⁹ Thereupon Peter said to her, How is it that you have agreed to try the spirit of the Lord? Behold the feet of them, who have buried thy husband are at the door, and they will carry thee out.

⁹ And the Lord God called Adam and said to him, "Adam, where art thou?" ¹⁰ And he said to him, "I heard the sound of thee walking in the garden and I was afraid, because I am naked, and I hid myself." ¹¹ And God said to him, "Who told thee that thou art naked, if so be thou hast not eaten of the tree of which alone I commanded thee not to eat of this?" ¹² And Adam said, "The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree and I did eat." ¹³ And the Lord God said to the woman, "Why hast thou done this?" And the woman said, "The serpent seduced me and I ate."

² and the people were reviling Moses and saying, Give us water that we may drink, Moses said to them, Why do you revile me? And why do you tempt the Lord?

⁷ and he called the name of that place, Temptation and Upbraiding, because of the upbraiding of the Israelites, and because they tempted the Lord and said, Is the Lord among us or not?

²² because all these men, who have seen my glory, and the wonders which I have done in Egypt, and in this wilderness, have actually tempted me now the tenth time, and have not hearkened to my voice,

⁶ And if thy brother, the son of thy father, or of thy mother, or thine own son, or daughter, or the wife in thy bosom, or a friend who is as thine own soul, speak privately to thee saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known; ⁷ any of the gods of the nations around you, of those near thee, or those far distant from thee, from one end of the earth to the other; ⁸ thou shalt not consent, nor hearken to him; neither shall thine eye pity him, nor shalt thou spare him, nor conceal him.

³² Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. And when the king despatched a man before him; before the messenger came to him he said to the elders, Do you see that this son of a murderer hath sent to take off my head? Look! when the messenger cometh, shut the door and stop him there. Is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?

¹⁸ When thou sawest a thief, thou didst run with him; and hast been a partaker with adulterers.

¹⁸ Still they made trial of God in their hearts, by asking for meats to their appetites. ¹⁹ Nay, they spoke against God and said, "Can God provide a table in a desert? ²⁰ When he smote a rock, waters gushed out, and streams swelled to an overflowing flood. But can He also give bread, or provide a table for his people?"

⁴⁰ How often did they provoke him in the wilderness, and excite him to anger in the desert? ⁴¹ They actually turned back and tempted God, and provoked to wrath the holy One of Israel.

⁵⁶ Still they tempted and provoked God the Most High, and did not keep his testimonies;

⁸ To-day, since you have heard his voice, let not your hearts be refractory as at the great provocation"as in the day of the temptation in the desert, ⁹ [J] where your father"s tried me; they proved me, though they had seen my works. ¹⁰ Forty years. I was incensed with that generation, and said, They do always err with the heart; and have not known my ways; so in mine indignation, ¹¹ I solemnly said, They shall not enter into my rest.

²¹ He who wickedly joineth hand to hand shall not go unpunished: but he who soweth righteousness shall receive a just reward.

⁵ Every lofted minded man is impure in the sight of God: and he who hath joined hand to hand unjustly shall not go unpunished.

³ they are preparing their hands for evil. The chief asketh and the judge hath spoken words of peace! He is entirely at his devotion;

⁷ Jesus said to him, It is also written, "Thou shall not try the Lord thy God."

² So having called him, he said to him, What is this that I hear of thee? Give an account of thy stewardship; for thou canst no longer be steward.

³ Upon which Peter said, Ananias, Why hath Satan filled thy heart that thou shouldst lie to the Holy Spirit, and keep back a part of the price of the land? ⁴ While it remained, did it not remain thine? And when sold it was still at thine own disposal. Why then hast thou determined this thing in thy heart? Thou hast not lied to men, but to God.

⁶ Then the young men arose and having swathed him, they carried him out and buried him.

¹⁰ Now therefore why do ye try God, to put upon the neck of the disciples, a yoke which neither our fathers nor we are able to bear?

²⁰ And he said, The Jews have agreed to request thee to bring down Paul to morrow to the Sanhedrim, under a pretence of making some more minute inquiry concerning him; ²¹ but be not prevailed on by them; for there are more than forty men of them in ambush, who have bound themselves by a solemn anathema not to eat nor drink, till they have killed him, and they are now ready, expecting this promise from thee. ²² Upon this the commander dismissed the young man with this charge, Tell no one that thou hast given me this information.

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world stand convicted before God.

¹⁵ and how shall they proclaim, unless they be sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of them who proclaim the joyful message of peace"who proclaim the glad tidings of good things."

⁹ nor let us try the Christ as some indeed of them did, and were destroyed by serpents:
