, ye who every morning oppress the needy, and by your tyranny drive the poor from the land, saying, ⁵ "When will the new moon be over that we may buy? And the sabbaths, that we may open store? to make the measure small, and the weight heavy, and to make the balance uneven, ⁶ that we may purchase the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals, when from every kind of product we shall have made gain.

¹¹ [J] Her rulers have judged for rewards; and her priests have given answers for hire; and her prophets have prophesied for silver, without waiting for the Lord, saying, "Is not the Lord among us? No evils shall come upon us:"

¹³ and said to them, It is written, "My house shall be called a house of prayer," but you have made it a den of robbers.

³ Observe then and do whatever they enjoin you: but do not act as they do. For they say and do not practise. ⁴ For they bind up heavy and insupportable burdens and lay them on men's shoulders: but they themselves will not move them with their finger. ⁵ But all their works they do to be seen by men. For this they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge the tufts of their mantles, ⁶ and love the uppermost places at entertainments; and the first seats in the synagogues; ⁷ and salutations in places of public resort; and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi. ⁸ But as for you, be ye not called Rabbi; for one is your teacher, namely the Christ. Now as for you all, ye are brethren, ⁹ and should call no one on earth your father, for one is your father, namely, he who is in heaven. ¹⁰ Neither be ye called leaders for one is your leader, namely the Christ. ¹¹ Let then the greatest among you be your attendant. ¹² For who soever exalteth himself, shall be humbled, but he who humbleth himself, shall be exalted. ¹³ Now alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut up the kingdom of the heavens against men. For you neither enter in yourselves, nor suffer them who are going in, to enter. ¹⁴ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you devour the houses of the widows; and for a pretext make long prayers. For this you shall be punished with greater severity. ¹⁵ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you traverse sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is gained, you make him doubly more a child of hell, than yourselves. ¹⁶ Alas for you, blind guides, who say, to swear by the temple is not binding; but to swear by the gold of the temple is binding. ¹⁷ Foolish and blind! which is greater? The gold? Or the temple which halloweth the gold? ¹⁸ And, to swear by the altar doth not bind; but to swear by the gift thereon is binding. ¹⁹ Foolish and blind! which is greater? The gift? Or the altar which halloweth the gift? ²⁰ He therefore who sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it and by all on it. ²¹ And he who sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it and by him who dwelleth therein. ²² And he who sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him who sitteth upon it. ²³ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you pay tithe of mint, and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law; justice, mercy and fidelity. These you ought to have practised without omitting those. ²⁴ Blind guides, you are skimming off the gnat, and swallowing the camel. ²⁵ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you cleanse the outside of the cup and the plate; but on the inside they are full of rapine, and intemperance. ²⁶ Blind Pharisee, cleanse first what is within the cup, and the plate; so the outside will be clean. ²⁷ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you are like whitened sepulchres. These indeed appear beautiful on the outside; but within they are full of dead men's bones, and of all Corruption. ²⁸ In like manner you also appear outwardly to men to be righteous; but you are inwardly full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

²³ Upon which he said to them, you will doubtless apply to me this proverb; Physician heal thyself: what we have heard done in Capernaum, do here also in thine own country.

⁴⁶ Thereupon he said, Alas for you also, ye teachers of the law, because you load men with heavy burdens hard to be borne, and will not yourselves touch these burdens with one of your fingers.

⁴⁷ Now that servant who knew his master's will, and did not keep himself ready, nor act agreeably to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes;

²² Whereupon he Saith to him, Out of thine own mouth I will condemn thee, thou malignant slave. Thou knowest that I am an austere man, taking up what I laid not down, and reaping what I did not sow!

²⁷ but I buffet my body and subdue it, lest having proclaimed the glad tidings to others I myself should be disapproved.

¹³ For even they themselves, being circumcised, do not keep the law; but they wish you to be circumcised that they may boast in your flesh.

¹ But as for thee speak thou what is consistent with sound doctrine ² that aged men be sober, grave, discreet, sound in their belief, their love, their patience; ³ that aged women, in like manner, be in behaviour as becometh saints, not addicted to slander, not enslaved to wine, good instructors, that they may ⁴ teach the young women to be discreet, to love their husbands, to love their children, ⁵ to be modest, chaste, attentive to domestic affairs, good, submissive to their husbands; that the word of God may not be ill spoken of. ⁶ In like manner exhort young men to be sober minded, ⁷ shewing thyself in all things a pattern of good works; in thy doctrine displaying integrity, gravity, incorruptness,
