⁹ And when the Lord God said to Cain, "Where is Abel thy brother?" he said I know not. Am I my brother's keeper?

⁹ And the Lord God called Adam and said to him, "Adam, where art thou?" ¹⁰ And he said to him, "I heard the sound of thee walking in the garden and I was afraid, because I am naked, and I hid myself." ¹¹ And God said to him, "Who told thee that thou art naked, if so be thou hast not eaten of the tree of which alone I commanded thee not to eat of this?"

³² and sent away the variegated robe and had it carried to his father and said, This we found. Examine whether it be thy son's robe or not.

¹³ Yes, thou hast said, How can the Almighty know? Can he judge in darkness? ¹⁴ A cloud is his covering, so that be cannot be seen, though he traverse the circuit of heaven.

¹² for in making inquisition for blood, he had them in remembrance; he forgot not the prayer of the distressed.

¹³ Why hath the wicked provoked God?; For he said in his heart, He will not make inquisition. ¹⁴ Thou seest [for thou observest mischief and wrath]; That they have delivered themselves into thy hands. To thee the poor hath committed himself; Thou art the helper of the fatherless.

¹³ He who covereth his wickedness shall not prosper; but he who confesseth and forsaketh will be beloved.

⁴⁴ You are of your father the devil, and bent upon executing the desires of your father. He was a manslayer from the beginning, and did .not abide in the truth. Because there is no truth in him, when he speaketh falsehood he speaketh what is. natural to him, for he is a liar, and the father of it.

⁴ While it remained, did it not remain thine? And when sold it was still at thine own disposal. Why then hast thou determined this thing in thy heart? Thou hast not lied to men, but to God. ⁵ Upon hearing these words Ananias fell down and expired. And great fear came upon all who heard these things. ⁶ Then the young men arose and having swathed him, they carried him out and buried him. ⁷ And about the space of three hours after, his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in. ⁸ And Peter said to her, Tell me; did you sell the land for such a price? Behold the feet of them, who have buried thy husband are at the door, and they will carry thee out.
