¹² Now I will declare my righteousness and thine evil deeds which shall not avail thee. ¹³ lo When thou criest; let them deliver thee in thine affliction. A wind indeed shall overtake them all; and a whirlwind shall sweep them away. But they who adhere to me shall possess the land, and inherit my holy mountain.

⁵ They hatched the eggs of asps, and are weaving a spider's web; and he who was about to eat some of their eggs, upon breaking one that was hatched found therein a viper. ⁶ Their web will not serve for a mantle, nor can they clothe themselves with their works; for their works are works of iniquity

⁶ and became all of us as unclean, and all our righteousness was like a polluted rag; and for our iniquities we have fallen like leaves; so that the wind will sweep us away.

³ As for the wicked man, who sacrificeth to me a young bull: he is one who slayeth a dog: and though he offereth me fine flour: it will be as the blood of swine. Though he offereth incense for a memorial, he is as a blasphemer. As they have chosen their own ways: and their soul hath delighted in their abominations: ⁴ I also will chuse their delusions, and pay them back their sins. Because I called them and they did not answer; I spake, but they did not listen:;but did that which is evil in my sight, and chose the things in which I did not delight; ⁵ hear the decisions of the Lord; ye who tremble at his word, say, "O our brethren; [to them who hate you and are abominable, that the name of the Lord may be glorified and appear to their joy, when they shall be ashamed] ⁶ a sound of screaming from the city! a sound from the temple! the voice of the Lord rendering a recompense to his adversaries!

⁸ But if you continue to trust in lying words from which you can derive no benefit; ⁹ and commit murder, and adultery and steal and swear to a falsehood, and burn incense to Baal; and when you have gone after strange gods which you did not know; ¹⁰ you, because of your calamities, have then come and stood before me, in the house which is called by my name, and said, "We have been restrained from committing these abominations;"

³⁰ What then are we to infer? That the Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, but it was a righteousness because of belief; ³¹ but Israel pursuing a law of righteousness did not come up to the law of righteousness. ³² Why?] Because they sought it not from belief; but as if attainable by works of law. For they stumbled at the stumbling stone.

¹⁸ For this doctrine [the doctrine of the cross] is foolishness to them who perish; but to us who are saved it is the power of God. ¹⁹ For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and abolish the understanding of the prudent." ²⁰ Where is the wise? Where the scribe? Where the disputer of this age? Hath not God shewn the wisdom of this world to be folly? ²¹ For when, amidst the wisdom of God, the world did not, by means of that wisdom, know God; it pleased God by the foolishness of this proclamation to save them who believe; ²² so when the Jews demand a sign and the Greeks seek wisdom, ²³ as for us, we proclaim a crucified Christ; to the Jews indeed a stumbling block, and to the Greeks foolishness; ²⁴ but to them who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God; ²⁵ because this foolish thing of God is wiser than men, and this weak thing of God is stronger than men. ²⁶ For observe, brethren, this call of you, that there are not many wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many of illustrious birth; ²⁷ but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise; and the weak things of the world God hath made choice of to put to shame the strong ²⁸ and the ignoble of this world, and those of no account, God hath chosen; nay, the very nothings, to put a stop to the operation of the things which are, ²⁹ that no flesh might boast in his presence. ³⁰ And it is owing to him that you are in Christ Jesus, who hath been made to us wisdom from God, namely, righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption, ³¹ so that as it is written, Let him who boasteth boast in the Lord."
