¹² swear now to me by the Lord your God, because I shew mercy to you, that you will shew mercy to my father's house;

³ and let me cause thee to swear by the Lord the God of heaven and the God of earth, that thou wilt not take a wife for my son Isaak, of the daughters of the Chananites among whom I dwell;

⁹ Then the servant put his hand under his master Abraham's thigh, and swore to him respecting this matter.

¹³ But the blood shall be to you for a sign on the houses in which you are. And when I see the blood, I will protect you and there shall be no destroying plague among you, when I smite in the land of Egypt.

We will let them live and protect them; that there may be no wrath against us because of the oath which we have sworn to them.

¹⁵ Then David said to him, Wilt thou conduct me to this horde? And he said, Swear to me now by God, that thou wilt not put me to death nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will conduct thee to the horde.

¹³ when he violated his engagements with Nabuchodonosar, to the performance of which he had caused him to swear by God; but hardened his neck, and strengthened his heart, not to return to the Lord God of Israel.

⁶ For how can I see the calamity of my people? or how can I survive the destruction of my kindred?

¹⁶ And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the way of my people to swear by my name, "As the Lord liveth" as they taught my people to swear by Baal;

⁴ and said to him, Go through the midst of Jerusalem and put a mark on the forehead of those men who are sighing and sorrowing for all the transgressions which are committed among them; ⁵ and to the others he said in my hearing, Go ye after him into the city and smite and spare not with your eyes nor shew compassion. ⁶ Destroy utterly old men and young, virgins and infants and married women; but go not near any of those who have the mark on them. Begin at my sanctuary. So they began with the men the elders who were in the house.

⁴⁴ Now he, who delivered him up, had given them a signal, saying, The person whom I will kiss, is he: seize him and carry him away securely.

³¹ without understanding, covenant breakers, void of natural affection, implacable, unmerciful.

⁸ Now if any one doth not provide for his own, and especially for those of his family, he hath renounced his belief, and is worse than an infidel.

¹⁶ The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of this chain of mine; ¹⁷ but when he was at Rome, sought me out diligently and found me. ¹⁸ The Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord in that day! Indeed, on how many occasions he ministered to me at Ephesus, thou thyself knowest very well.

¹³ for the sentence of judgment shall be without mercy for him who hath not exercised mercy, though mercy glorieth over a sentence of judgment.
